1977joey
Hi Guys, Well for those of you that remember 'Shawbury' my last layout, this is the start of its replacement, 'Shawbury Foregate'. The layout is based on the operations at Shrewsbury between 1987 to about 1992 ish (To allow me to get a class 158 if we ever get a retooled version). I dismantled the last layout as I wasn't happy with the station being a terminus as I like to watch the trains run, & also my fiddle yard was less than user friendly being located under a fixed upper level of track. this time i've gone for a much simpler, but still fun design. The track work is simply flat, 2 continueous ovals, goods loops in the station, & a 7 road fiddle yard at the rear. The board measures 6' x 2' 2", just enough to squeeze in a decent station. The station itsel will have just 4 Platforms, 2 are through platforms & the other 2 being bays. Passenger trains will be Birmingham to Shawbury Foregate terminating local's normally formed of DMU's, other's continuing on to Chester or Aberystwyth, the latter normally worked by Class 150 Sprinters. The CrossCountry North & west services from Manchester/Liverpool to Cardiff & south wales, formed of loco hauled stock supplimented by Class 156 SuperSprinter's. There's also a local service to Crewe and of course the heart of wales service to Swansea via Llandovery. I will also be including InterCity services to London Euston, with a bit of modellers licence, some of these will be a HST On the freight side there's the steel coyle Llanwern/Margam to Dee Marsh trains, & also the weekly petroleum train from Stanlow to Aberystwyth. I'm looking forward to my grey Class 56 when it becomes available & although dated, i'm thinking of getting the Farish Class 25 for the Aberystwyth Oil train. These are the first shots of the layout giving the general idea & how far I have got. A track plan will be following shortly too Cheers for now guys, Mark

SNCF stephen
I am really looking forward to seeing this develop. If it is as good as your last two layouts then this will be a very interesting topic. You certainly have an eye for the right details to include to give your layout the look of the era. Good luck with the build. Stephen

1977joey
A very nice layout you have there mate, I know it's only track laid on bare boards, but it looks good! Thanks Sammy, Glad you like what you see so far Hi Mark, Glad to see the new layout taking shape, looking really interesting. Graham. Thanks very much Graham Glad you like it. Well i've now drew up a track plan.....here it is.... I intend to build a polystyrene raft over the storage sidings at the back so the townscape buildings (rescued from the old layout) will now be on an upper level. I will post more pictures once i've constructed the platforms. Cheers for now guys, Mark

1977joey
Hi Mark, great to see you back at it! Plan looks good so far, looking forward to seeing it develop! Thanks Andrew I'm getting there......slowly lol! Well not much on the station construction front to report, though when I did construct the top end of the Platform, I realised that an extra 6" to the baseboard would make a world of difference to the overall look. What made me think this was my HST just didn't look right when on platform 1, with one of the power cars round the bend. Now i've added the extra 6", the HST with 6 X Mark 3 coaches & 2 power cars fits nice & flush in the platform with room either end . Doing this I have added another carriage siding so now I have 2 carriage sidings that can hold up to 7 x coaches, & 2 short sidings with a dead section to hold upto 2 loco's each or upto a 3 car DMU. Now all the track is in place, tacked down & tested, proper construction of the station can begin. Here are the alterations.... The new track plan showing the extra carriage siding... In this picture shows how far the platform came upto abutting the bay platforms before I extended the board. You can see how much longer it will be in this picture & how i've been able to extend the sidings too. & finally my newest loco that will be a regular on freight services through Shawbury Northgate, this beauty from Dapol Cheers for now guys, Mark
1977joey
Hi Guys, well, i suppose with the really crap weather & annual leave is giving me chance to get on with the layout rather than being out & about I have now completed constructing the platforms & they are now in place ready to be edged. I now need to order some clear styrene sheets to start work on the canopies & constructing the buildings at the top end of the platforms. Here's some pictures of how it all looks as of today, I've placed a polystyrene square with the station frontage building on it just to show where the raft over the storage sidings will be constructed to represent some townscape.... Overall view of the platforms, No 1 to the right, a through Platform, 2 & 3 in the centre which are the bays, & No 4 again a through platform This view showing where the platform buildings will stand & the main station building seen on the polystyrene square, an are which will be built up Cheers for now guys, Mark
Jack00
What a lovely layout...and full length trains too! I'll keep an eye on developments. Especially like the 47 and mk2 rake. Jack.
1977joey
What a lovely layout...and full length trains too! I'll keep an eye on developments. Especially like the 47 and mk2 rake. Jack. Thanks Jack, glad you like it . I'm hoping to get another rake of Mark 2's shortly in InterCity Excecutive livery, though i'm going to have to vinyl them as it looks like it's going to be years before we see Farish do any in that livery. 1977joey
Hi Guys, Well another rainy day....just for a change So i've been doing some building. I've created the 2 structures for the platforms which will become the staff accomodation, buffet, toilets & red star parcels office. Today i've ordered the clear plasticard to construct the platform canopies. I've also added the peco bufferstops to the sidings & bay platforms too today. One of my next jobs is to sort the rear of the main station frontage building as before it was constructed for a terminus and to also create a footbridge to link it with the platforms. Here are some pictures of how it all looks so far..... Cheers for now, Mark

1977joey
Hi Guys, Thankyou for all the kind comments Some more progress to report, I have now constructed the canopy for the top end of the platforms at Shawbury Foregate. This was the part I was most dreading because of the curvature of the Platform, i really had to think of the design. I wanted a traditional canopy for the top end with GWR style valancing & for the bottom half where the bays are, I'm going to construct 'umbrella' type canopies as can be seen at Shrewsbury. The track at the moment looks a mess on the layout as it still has bits of old ballast glued to it, tho I am going to brush all of this out before I start adding the new ballast once the station & all the other structures are in place. This is how it all looks so far.... Constucting the canopy from clear plasticard, & marking out the panes of glass with a permenant marker... The canopy in situ before adding the valance the valance now been added... This view shows how i've shaped the canopy to fit the curvature of the platforms Cheers for now guys Mark
shanks522
The canopy looks brilliant so far Mark, I really like the curved roof, adds a lot of character i think. Graham.
