My detailing/repainting projects

Another pair of Sutton sound 24s in for weathering. Truly stunning detail, but good God, trying to put the bogies back together after weathering led to the discovery of quite a few new expletives......

And what do we have here?.......

Doors for this little lot! Moving onto the next batch of Big Heljan 0 gauge 26s.

Much as I try to keep things ocd tidy in the workshop, the sheer volume of work makes it an increasingly difficult take. However, with a Vodka and Muse on the hi-fi, it's still a nice place to be :-)

  • 2 weeks later...

Major Holiday engineering works started on the layout. The turntable area has finally been filled, and new sidings laid. I am still not entirely sure if these are going to be mainly wagon repair or permanent way dept. The previous trackplan had an entry and exit track to both go on and off stage, these lines went under the small road girder bridges. We are now down to just the one for both entry and exit to the storage traverser, the other one is going to be a simple tarmac road leading into a staff carpark.

The traverser has also been built, I'm now scratching my head thinking about the best way to power and work it.

In this view, you can see that the line to the rear of the layout that had quite a steep climb up to the coaling stage has been removed. This whole area is going to be landscaped with an embankment. The front of layout facia boards have also been removed, new ones are to be made, and increased in height to get a bit of scenery in. Nice as the layout was, it was a bit too billiard table flat for my liking.

Well, that's Bachmanns new 2018/19 announcements out. They now seem to be following suit with Hornby, and ignoring the 1980s diesel era encompassing BR blue, large logo, and Railfreight liveries. On the one hand I fail to understand a manufacturers decision to miss out on this massive 40 something market, but on the other hand applaud it, keeps me extremely busy in the day job!

And off we go with the first of 2018's jobs  :paint:

Some of the piles of 7mm locos primed and ready for colours. First job in the workshop today was to build yet more shelcing for the ever increasing 7mm stocks.

Bachmann 4mm class 37 repainted into tatty EWS livery. An interesting one this, the customer sent me pictures showing the loco patch painted, where previous emblems had been painted out. The effect on the model is quite subtle, but captures the effect.

A pair of repainted Bachmann observation saloons. Some of the details are not 100% as per the prototype, but the customer did not want these correcting.

Bachmann class 37 nose end request.

Folks I am on the scrounge. I need a pair of class 37 centre headcode nose ends as per the picture, they must have the 2 small headlamp mounting brackets that are placed above the marker panel. I will purchase, or have numerous other types available for exchange. I am not bothered about the eth class 37/4 connector, but it's not an issue if present.

This afternoon I have started a pile of 0 gauge soundfits. 4 pairs of the new Heljan class 20s to be specific. These can be a bit of a squeeze. The centre of the chassis has a cavity where the XL soundchip can be placed vertically. Care must be taken...everything surrounding the chip is metal and a potential for chip destruction. I build a plasticard insulation semi box, which makes things even tighter, but makes for guaranteed electrical insulation.

The following 3 images give a taste of what is involved.

first...how are these chips going to fit in here?

Second...in and wired roughly for testing.

Third...tested and tidied. Now all we need to do is squeeze a speaker in somewhere!!

All your work is stunning but I particularly like the recent rail freight 31. Probably because I’m planning a similar one myself ! As a newcomer to class 31s , any suggestion as to where to fit a decent size speaker? Cheers , Ian

If I never see another one of these, I'll be a happy man lol  :scratchhead:

Heljan 7mm class 20, eighth one sound fitted so far this week.

No matter how many locos I work on, I never tire of the process.

Here we are right at the start, a recently arrived Heljan 7mm class 37 being stripped back to bare plastic before work commences.

Hi Lee,

I am liking the look of those Heljan class 20s. I am wondering if you could do me a favour when you get the chance. I have seen a pic of a 20 next to a class 37 and the class 20 looked a bit high. I could be the angle of the pic but I am wondering if you could measure the height of one for me or plonk it next to a class 37 or class 26, you seem to do a few of them.

Thanks Peter.

Will do Peter.

Can I ask what you use to strip them ? They don’t appear to be in any kind of Bath . I’ve used super strip but you certainly wouldn’t want that splashing about !

Hiya. My preferred brew is good old IPA.

A few of this weeks 'works in progress. First up, an 0 gauge Heljan Western, basic 'Desert Sand' livery elements have been applied. The rather weedy Heljan roof lifting eyes didn't survive the paintstrip/body prep stage, so they have been replaced with the rather hardier JLTRT fellas.

Super work all round.

Could I ask you what two shades you used for RS maroon 37401? You've got the two tones just right I'd say. (Didn't it have metal EWS beastie badges, though? Shawplan do them - or used to.)
