post-7650-0-58542100-1392134978_thumb.jpg

a basic wooden bodies mineral wagon..

build up of crud around the strapping close go the side doors and on the underframe.

And one end of the mineral with rust patches..

post-7650-0-22876800-1392135075_thumb.jpg.

Makes a change to ..

post-7650-0-00541900-1392135112_thumb.jpg

the 8th (and final)  Murgatroyd and a red ICI version.

City of Manchester - as shown in my previous post. It carried the strange BR Maroon with BR Blue/Green loco lining .

A "clean" picture

post-7650-0-78043400-1392284231_thumb.jpg

and now (apologies for the light shining on the boiler - indoor lights are not good for photos) dirty

post-7650-0-52667600-1392284245_thumb.jpg

Around the firebox/footplate area there was an accumulation of dirt ..

post-7650-0-14125600-1392284351_thumb.jpg

and the running gear has had powder added while the ink is still wet...

post-7650-0-88693600-1392284372_thumb.jpg

The tender has the usual accumulation of dirt/soot/coal dust/exhaust gunk along its top edge as well as along the footplate/tender side join

post-7650-0-46554500-1392284390_thumb.jpg

and finally the water filler area..

I have added these in my blog but I will add them here as I have had one suggestion to the question I will set at the end... It was a good suggestion but are there others?

So a couple of Bachmann Moguls:

post-7650-0-00789100-1392404359_thumb.jpg

a LMS designed one...

and a BR Standard 4MT - which I bought to replace a motorised Airfix one..

post-7650-0-14831900-1392404432_thumb.jpg

and the question is - how to cover up those awful screws holding the valve gear together??

More stunning work! Just love the 4MT! :locomotive:  Just finished a 5MT myself recently. Think all the BR standards look good weathered up a bit. :jester: As for the screws I have no idea :scratchhead: , but I'm sure you will find an answer.

Thanks Callum.

Yes the standards do ;look better with a bit of dirt added.

I do have a solution - change the wheels... a bit drastic but I have just rewheeld a couple of locos to get them to run on C&L track....

Subtlety.... its what makes or breaks weathering... and the camera doesn't always show the subtle weathering shades etc used on models....

Having fitted sound to two diesels they needed a gentle weathering .so first up a Type 2 (aka Class 25)

post-7650-0-07380500-1392898988_thumb.jpg

as the sun is failing to shine this is an indoor shot - but you can see some of the lighter areas of weathering..

Roof detail..

post-7650-0-68894000-1392900148_thumb.jpg

and a EE Type 4 (aka Class 40)

post-7650-0-82577200-1392900167_thumb.jpg

A bit of roof..

post-7650-0-13920300-1392900230_thumb.jpg

and a closer look at the nose end of the 40..

post-7650-0-14163300-1392900261_thumb.jpg

enjoy

So time for some steam engines..

first up a shed cleaned Duchess of Rutland....

as this was painted by Coachman a long time ago getting a nice shine on the cellulose paintwork is easy - and no T-cut or microsol in sight!

post-7650-0-38832300-1393265803_thumb.jpg

of course the cleaners haven't a lot of time to get even a duchess clean..

so ..

cab dirt

post-7650-0-00740800-1393265866_thumb.jpg

this is now off to Carlisle....

and while I had the inks etc out I also did a couple of ex GC locos...

First up a loco from Mike Edge on of his kits- a D10

post-7650-0-05516200-1393265961_thumb.jpg

luckily he provided a good black and white photo of this loco so...

post-7650-0-88526900-1393265998_thumb.jpg

and he asked for the smokebox burn mark...

post-7650-0-49401100-1393266034_thumb.jpg

and compare it with my Bachmann D10

post-7650-0-11775100-1393266061_thumb.jpg

so I made sure the D11 s a bit dirtier...

post-7650-0-64703300-1393266092_thumb.jpg

and it looks better with some good etched beading on the splasher - wherever did Bachmann get the silver lines from??

Hope these are OK

Having been away from home for nearly 7 weeks I am starting to get back into weathering. Currently there are some more of these:

post-7650-0-79510500-1398240872_thumb.jpg

in the weathering area - this set are to be very slightly weathered 9so they are different from the first 12.

Hopefully some updated photos will appear next week.

Among other things going through the weathering shops at the moment I have been busy with some OO wagons .. These are for a fellow RMwebber....

He wanted "gentle" weathering so a thin (ie more water to ink) wash all over, spread into the grooves between planks and some around the stove chimney on the toad followed by a light application of dust

post-7650-0-84058500-1400266457_thumb.jpg

and the roof

post-7650-0-79100600-1400266589_thumb.jpg

and something for me.. not finished as I have inked this and applied coal/soot dust but no rust highlights etc. A Hornby Stanier 8F

post-7650-0-51992800-1400266975_thumb.jpg

and a close up of the wheels and motion.. dust added while the ink is still wet..

post-7650-0-13550000-1400267034_thumb.jpg

enjoy!

It is very seldom I am asked to make a loco really "dirty" but this Graham Varley built and painted V2 has been given a Gatesheed shed look..

 post-7650-0-04849400-1400617403_thumb.jpg

some close ups to show the build up of "clag" on the loco..

and clag along the bottom of the cab side-sheets/tender tank

Off to have a lie down..

Why do the RTR manufacturers believe that a squirt of brown paint all over the underframe and lower edges of a wagon constitutes realistic weathering? Well I have just re-weathered a couple of Dapol "weathered" wagons ... I din't bother to photograph them before I worked on them but here they are now:

post-7650-0-22984500-1404311783_thumb.jpg

and the top of one - ink followed by powder while the ink is damp to the touch..

post-7650-0-79935500-1404311862_thumb.jpg

and teh ends - which originally were 75% brown..on a black vehicle...

In between yet more Murgatroyd's tankers i have done some work on a model new to me .. Hornby Hawksworth coaches. These rae really nice vehicles so... a bit of roof and underframe/lower coach side weathering has been applied to bring out the detail.. First up .. a full first

post-7650-0-35021100-1405953379_thumb.jpg

and a full third..

post-7650-0-58850500-1405953422_thumb.jpg

and finally a brake third.

post-7650-0-17789500-1405953464_thumb.jpg

They are all in blood and custard livery.

Hornby L1 - a lovely model even if it doesn't sound like a cement mixer.

First the left hand side

post-7650-0-19210300-1406283955_thumb.jpg

then the right

post-7650-0-06565700-1406283966_thumb.jpg

Hornby have a lovely paint finish if only a bit matt - so I have used some interesting ingredients to get a sheen on this shed cleaned loco

Just a brief note as I have been looking out for some soft brushes for use with weathering powder.

Step forward superdrug who do a variety of soft makeup brushes at reasonable prices.
They also do soft sponge wedges (used for spreading the ink/water around on stock being weathered)
A happy customer!

Edited as my Kobo makes words up as it goes along(!)

One thing I've found useful is those glass pots you get with individual "Gű" cheesecakes in Co-op, as you can add thinners, inks water etc, whatever you want, and it doesn't eat through them. So as a bonus you get two nice glass mixing pots and two tasty cheesecakes!

But yes I am soon going to be going along to my local model shop (Morris's of Lancing) to pick up some weathering powders and inks and generally lark around with a surplus coach practicing the technique.

I will post pictures on my wagon thread when I have something to show.

Glad that you are going to have a go. I haven't seen the glass pots your are talking about - I still have some old baby food jars and "mini" jam/marmalade jars I use for storing powder etc. Glass jars/bottles are really handy!

If you need any help let me know.
