Recommended Posts

Busy busy busy. So, what do we have here then? 2 days of stinky filler, cutting, filing, filling, more cutting, filling, sanding, repeat......

The 37s as we all know were a minefield of detail variations. The biggies, such as roof boiler ports and bodyside footsteps are corrected in bulk here, after these its headcode boxes, nose end doors, lamp brackets etc.

It's surprising the number of paint colours one accumulates!

A few things currently progressing on the bench. First up, a 7mm Warwell wagon repainted into Departmental livery. Weathering next.

I am currently trying out various track components with a view to using them on a future layout. DCC Concepts, C&L and Peco. The concrete ballasted section here has been built up using Peco Individulay components, and gauged to 00 FS 16.2mm standard.

One of the many jobs this week, stripping down a batch of Heljan 47 chassis, replacing any worn parts with new, oiling, re assembly and testing. These things run as smooth as silk.

It's great running such a busy business, I count my lucky stars every day. The only downside is a lack of any time for personal stuff, decided to have a clearout of stuff that's been started, but not progressed for ages. Off to the loft with this lot unfortunately.

Lee

Looking very good, I do doubt the necessity on larger layouts of building plain track and do be careful if using 00SF on plain track when the curves are too tight, gauge widening will be required as with EM & P4 gauges. Certainly building your own turnouts looks much superior to RTR both in using prototypical geometry and if using 00SF(or any other fine scale) with finer flangeways.

I for one would in 00SF, EM and P4 gauges use flexitrack wherever possible, unless there are specific reasons or short sections between turnouts and crossings.

However for the sadists Peco do these DowMac ? style sleepers and fixings for 00 gauge, where as the C&L and Exactoscale ones are for P4 or EM gauges.

The Manchester Model Railway Society have 3 sections on modern track  http://www.mmrs.co.uk/technical-articles/modern-permanent-way/ this is section 1. I never knew there were so many variants (and they say chaired track is complicated) Unless you have historical photographic evidence who is to say what is correct. From normal viewing distances its difficult to see what fixings are being used, however the flowing design of both turnouts and crossings do set hand built track apart from the RTR counter parts at normal viewing distances.

Good luck

Good afternoon all. Well, it's fast approaching Santa time, and it's time to take some time off with family, eat and drink lots, and be very Merry! So Lee's Locos is closed next week. A big thank you to everyone who has once again supported Lee's Locos throughout 2018, another year which has seen a huge growth in business. I thank each and every one of you, without you lot, I wouldn't be where I am today. So, a very Merry Christmas and happy new year to you and yours, see you next year for another fantastic 12 months :-)

Best,

Lee.

And the same to you and yours, Lee! Many thanks for providing us with superb modelling diaries in these pages. Personally I’ve found much inspiration from your work.

All the best,

Jack.

First job to roll of the workbench this year...Heljan 0 gauge 37. The repaint and weathering is not my work, came to me for plated headcode panels, RSH cantrail dividers, soundfitting, and wiring the lighting up.

A very nice job whoever has done it.

So much 7mm stuff to work through this year. First in line on the bench so far this year are 3 25s, and a 128. The 128 has had the gangways removed, holes filled, and rivets added. The 2 25/0 have had nose end doors removed, all have been repainted in correct BR yellow.

It’s amazing how much O gauge you do now lee,

Heljan have really kept modern image going after the demise of JLTRT. I almost had a dabble till I realised the 25 doesn’t have a DCC socket....sod that.

Anyway best of luck for 2019 !

Shawplan bits and pieces. Some of the Extreme Etchings are rather fiddly, but well worth the work. Busy making a batch of class 56 horn covers up. The mesh pitch is truly microscopic, to exact scale. Even airbrushing, one has to be careful not to vlog the holes up! These have been etch primed prior to painting.
