dave_long
There are a number of colour photos on Flickr. In my opinion there's too much contrast in your rust colour, it almost gives off a glow.
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted February 1, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 1, 2015 I used a couple of photos of another Scot - I didn't have one of The Old Contemptibles in colour with me at the show. They are from Gavin Morrisons book on Leeds Holbeck shed. I try to make use of colour plates of particular stock to help with weathering. Major problems are caused by the lack of decent shots of the top of locos and coaches as well as of the insides of mineral wagons. edited to include book details The last 'Scot' I saw (and travelled behind) makes yours look like an exhibition finish, the only bit which was almost clean was the cabside number! RMweb Gold sjrixon Posted February 19, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 19, 2015 I've been playing a little on an old Hornby closed wagon.. Do people use a smaller brush to get some grime along the edges? I think everything I've been using is a little big to get into the corners. I'd post a picture, but the weather is so horrid that it's impossible..
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted February 19, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 19, 2015 I use various sized brushes for the application of powder. For teh ink/water I use sponge to spread it everywhere.. currently I use makeup wedges and little makeup sponges on sticks. Hope that helps

RMweb Gold sjrixon Posted February 20, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 20, 2015 Ok, probably not the best picture to put up for review.. But it was all I could get in the low light this morning.. I tried to simulate the run off the roof with some fresh ink after the main weathering, but I'm not 100% sure it worked. I also tried to add some more around the doors, again not sure..
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted February 20, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 20, 2015 use a little ink/water delivered by brush along the edge of the roof/side join. Then, let it dry a little before using either a wide flat hard brush (nylon bristle make up or paint brush) to drag the mix down the van side, make sure you use a good colour photo as a guide. does that help? RMweb Gold sjrixon Posted February 20, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 20, 2015 Yes.. I think I let mine dry too much! Had a picture, but mine didn't look like the picture when I finish☺ Still, I think it looks better than when I started ☺
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted February 24, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 24, 2015 If you get a weathered finish that you like stick with it! Others may not like it but if its for you that's fine. My clients are specific about what they want and I weather their stock to how they want them. RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted March 26, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 26, 2015 Any suggestions as to the best way to replicate an oily finish on coupling rods. The sort of golden brown colour we often see in photos... Rob
RMweb Gold Metr0Land Posted March 26, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 26, 2015 My preferred way is Modelmates Oily Brown (either direct from them or model shops) http://www.modelmates.co.uk/product/oil-brown-2/ It takes a little while to dry so if you've put too much on you can wipe away. Alternatively build up several thin coats.
RMweb Gold Mick Bonwick Posted March 26, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 26, 2015 AK-Interactive Engine Oil (AK084) is a good match.
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted March 26, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 26, 2015 use a bit of gunmetal paint mixed with a browny colour paint as a base (match the colour to the photo colours ) then wash over it with ink and when its still slightly wet add some powders then, using a stiff brush drag the powder across the rods to get a little bit of texture to the rods. RMweb Premium Barry O Posted April 15, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) Duchesses - I love them! Four completed for a client. These are from a variety of Builders and painters .. all are DJH kits and all are EM. Two very heavily weathered, two lightly weathered Duchess of Abercorn - light King George VI - heavy City of Sheffield - heavy and finally Sir William Stanier FRS - light The two heavily weathered locos cover up some blemishes in the paint work. And just for something different a 2P..again a kit built and painted by someone else - I am just weathering it. RMweb Premium Barry O Posted June 15, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 15, 2015 Due to other commitments I have not managed to undertake a lot of weathering recently ..but I have started to work through the backlog today starting with 10001. This is a Bachmann model regauged to EM by Mike Edge. I have fitted a Legomanbiffo 37/0 sound chip and then weathered it. end three quarter view and t'other side Baz
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted July 28, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 28, 2015 (edited) Been busy with a bit of sound fitting and weathering over the last couple of days. First up a Caprotti 5 from a Comet Kit built and painted by Steve Haley Graham Varley. (correct builder identified) I fitted a Loksound V4 (sound from Digitrains) chip in the tender and 2 sugar cubes in the front frames (isn't EM gauge wonderful sometimes?) and then weathered it. Question - were any Caprottis ever kept clean? Tender close up and for something different a Heljan CoBo - re-gauged by Mike Edge to EM. I fitted a Loksound V4 (sound from Digitrains) chip in the body and two sugar cubes in the fuel tank. and the other side I replaced some of the Heljan pipework as it is too flimsy to survive very long. Back to steam A brace of Duchesses - these have Zimo 646 decoders fitted under the cab area and sugarcubes fitted between the frames under the chimney. They have both had the rods weathered (City of Carlisle hadn't when the photo was taken) and that was it. Except City of Carlisle has been polished a little - both built and painted by Graham Varley. City of Carlisle and City of Birmingham and to round it off another diesel a Heljan BRCW type 2 (Class 26) in Green - sound fitted with speaker in fuel tank This loco is gently weathered for a reasonably new, looked after diesel. Again its been regauged to EM by Mike Edge Baz Edited July 29, 2015 by Barry O
RMweb Premium Barry O Posted July 29, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 29, 2015 More weathering completed today. Another Black 5 not sure who built it - its in EM. and a B16/3 - from a PDK kit built and painted by Graham Varley a close up of the tender and something for me a pair of LNER Grain Wagons enjoy! RMweb Premium Barry O Posted August 12, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 12, 2015 Been re-gauging/fitting 3 link couplings and weathering a number of wagons this week. First up examples of a group of unfitted vans, Not sure about the "W" number on the van on the left as its a SOuthern Railways/BR design. Next up some fitted vans looks like both are Parkside kits. A Gunpowder van (Hornby Dublo body on a Parkside chassis) and chalk marked Parkside van and finally a Hornby Bogie Bolster A Baz
