The bricks have been collected in the form of two sheets of Slaters English Bond Plasticard, and the brickies have turned up to start work. Due to Health and safety regs and having no scaffolding they have decided to build the walls flat and hoist them into position when they are finished. Also they have brought along with them a card template for marking out and cutting the arches.

Some  pictures of progress so far. I am off now to clear up after them, and remove the cement mixer from the lounge before Mrs W Station gets home.

The bricklayers have had a busy day at Chevening Halt, and have managed to complete the arches on the bridge.

These have been made using a sheet of Plasticard Flemish bond brick, by turning the sheet and cutting a line of bricks you can get a pretty fair end of a brick layed vertically around the arch. To make it curve naturally I made a small nick with a scalpel, as shown in pictures. this has the effect of making the strip curve, and then it was glued in place with plastiweld and the next course butted up and fixed. I hope the pictures explain it better than me.

Off now to put my eyes back in their sockets.

Great work Adrian, and a fantastic application of arches. Of course, you can get pre-formed ones, but they're a precise geometry, and your method matches any given arch. Top marks to the brickies!

*Are they going to brick the undersides of the arches too?

Hi Lee, they have all knocked off for the weekend now, but say that bricking the underside of the arches is on the list of jobs to do. All the best Adrian

The bricklayers have finished at Chevening Halt bridge. A thin piece of card was used to make a template for the arched roof, and the Plasticard cut to size from that, I lightly rolled a curve in it with my fingers and then they were sprung into place and glued, with some card reinforcers to stop them distorting. Next stage will be to paint and weather the bridge, but this will have to wait till the painters come back from the Easter holiday. After that it will be the road surface, and the bridge coping stones to make and fix in place. Some pictures of progress so far.

Immaculate work Adrian, looking really good. For a small moment I thought you had also built another white painted arched bridge in the background of the bottom photograph - but then I realised my mistake. Have a wonderful Easter.

Cheers

John

Hi Adrian, I'm catching up and my finger is dabbing the craftsmanship button so often I'm afraid it'll wear out. I wasn't expecting your arches, they're great. :)

Popped down to Chevening Halt today to see if the painters had come back from the Easter break. It looks like they have made a bit of a start, because the bridge as been given a splatter of black and a splatter of grey from a rattle can, and then a wash of Railmatch rust. All this I found out from a passenger who had been waiting for a train and had watched them in action. He said that they were coming back next week to do the fiddly bits, and how could he get this paint off of his suit.

As soon as the Tarmac boys had left, the weeds started to grow.

The road, and coping stones for the bridge have been made using mount board with the paper surface peeled off to give some texture. PVA glue was used on the road surface prior to painting, this was just spread on in random patches and left to dry. This when sprayed with grey car primer gives a representaion of a poorly maintained and patched country road, some diluted brown umber water colour paint was also used.

The same mount board has been used for the coping stones, again with the surface paper peeled off and then sprayed from a distance with grey and black

from the usual rattle cans. I hope the pictures show what I mean. I am off now to get this tarmac from my shoes.

Wow Adrian, you've absolutely nailed that mate.

If it weren't for the backgrounds, I challenge anyone to tell that apart from the real thing! The textures, colours and foliage are just superb.

Well done mate!

Al.
