PM47079
Hi. I don't use Railmatch for base colours...Phoenix Precision for me. Gloss varnish coats are always applied once all the base colours are applied, then transfers, and then the desired varnish finish. Thanks that explains the finish you are able to achieve with the transfers. It would be interesting if you did a stage by stage photo library of someone s loco from start to finish over the period you do it. I think a lot of people myself included would see just how much more you have to do than we think
7APT7
Hi Lee the last few comments about what paints you use and the using of gloss paint for transfer finished by you choice of Satin / Mat of Gloss varnish to hide the film on the transfers as been so educational. Yes I totally agree PM47079 about the step-by-step photo progress will help us visualise the time spent to produce your quality loco's. Always great to see what project you are doing. blueeighties
Hi guys. Thanks for those comments. unfortunately, due to the sheer volume of work I always have to deal with (I am a full time business for those of you who may not know), I struggle to find the time to photograph finished work let alone any detailed step by step progress shots. This has even prevented me from doing magazine articles. I always pinch myself that I'm so constantly busy with a full order book, but the only downside is that turnaround times can run very long for my poor customers. If you go back to some of the early days/pages of this thread, there are probably a few more detailed process pics as I had more time to do it then! blueeighties
Now then. The previously posted Tesco bag, crisp packet, and newspaper needed a home. So..... And yes there is a windscreen wiper missing, still got to add some further dirt to the bufferbeam pipes, and the windscreens. Other than the weathering, and the addition of some cantrail grille dividing bars (this is an RSH machine), pretty impressive for out of the box Heljan. forest2807
That 31 looks the part Lee. Did it start life as 31110 in Dutch? If so, did you strip the factory paint before respraying? The reason I ask is that I'm finding it hard to remove the factory paint job on a Hornby 56 with my IPA bath. It worked a treat on Bachmann paint but Hornby is proving more stubborn. I also use IPA and it works a treat. I can't remember what livery this was originally as I did it a while ago. Some locos can be more stubborn to strip than others...I think it's more to do with the differences in the plastic bodies rather than the actual paint. I always keep a bottle of Phoenix Superstrip in stock for anything really stubborn, but cant remember the last time I used it.

7APT7
Hi Lee Great liveries, it only seems to be GBRf that seems to push the boat out on the livery front, they all look great from 718, 720, 721, to 779 it's great that those have been commissioned to be made, its makes the modern image look really good, livery wise thanks to GBRf. blueeighties
We all have our working practises and techniques. I like to try and experiment and improve, but time is always of the essence with a full workbench. Something I have been meaning to try for a while is 'pre-shading'. Basically colouring an area before the top coat goes on, in this case bodyside grilles and some nooks and crannies....always caked and thick with crud on the prototype, hopefully doing this will improve the final weathered effort. The following photos show what happens as the many livery coats are applied. Blue is quite translucent, even after the 10 or so coats required to get to proper colour density. 1 by rothburyuk, on Flickr 2 by rothburyuk, on Flickr 3 by rothburyuk, on Flickr 4 by rothburyuk, on Flickr 5 by rothburyuk, on Flickr 6 by rothburyuk, on Flickr 7 by rothburyuk, on Flickr
