Crisis Rail
Strange how I miss this even in original form - there is just too much on RM Web to follow..! Heavy industry - excellent bring on the filth and grime. Like the loading area plenty of slow speed operation into the building - rusty plates and FLT good although as a driver myself his forks look a bit high on travelling Now following Ian
Fat Controller
Hi Jez I can't believe I haven't seen this layout before! In terms of concept it's right up my street - especially all the heavy industry and steel traffic! It's tough when you've put in a lot of work and realise that what you've produced isn't what you want, but that is part of the learning process and we've all done it - I know I have! TBH often it's the only way you actually learn! I am sure that the lessons from your original build will be put to good use, and now I know about your thread I am looking forward to following your progress. On another note, I noticed a couple of pages ago you were asking about the large loading forklift. We used the same model on our club layout Horseley Fields, which is a representation of Wolverhampton Steel terminal in N. The model depicts a vehicle designed for use intermodal container lifting, and on the real things the cabs can be raised up to see over the containers. The model comes with an extended or flat cab base, so just used the non-extended version. This is a photo of the real thing: Fork lift.jpg I epainted ours to represent the vehicle used at Wolverhampton steel terminal. As far as I can tell, coils are more usually lifted via the overhead crane though, with the forlift used for steel plates and rods. A couple of shots of the model: IMG_0688.JPG IMG_0444.JPG I cheated a bit with the hazard chevrons, using the black ones provided in the kit as they were sized and shaped appropriately rather than trying to replicate the red of the real thing! cheers Ben A. When I've seen forklifts being used to lift coils, they've tended to have a 'C' shaped hook which fits over the forks. Similar hooks are used on overhead cranes on this work as well. shanks522
Hi Jez, Looking forward to the new improved Lackenthorpe, I take it the new layout is going round the whole shed? Graham.
Mr Pix
Hi Jez, Looking forward to the new improved Lackenthorpe, I take it the new layout is going round the whole shed? Graham. Thanks Graham .... Yes it will go round the hole shed with a long narrow fiddle yard on the other side.Jez
Mr Pix
Hi All A bit of progress on the main line that will run between the works and depot, which will then run around the back of the depot hidden by a embankment and pipeline to link to the fiddle yard. Placed some track to see how the depot area will take shape and to see which one of the two (flat or pitched) three road maintence/repair buildings fits in with the Farish two road service/refueling building. Added two doors in the closed position just to see how it looks. A few photos of progress with a 37 on a metals trip working passing by. shanks522
The Depot looks good in that position Jez, plenty of space which always helps, also like the doors shut on the Farish building. Graham.
Removed a/c
Very nice, think I prefer the flat roof depot building though.
RMweb Gold Revolution Ben Posted January 12, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 12, 2015 HI Jez, I agree about the flat roof version. Somehow more utilitarian and brutal, but in a good way.... Cheers Ben A.
Mr Pix
Hi All A bit of progress on a structure for the works.....no steel works is not without a gas holder. So here is my attempt at a holder in half relief.....used a coffe tin for the basic shape and cladded it with ribbed paper then used wire garden tyes for the frame work,a splash of blue and bit of weathering. I think the proportions look about right and its pretty deep , but the top is sagging so some internal support is required. Arthur
Not sure if it's still available but the 00 Bachmann Scenecraft gas holder, though far too small for 00, would look pretty good in 2mm, particularly with the steps replaced. It's a waterless type as commonly used at steelworks. It's only half relief so really needs to be placed against the backscene. Not cheap but, if it suits, it saves a lot of work. I've used one in the background for photo's (4mm). Edited February 7, 2015 by Arthur

Mr Pix
Hi All Some more progress on structures for the works..... First building will be a junction building to link the cokeing plant to the coal bunkers or coal discharge building by conveyors where the MGR hoppers will be emptied. The MGR discharge building is a basic building which will have conveyors at either side, one will go to an outdoor coal heep the other to the junction building with various options. The last picture is a ruff set up of how this part of the works will look. Jez

Mr Pix
Hi All Have been looking at where the works buildings will be placed.... some times i will lay the track around the buildings as in this instance with such large structures and conveyors between them..... The depot area will be the opposite. Glued down the coal bunkers which are linked by a conveyor to the coal discharge and other structures, so able to lay the track that will go through the discharge building and a line that will by pass it. Coking plant looks about in the right spot with the two line passing by. So here are a some photos of progress with a 56 and 37 on some MGRs. shanks522
Hi Jez, The layout is coming along well, I really like how the trains are dwarfed by the buildings/structures. Graham.
Mr Pix
Hi all A bit more progress on the fiddle yard that runs along the shed on the opposite side of the layout, laid some track and can fit in 25 MGRs in one through loop, this will be the standard length of my MGR trains that will run to the works powered by class 56,37s or pairs of 20s. A bit of progress around the coal discharge area keep moving the conveyors around, have laid a bypass line around the discharge shed. Had a go at making a door section axcess bridge that opens at an right angle, so i will be able to complete a full loop around the shed. Now the hard bit..... getting the track to align and wiring it up. Off on thursday so will give it ago, got all day will need it!!!! Jez
shanks522
Hi Jez, Coming together nicely, I know i've said it before but i love way the buildings dwarf the trains, Excellent! Door access looks good, not to complicated and practical, look forward to see some trains running. cheers Graham.
Mr Pix
Hi all A bit more progress. Got a complete full loop (single at the moment) with the door section lined up and wired in, also got the controller fixed under the fiddle yard so able to run test trains. Always wanted a pair of 20s and managed to pick up a second new weathered one at Modlrail Scotand from DPS stand for £70. Ran it in on the loop with my first one, they look good on 25 MGRs. More testing and will get more track laid with some reception sidings for the works. Cheers.......Jez
shanks522
Hi Jez, The layout is looking better and better everytime! The door section really is excellent, are you running double track over it eventually? Graham.
Mr Pix
Hi Jez, The layout is looking better and better everytime! The door section really is excellent, are you running double track over it eventually? Graham. Thanks Graham.....yes will have double track running over it. Will have two ovals connecting the works and depot on one side of the shed and passing through the fiddle yard and door section on the other. Mr Pix
Hi All A bit more progreess.....Have connected the works to the main line, a single track which crosses over the the access to the works buildings for loading of finished steel products accessed from the reception sidings. In the prosess of laying track to form the two sets of reception sidings and the depot area.....near completion will post some photos later. Cheers Jez
Mr Pix
Hi All Just finished laying the track for the MPD, decided to go with the three road pitched maintenance/repair building and the Farish two lane for service/refueling. Not keen of having a through road building which is a dead end not prototypical, but will use siding ends for stabling snowplough or stores van along with locos. Track still not dry but placed some motive power just to see how it may look at a weekend..... plenty of TYPE 5s!!! A lot more work required to get to my liking. Thanks for looking.
