micklner
Thanks Mick, I have to say I find Hornby's fixing of its bogies on its A1s/A3s/A4s the strangest of arrangements. Does it improve the bogie's road-holding? I find a simple pivoted link far simpler, much easier to remove and then put back, and much easier to adjust. I presume you mean the actual bracket? . Much better than a simple pivot in my experience as the angle push the bogie out/in on bend's to clear the cylinders. Comet do a similar one as a etch .
Tony Wright
Yes please! Here goes, then.................. RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted February 7, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 7, 2018 Any chance the front bogie wheels are lifting the drivers off the track? I ask as that was happening with one of mine. I should have added that I weigh the whole loco (minus tender) so the figure quoted is total, not adhesive weight. All the Carlisle pacifics have sprung bogies for better riding, although the trailing trucks are just going along for the ride. Sprung leading bogies provide some side control through friction but I've found it more trouble than it's worth on trailing trucks.

I will run while I have my legs attached now Regards Peter As Teaky says, they're not appropriate in original form on Tony's layout. I'd love one personally, but being an N gauge modeller, I'm on my own in making one (probably using a Farish A2, with an extra set of driving wheels, as a donor). Mine, if I ever manage to build it will be 2001 as built, Tim Watson is nearing completion of a very impressive 2mm scale version of Lord President and Graham King as done some lovely resin castings to cover the Hornby model into the other variations. For P2s, I guess Grantham the Streamliner Years (or maybe Gresley Beat) is the best layout to see some in action!

Tony Wright
What a great list and interesting reading – quite a few kits that I've not previously heard of. Thanks for your comments........ What I didn't want the list to come over as was in any way a 'status symbol'. I find pomposity abhorrent in any form, and what must not come over from my list is any thought of 'mine's longer than yours'! I've seen examples of, for instance, every single manifestation of A4s represented, but they're all RTR (obviously with adaptations). As I said in an earlier post, if current lists of locomotives (running on larger layouts) were published (in OO), then most would probably be RTR-based. As I've also said, I don't have a problem with that, as long as the RTR adaptations are done by the layout owner - otherwise they're just his/her possessions) but, years ago, loco lists tended to be made up of made-up locomotives, if you get my meaning. My list represents my personal loco-building journey, over over 40 years, and some of the older ones are not as good as more recent ones. As I alluded to, it also contains some which are the work of others (some 3%), and it's a privilege to own some locos made/modified by Tony Geary, John Houlden, Rob Kinsey, Roy Jackson and Rob Davey. Oh I don't think it came across at all as one-upmanship, more, as you write, a personal journey and after all I did ask to see the list. If the newer builds weren't better than the older ones that might be disheartening but since the opposite is true then you know how refined your work has become over time. I'd think that would and should be very satisfying. I might have to look up the names to correspond with your numbers. I've always thought the numbers were how railwaymen referred to locomotives but being a sucker for marketing I like their names as well. Of all the companies the LNER probably had the best of all. As much as I like those of say the Jubilees, I don't think you can beat the evocative nomenclature of the LNER. Almost the entire A3 class are gems with very few 'duds' amongst them. RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted February 7, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 7, 2018 Poorest names have to be: Sandwich, Salmon Trout, Melton and Fairway Hi David and All You can fun doubleheading some LNER locos, Salmon Trout and Sandwich. Lecorbusier
Poorest names have to be: Sandwich, Salmon Trout, Melton and Fairway What's in a name .... A rose by any other name would smell as sweet .... and vice-versa. For me the names on the 125s are/were all but meaningless .... yet appended to an A4 or a King or a jubilee ... well we all know how evocative they are. I like diesels and electrics much more than I used to and some of the layouts are stunning, but for me steam locomotives (love or hate them) have a soul and so a name becomes associated with a machine ... it is the machine that makes the name and not the other way around. Writing flying scotsman on a HST doesn't evoke anything. Thats not to say I don't like to see a HST or the Midland Pulman ... but rather that I don't really mind which one as I draw no real distinction. Edit - those who collect numbers may disagree, but then that is about numbers not names? Just a personal thing. However I would argue that Tornado goes a fair way to proving my point? richard i
In the main steam locos got a name and kept it. Modern naming policy seems to be for publicity purposes and then removing it at the next overhaul so they can do the stunt again. My perception might be off as I do not follow it avidly but that is how it appears. Richard
Woodcock29
I was convinced a few days ago by the above evidence, and more kindly provided by Andrew Emmett, that I had dropped a clanger with my tender for P2 Lord President: I have therefore taken steps to make it more authentic, including some beading (a shade too heavy?) around the altered access hole in the top rear fairing, although I haven't bothered with fine panel lines and bolt-heads. STA70912.JPG STA70915.JPG Nice one Graeme - now I really must get on and finish the plating on Woodcock's bow-ended tender. I presume yours is all done in plastic sheet? I haven't listed those locos running exclusively on the MR/M&GNR bit, nor any diesels. There are probably several mistakes and omissions. Thanks for this Tony - I've always loved looking at lists of locos on layouts and of course I've seen quite a number of yours so it makes it all the more interesting. Looking forward to catching up later in 2018. Andrew
Jesse Sim
Here goes, then.................. I've organised the list in class order, with a brief description of the origin of each loco. In most cases, any painting of the big green engines (and some of the lined black ones) has been undertaken by Ian Rathbone, and, more recently, Geoff Haynes. And, in almost every case of a listed kit-built or modified loco, it is my work. Which proves, if nothing else, after over 40 years of building locos, one can end up with quite a few!
