My detailing/repainting projects

I do like tha transfer stage, with the exception that is the pain of large arrows on 7mm models! A real ballache to get right.

I was sent this Zimo 7mm chip to fit into a big Western. Why on Erth would such a pitiful speaker be supplied for a loco that for once, has oddles of speaker space available?

A much better solution!

And finally, I have a 7mm loco just about ready to return to a customer in France. He voiced a bit of concern as to whether the Heljan packaging is up to the trip, my answer is yes as I generally add enough packaging to survive a nuclear blast. However, he decided to go a stage further, and sent me a rather sturdy plastic 'tube'. Pictured with a 7mm 37 to give a sense of scale. My local post office is going to love this one  :jester:

A lot of folk like to have a moan about issues with Heljans 7mm efforts, but it's not that long ago that big 0 gauge diesels were really rather crap.

Evening folks. With Mr Watermans announcement about Just Like The Real Thing being liquidated, I find myself with a couple of customer 0 gauge Railfreight class 26 conversions that need the JLTRT underframe air tank assemblies. Does anyone have any surplus I could purchase?

Some very tricky liveries approaching completion...

A few years ago I started helping a friend to construct a layout. Some of you may remember seeing it. Roughly based on Crianlarich. My friend has parted ways with the hobby, and the layout has returned here. The basic scenic work is complete, but there is still quite a ways to go. If I ever find some time, this is going to make a very nice layout.

So. What has been going on this week. In a word, lots!

I have been manufacturing 'car' style headlamps for 4mm Scottish class 37s for quite a while now. I had always been beaten with the same on class 26s, until now.

A trio of 7mm class 20s get their dayglo orange nose ends repainted into a slightly more authentic rendition of BR warning yellow.

Something I rarely do, wagon repaints. However due to the scarcity of these things on the used market now, I took the opportunity to have a go at some faded Railfreight HEA hoppers. Basic colurs are on.

40820273612_21c36510d7_o.jpghop by rothburyuk, on Flickr

And in comparison, these are standard Railfreight red, and will be finished ex works.

Built a few of these now, JLTRT air compressor tanks for 7mm class 26s. Unfortunately this is my last one, and I could do with a few more. Can anyone recommend someone who could maybers produce these, for instance as a 3d print?

Hi . Can I ask is that area on those 26s glossed or t cut prior to transfer application ? Just I’ve had some real problems with rail tech numbers and Microsol / decal fix that I don’t get with fox. The numbers just curl up and die! cheers , Ian

Hi Ian. If I do a full repaint, I then apply gloss varnish to get a mirror finish. If just renumbering on a factory finish, I'll just T-cut to a gloss shine.

If you are using Railtecs current 'film free' transfer stock, just use plain water, Microsol as you have discovered has the complete opposite effect of what it's meant to do.

Thanks ! I thought it was because I’d used t cut and it was causing a reaction . Good to hear from an expert as I’ve previosly had no problems .

A bit of progress on the wagon batch progress. Painted in various shades of faded Railfreight, I have started applying the transfers. It's interesting, at one point I would have made a huge effort to ensure everything was applied on each wagon exactly the same, and as accurately as possible. However one learns that this was simply never the case with the prototype, different sizes of logos, placement, weathering, dents, no 2 vehicles were ever the same. I'm looking forward to the weathering stage on these to create something a bit different.

This is a 4mm scale Heljan 26 I am detailing and fitting sound to. Using one of Charlies (DC Kits) fuel tanks with internal large speaker. The unit is a tad bigger than the existing tanks, I'll reserve judgement about how I think it looks until the weathering is complete.

On the subject of weathering, this is a factory weathered version, and displays one of my pet hates. The wheels have been weathered, but without removing the bogie sideframes. A very lazy approach.

I had a very enjoyable day at the York show on Saturday. After the inevitable pile of customer pick up and drop offs, it was nice to visit a few suppliers I hadn't seen for a while, and even get to view a few of the layouts.
One of said suppliers is Brian at Shawplan. Now I know Brian is a very busy chap, and I'm often guilty of cursing him because contact can be so difficult. But I , as a small business owner should really understand that....I certainly couldn't do what I do and then triple it again to undertake commercial projects.
So it was good to catch up, and drool over some of the truly wonderful bits and pieces that he keeps producing to satisfy our demand for ever more accurate and realistic models. As most of you will know I'm a big class 56 fan, and these little fellas are a fantastic idea. Beautifully etched, they are the rubber window grommets/surrounds for the Romanian class 56s. The idea is that they are painted black, a job which has previosuly been nigh on impossible to paint by hand on the existing mouldings on the model due to how fine they are. A very nice touch that will add further finesse to a well finished model.
I also like repalcing a lot of the cruder and older locomotive roof radiator fan grilles with finer etched versions....they are fiddly but make a world of difference. Pictured is a recently fitted Bachmann class 20, and an in the process of Heljan 0 gauge class 26.Cheers Brian for continually raising the bar  :sungum:
