Bright spark alert - that'll be a strimmer. Mind you were they around then?

Whenever I ask questions like that I suddenly find that RMWeb has many experts on *any* given subject. I once asked a quick question about telegraph poles and had over a dozen in depth replies. All of them very useful, and most of them interesting!

Well, someone has to reply.  The short answer is 'No'.

I have a picture of me trimming the edge of our grass with a pair of shears with my first son crawling along side of me, so that must have been the summer of 1984.  Whether there were no strimmers by then or just that we could not afford them then I am not sure.

Well just to finish it off, I built the grass box.

I took a 4.8mm diameter piece of tubing, and sliced it lengthways:

Then I stuck a square of 10thou styrene on each end:

post-17302-0-65372700-1416509429_thumb.jpg

Then I filed off the square edges, and added two tiny bits of styrene as supports:

and finally added a thin strip along the top front edge:

Then I painted and weathered it, and here we are:

All done now.

I can't do anymore tonight, I've got to work, but hopefully something tomorrow.

Thanks for looking

Al.

It might work with Sasquatch .....LOL

Mrs S. does the grass! She's got one of those ride on jobbies. I'm not allowed to use it as I race around in 6th gear! Good for clearing the leaves at this time of year too, just ride around in decreasing circles until there's a big pile of mulch!

Mind boggling modeling, that's just A1 AL!

I think I'll be referring to you as A1 (as in one) instead of AL in future haha.

I didn't get any time to do any modelling at all over the weekend, what with one thing and another, but this evening I did a little bit.

I took some 10thou plasticard, and cut out a "net" - a flat shape that when folded up will form the object I'm  modelling.

post-17302-0-96546100-1416858678_thumb.jpg

Here it is folded:

post-17302-0-01530600-1416858690_thumb.jpg

Then I took a length of 0.5mm round rod, and gradually formed it into the shape I wanted:

Have you worked out what it is yet?

Here's the finished item:

And now painted up and weathered:

I also took some time to paint up a couple of figures.

I reckon these Dapol figures scrub up quite well, really:

That's all for now,

Have to agree with you about the Dapol figures A1!!

Ever tried swapping their heads for a bit of variety? or adding various other embellishments such as bags, tools and mugs of tea etc??

Thanks Shaun, love it!

No, I've not got that brave yet, but I might give it a go. I need someone to shove the lawnmower around, but none of the figures have suitable poses, so I might try a bit of surgery, the odd limb here and there, you know...

I love scrolling down new entries on this thread, before reading the text, and seeing a triangle, or circle of plasticard as it grows into some tiny masterpiece of modelling. Two more fantastic examples above. Thank you so much for sharing and inspiring.

Thanks Jamie, it's very kind of you to say so, and I'm glad that you find it interesting.

Cheers,

Al.

IMHO, a figure pushing it would look frozen in time, far better to a still figure, mopping his brow or something.

Still far far better than I could do anyway.

Cheers Andy, that's a good point, I'm not particularly fond of the "frozen-in-time" look, either. Better to have a static scene with no action, than an action scene that's static...

Al,

More seriously.  Your skill with cutting plastic will easily transfer into changing figures around.  The easiest thing to do is just change which way they are looking.  Once you have got over cutting off the first head you will be away.

you needed some tape on the end of the handles usually painted green or black......this is really nice.......

BUT the lawnmower was a seriously good piece of modelling, even the shiny green.....you can almost here the petrol motor noise!!!!!!!!!

Come on a picture of it on the layout????? pretty pls.

Today, I was visited by Marcus37 and his family.

It was great to see them, and meet someone who I've only ever spoken to here on the forum.

Marcus had a good look round the layout, and offered some hepful advice regarding the running problems with various locos.

We also had fun trying out a new purchase of mine, the Branor Cam Truck, video from which I hope to post later.

Here's the gulty party caught red handed in the cellar:

If I can get the video edited, I'll post it later tonight.
