The intrepid Google Streetview camera car ventured for several miles along the farm track skirting the Claerwen Reservoir in mid-Wales. The first visit was in very poor weather in 2009. A later visit in better weather in 2011 went only part of the way. Ozexpatriate Posted January 30, 2013 Share Posted January 30, 2013 Google "Street view" is available for more than streets. Bike trails are accessible with the 'trike'. (You can see one circling stonehenge.) There are also versions of the camera strapped to snowmobiles, and the trolley for shopping malls, museums, etc. Not only that, there are underwater versions too. You might find this entertaining. (I had to use Chrome to see these. IE8 didn't know what to do with them.) Perhaps not 'in the wild' but "in the hobby shop" is available at Platform 1 in Great Yarmouth. RMweb Premium corneliuslundie Posted January 30, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 30, 2013 I've looked a bit more in mid Wales, and Llyn Clywedog area is also covered as well as lots of roads in the forests near Llyn Brianne including the one to Capel Soar y Mynydd, which must be one of the most remote Welsh chapels still in regular use. But to justify this being on RMWeb I'll point out that the road on the east side of the original Elan Valley reservoirs was originally a railway line, built when the reservoirs were created. RMweb Gold martin_wynne Posted January 30, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 30, 2013 The opening of the Claerwen Reservoir in 1952 received much publicity at the time -- not so much because of the civil engineering achievement in building the dam, but because it was one of the first public engagements of the newly installed Queen Elizabeth. I'm just old enough to dimly remember the family talking about it (I was 4 at the time), and shortly afterwards a family outing to see it and have a picnic at the dam. And the RMweb connection? In much secrecy the Royal Train spent that night parked in the platform at the closed Harton Road station on the Much Wenlock branch, because the Queen was visiting Shrewsbury next day. Harton Road had closed the year before. So if you are modelling a GWR branch line, your stock is not as restricted as you may have thought. Martin.
