I have another loco for sale for charity........

It's a Hornby loco-drive 2P.

I've renumbered it, detailed it and weathered it.

£65.00 if anyone is interested.

I've also added real coal, a crew and a lamp - apparently, some will pay to have this done to their locos!

There was another............

This renumbered/detailed/weathered Bachmann Austerity, but I think this has sold already...............

I can't remember if the Sutherland chassis blocks are on the narrow side or not, but if they are you could fit thin plasticard sides to it with the details added to that. You might find that you can also file the block to make it look a bit more like the real frames....

I've got a few of the blocks for their Wee Ben kits that take the old ECM motors. I could do with a few more (block and motors) if anyone has them knocking around please...

I've been taking a few more 'comparative' shots.......

I think a Bachmann Austerity stands up well against a DJH equivalent, especially if one considers the price differential.

I asked £100.00 for the Bachmann Austerity in my last post, and that wouldn't even buy the basic DJH kit; not to mention wheels/motor/gearbox/etc.

As for an O1......

Compared with an altered Hornby one.

Of course, any 'comparisons' are irrelevant where there is no RTR equivalent.

As in the case of..........

Or a Little Engines O4/8.

Didn't someone do a resin O4/8 body to go on top of a Bachmann O4 chassis? Does anyone remember, please, because I'd like to do one for Retford..............

I've deliberately taken these shots in very tight perspective, because it much-more highlights any discrepancies or 'issues' with these models (though, by the way, 'bendy' footplates were not uncommon on ex-GC 2-8-0s).

Side-on shots are of use, but they don't show bloopers in anywhere near the same detail. But, you need a camera with a lens which will stop down to smaller than F40!

I had one DJH Austerity and one Bachman one. After a weekend running on Chapel en le Frith I bought another DJH one (ex Carlisle) which now has a new motor and gearbox (a chinese motor (£1.25) soldered to a High Level Gearbox) This doesn't go quickly (which is correct for a WD) but can pull a house down!

I think Bill Bedford offers an O4/5 and O4/7.  There were hopes of an O4/8 but that seems to have disappeared.

Well, the things I offered for sale today have fairly flown. My thanks to all who've bought them, meaning I can send another donation to CRUK.

I'll be taking what's left (among with some other charity items) to the Cotgrave (Bingham Club) show tomorrow and Sunday should anyone be interested. I'll have my usual demo/loco-doctoring stand.

I hope to see you there.

Two splendid O4/8s; thanks Graeme and Mick.

My first attempt at making one was 50 years ago................

I made it using a K's O4 chassis (though not K's mechanics), footplate and tender, scratch-building the boiler, saddle and cab from brass/nickel silver sheet.

The chimney and dome are from Jamieson, and aren't right. Still, it carries on running.................

Yes, I had hopes for an 04/8 from Moussa and even paid a small deposit to show interest but nothing has ever come of it. I think Bill abandoned resin casting and has moved on to 3D printing.

I found this link for an 04/8 :

https://www.shapeways.com/product/KYYMUFD6T/b-76-gcr-o4-8-loco

The design is by Recreation21

I have no idea about quality or whether the price of nearly $60 ($48.05 plus shipping) is reasonable.

A pity Little Engines kits nolonger available. Does anyoneknow what happened to them as they did a number of 04s which occasionally turn up second hand. Dave Alexander kits was another sad loss to the hobby.

Thanks for the shapeways link. A project for next Autumn perhaps.

The discussion about how to do an O4/8 is interesting. It would be good if Bachmann were to do one but I think it unlikely. Might there be a market for some kind of conversion kit to use with a Bachmann/Replica B1 body? Retford could do with another O4/8 or two.

These and other comparison shots show how good some RTR models are. Whilst assisting Sandra with Retford, I have occasionally been surprised to find a loco I thought was probably kit-built was in fact RTR, including an A2, A1, Britannia and O4, amongst others.

Keith,

my limited experience with Shapeways has been of poor quality, expensive items. This has been with a couple of LNWR vans which aren't worth the effort of attempting to turn into a finished model. Products on the Shapeways site ate normally a digital preview, not the item you will actually receive.

Bill Bedford - Mousa Models - appears to have moved from resin cast kits with etched running gear to almost totally 3D printed kits. Presumably a more suitable solution for low volume  kits, although I prefer the resin cast/etched ones. His approach to assessing customer demand by requesting a minimal deposit to assess demand for proposed products does seem to identify demand is insufficient on a regular basis.

A propos of nothing much apart from maybe the power of Wright as model railway influencer. I've just noticed that a K's J3 on eBay has sold for £117.96 -- looks quite nicely built but *no motor* and with original useless plain-brass-bar chassis and equally useless wheels. So much for getting the (unbuilt) kit for £25 and making a usable layout loco on the cheap ... as Tony describes so well in the latest BRM.

Don't touch it. It's the wrong material altogether and would be dreadful.

It is one of many 'designs' that have never been test printed prior to offering for sale. They are printed in a nylon material which does not take  glue and is incredibly rough, it is chosen for cheapness with no alternative given by the designer (the cost would be ridiculous)

Wouldn't happen on Ebay, but if you find one at a show it's quite possible.   I have an unbuilt one I was given as part of a clear out.   There is an element of chance to it, but there are bargains out there.

Wouldn't happen on Ebay,

Not unless you are incredibly thorough with searches, vigilant at all times, and exceedingly lucky. I've been waiting a  couple of years to see if "saved searches" turn up a bargain RTR loco of one of two types. The only ones that came anywhere near to my idea of cheap slipped under the radar at the time of sale and were only discovered by me later in lists of previously sold items. The need for one of those loco types has now disappeared thanks to a product from a different manufacturer, and the other loco I can live without for as long as it takes - for ever if the prices never fall far enough.

Never appear desperate to buy an item - it's very hard to get a fair price that way...
