67A
Hi all, Thanks guys, cleared the decks in the den' late this afternoon to see how it looks in an uncluttered state, couldn't clear it all but its looking good Duncan, I don't know if it will be bigger than KL but I can tell you the layout will be about 22ft long plus the two spirals, the overall width will be 3ft. It will have to be made in sections to allow 'Bermuda Road' to be set-up on occasions. My first C&L kits arrived today, I now have these plus some standard rail and copperclad stuff with which to have a practise run, all I need now is somewhere to do it Will keep updating my progress. Cheers Mike
emt_911
Mike I'm looking forward to seeing Dent progress like KL has, but not at the same speed. The S&C seems to offer so many modelling posibilities without too much compromise. Duncan
Richmond Commuter
Hi Mike, With reference to your request for information on shunting practice on the S & C you maybe interested in the following. Page 50 of Life On The Settle And Carlisle Railway shows a brake van left on the down line at Garsdale whilst shunting takes place sometime in the 1960's. Whilst I appreciate that Garsdale isn't Dent it certainly gives a clear indication as to how things were done on the S & C in the 1960's Although I live in SW London I know the area around Dent station very well as my sister in law and her family live in Dentdale. No better place to be on a warm summer’s day but potentially down right dangerous in winter. Best wishes with your project. Richmond Commuter. 67A
Hi Richmond, Many thanks for your input, I have seen this photo and some old cine footage of wagons left of the main line whilst the loco's shunts the sidings, I can just presume that this was the general practise along the route. It will be fun doing so anyway.
67A
Hi all, Just an update to show the rebuild progress and a little bit of modelling in advance This is the current state of the rebuild outside, the 'den' is the cream building behind the greenhouse, note it reaches behind the garage on the right Sort of getting there on the inside now Inside is just awaiting plastering then electrics followed by decoration then I can start on building the railway, if I have any energy left Modelling progress on next post
67A
Modelling progress. I have made some moulds to produce about 3 scale miles of stone walling, tedious but much much cheaper in the long run. These are the original bought versions These are the moulds made from them These are the castings These have one coat of paint. Humbrol acrylic on one and Dulux tester pot on the other, which do you prefer? I have also bought my first C&L turnout kit to practise on so that will be featured soon. 7
67A
Hi all, C&L turnout kit proved to be the wrong one so there will be a delay on this. Edited April 7, 2013 by mike61680
RMweb Gold fishytrains Posted April 7, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 7, 2013 Looking at the two sets, and presuming the upper of the two is the Humbrol and the lower one the Dulux, I would say the upper one looks better. Mike Long time lurker on here!

Mike Long time lurker on here! Hi Mike, Thanks for 'coming-out' as they say. I have an apology to make, the picture above is all tester pot as I failed to post the humbrol and have only just noticed it Dooohhhhhhhhhhhh! The photo is on my other computer and I'll upload it over the weekend for you to compare. I hope to get the platering done over the weekend, it won't be too long before some modelling can get started - yipeeeee.
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted April 11, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 11, 2013 Good luck with this most worthy of prototypes, Mike, I'm very impressed by your determination and energy!
67A
Hi all, I finally feel as though I'm getting somewhere. The whole den is now plastered and the walls and ceiling painted with the woodwork in primer awaiting glossing. Here are a few pic's of the progress. First a couple of shots showing the plastering And this weekends efforts showing the paintwork almost complete Hopefully I will get the electrics and the laminate floor done next week then I can start some proper modelling. I just was not happy trying to do things on the dining room table, I like my workshop comforts too much.
RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted April 21, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 21, 2013 That is looking really good, Mike! A very professional job. Unlike my bunker, you have plenty of natural light. You must be itching to get going now! Jeff
RMweb Gold fishytrains Posted April 21, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 21, 2013 That is a great looking space! Looking forward to seeing the modelling taking shape. Mike
67A
Hi Jeff & Mike, Top marks to you both! I am itching to get going. I have the main baseboard skeletal frames cut and ready for assembly, just did not have the room to store them so I may just get these knocked up this week. I don't have the fiddleyard boards started or even planned yet as I am in the deliberating stage as to how they will be supported below the station boards, I don't like things geting in the way so I have a bright idea to mount a series of hinged brackets shaped like a letter 'F' ; the lower horizontal being the fiddleyard mount and the top horizontal the scenic section mount, if it works this will prevent a load of timber framing and supports getting in my way (JEFF, I KNOW YOU WILL NOT APPROVE) time will tell. I nipped over to Hattons yesterday and purchased a new Compound, 41157 in BR late crest, this is the first of several planned new editions to the 'Dent' scene, I have an original Hornby Compound but its tender drive and I detest that design. Gave the den a second coat of Crown Matt white this afternoon and it looks bleeding awful, I hope it dries ok.

artizen
Have you thought of doing this style of baseboard mount? http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=23577&whichpage=
67A
Have you thought of doing this style of baseboard mount? http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=23577&whichpage=43 Hi Artizen, That idea would not work for me as my fiddleyard will be directly below the layout, thanks for showing the option though. Hi BoD Yes its dry...... I have been very very busy since and will upload some photo's over the weekend, soon be time for some serious modelling....GREAT!!! RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted May 8, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 8, 2013 Mike - I hope your knee has recovered from your exertions. Looking forward to seeing the baseboards - are you including a helix? Jeff
67A
Mike - I hope your knee has recovered from your exertions. Looking forward to seeing the baseboards - are you including a helix? Jeff Hi Jeff, Thanks, the knee is on the mend but laying laminate on one leg is pretty tricky going! just the Scotia mould to fit and the den is COMPLETE I will be having two helix units, one at each end. Glutton for punishment eh! These will be the first items installed in order to position the baseboards and supports. I am curently constructing the first helix glueing the cork base on this weekend followed by the track then building it up circle by circle. KL is coming along nicely, I'm lurking in the shadows presently.
67A
Hi all, The usual tale of sorry and the usual excuse of 'too busy'. Anyway glad to report the den is all complete and I am moving 'stuff' in. I have attached a few pictures to show what it was to begin with and what it has tuned out like now. The first two show the 'shed' with my layout 'Bermuda Road MPD' erected, a view from both ends. Then following the disaster what I was left with as a starting point And the last few how its turned out. You can see I have begun on the spirals. Presently they are joined into full circles and cork underlay is in place ready for some track laying. YIPEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am also currently building the baseboards but must get the spirals in place to set-out the positioning, watch this space.
Andrew P
Hi Mike I too have had the odd LURKE and now just a read of the last couple of pages again, What a wonderful room and so much natural daylight as well, that is something I am lacking in my little Den, BUT maybe one day, who knows! RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted May 20, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 20, 2013 Hi Mike. Good to see you're posting again - and you've clearly been busy over the last 2 weeks. I agree with Andy about the lighting. I've no natural lighting in the bunker - unless I leave the door open. Not a necessity, but it does add to the "warmth" of the place. You will hopefully be able to start in full Dent-construction-mode soon. Best of luck with your Helix. Jeff
67A
Cheers guys, Its going to be a 'long drag' thats for sure. I had intended building all the baseboards while the den was being built but time waits for no man and things got in the way. No matter its all systems go now and I have no excuse as I have almost organised my tools and equipment which is my priority, I detest working in a mess. 67A
Hi all, Following a summer recess (good enough for the PM & his cronies.......) I am about to embark yet again on my 'Dent' S&C project. However having noted that the period I am modelling 1950's - 1960's the main lines were relaid in flatbottom track including pointwork and slip and the sidings remained in bullhead until lifted. I have tried on several occasions to get an answer from Pete at C&L if they provide turnout kits, single slip and track in flatbottom option without to date any success, does anyone know an answer to this or should I just accept the bullhead versions? Hope someone can help. P.S. Request also posted on the handbuilt track section. Mike
67A
Hi all, In addition to the above I am now back in modelling mode and will be updating with a few pictures of the slow progress made over the summer. The spirals are completed at both ends, the main baseboards are in place with track level in situ and the entrance and exit boards for the low level fiddle yard are also in place, only the two central fiddle yard boards to make and fit in place. Pictures will follow over the weekend... Mike
