Just been doing a bit of weathering on an Industrial. Its a Kitson "long boilered" 0-6-0T and has been scratchbuilt and painted by Mike Edge

It arrived in this state

Mike Edge is taking the Kitson to ExpoEM North if you want to see it.

I have to say, as its a commission it was great to do. Up next Black 5, Duke of Gloucester, A3s and a Brittannia. A nice mix!

Just for a change from the LM Pacific's I have just sound chipped (Digitrains sound on a Zimo 648) and weathered two DJH kit built A3s (I believe they were built, painted and lined by Graham Varley)

First up Sir Visto

and its brother

Spearmint.

These are fairly clean - with dirt of the valve gear and top of the boiler

post-7650-0-85487000-1442941224_thumb.jpg

and a Brush Type 4 - Heljan regauged to EM by Mike Edge and weathered and sound chipped (Legomanbiffo) by me

post-7650-0-68624800-1442941245_thumb.jpg

and just a glimpse of Apollo, a DJH kit built loco weathered and sound chipped (Digitrains sound on a Zimo 648) by me - speaker is in the boiler as is the chip

Been a bit quiet due to other commitments but having regauged 60 odd wagons I can now start to weather them.

But a salutary tale. It would appear that at a show earlier this year someone kindly added some sort of silvery dust to my black weathering powder. I have thrown it all away and restocked. A trader mentioned seeing someone looking at my powders while I was at lunch. So I need to keep lids on and off the table for future demos.

I have been busy preparing a lot of wagons for weathering. Generally this means adding 3 link or instanter couplings, fitting new (or regauging old) wheels set for EM track, adding the odd transfer, replacement buffer and, in the case of the Containers, fitting chains to simulate the method of shackling down the containers on Conflat As.

post-7650-0-75506200-1447100342_thumb.jpg

Lots of conflats

Coal hoppers including Hornby and Dapol wagons

post-7650-0-64908100-1447100371_thumb.jpg

Bachmann minerals

post-7650-0-28704900-1447100382_thumb.jpg

Hornby LM Brake Vans and a modified Airfix fitted brake

post-7650-0-97914400-1447100403_thumb.jpg

more Bachmann Minerals with sheet rails

I suppose it would take me an hour or so to weather these using my airbrush but I will stick to ink and powders - all of the Conflats and containers and Mineral hoppers have been inked up.

and some finished conflats

More wagons to come!

Baz, if you get bored with chains, I have several pictures where a pair of AFs are loaded to a Conflat A and then the inner corner eyes roped together and to the wagon. I wondered whether it was down to missing chains when I first saw one, but I have a shot of a whole rake all secured the same way, so it must have been deliberate.

JW

got two lowfits which will be done with rope (despite a message saying "not to be fitted with Containers" on the wagon). I may need to do some more as I have 6 still to do and have run out of chain...

What did you use for the corner chains pls?  The only realistic stuff I've seen lately seems rather expensive but it looks like you've found a source?

After trying various chains from a variety of sources I now use Slaters chain - (I need to go back and mock up some turnbuckles but may just get away without them as the layout they will be used on is somewhat large and you can't get too close to the night meat containers). The chain is:

1209 Fine Brass Chain 24 links per inch [36" per packet]

Hope that helps

A couple of DJH Black 5s - I believe these have new EM chassis from Steve Haley and a bit of paintwork from him too.

and a shot from above

Modified method of weathering valve gear employed - supplied to me with motion work painted a brown colour - ink added, powder added then "pulled" with a stiff brush.

I have already "heavily" weathered  six On3 wagons - and have just finished "lightly" weathering another six. These are RTR wagons with reaguaged wheelsets and make Bachmann On30 wagons look small! (which, in reality, they are!)

post-7650-0-96800400-1452029666_thumb.jpg

These have had a wash of very thinned down black ink, allowed to dry and then a cream (almost "marvel" milk substitute colour) weathering powder applied - et voila!

So a bit of weathering done today on locomotives for Herculaneum Dock - it is appearing at Southampton Show at the end of this month in much changed format. More tank locos needed so:

First up a Hornby (weathering from Hornby provided by chicking brown paint on it) Stanier - now weathered in darker black for its owner Mike Edge.

post-7650-0-09737100-1452358441_thumb.jp

and the other side

post-7650-0-81335300-1452358458_thumb.jp

and my two 2-6-4Ts

42069

post-7650-0-30496000-1452358280_thumb.jp

and 42083

post-7650-0-35490900-1452358294_thumb.jp

and finally a curiosity - scratch built by my old man, chassis fettled by Mike Edge

post-7650-0-82001300-1452358270_thumb.jp

apologies for the photos but it was a bit dark today in the work room

So I have fitted sound and weathered two locos (with another 4 to weather tomorrow)

First up a rebuilt Crosti 9F

post-7650-0-81406900-1452791637_thumb.jpg

and three quarters front view

post-7650-0-86707800-1452791732_thumb.jpg

and A2 Class Sun Chariot

post-7650-0-30370200-1452791813_thumb.jpg

and again three quarters front view

post-7650-0-97100100-1452791848_thumb.jpg

Both built and painted by Graham Varley form DJH kits - the Crosti rebuild started as a Crosti 9F kit - might do one of these for me!

Been busy with lots of different things and now back to a bit of weathering.

I have had 27 Bachmann 16T unfitted mineral wagons to add 3 link couplings to, weather and add EM Gauge wheels. Still waiting for the wheels but the rest of the work is now complete.

So a couple of photos of two minerals

And it was only when I tried to get a shot of the interiors did I notice how bent they are

anyone else had the same with Bachmann Unfitted 16T Minerals?

Pity if they were bent outwards they would be prototypical, nice weathering though.

These were all new in the box. My own Airfix ones have bent the "right" way!

I have tried to get them a bit squarer but even when warm they just go back to having an inward bend.

In the workshop today is an EM Gauge scratchbuilt (by Mike Edge) model of the last LMS built Black 5 44767 - fitted with Stephenson link motion. An absolute peach of a locomotive!

It has been weathered to represent an engine cleaned at a shed.

The weathering along the boiler is added by spreading the ink/water mix along the top of the boiler, letting it almost dry then adding powder.

I used a photo to show me where the cleaners could reach and they never seem to clean the smokebox.
