"Ivor the engine" comes of age, in 7mm, by OzzyO & friends.

A bit more progress from N Wales.

All the major items have been cut from the fret and a start made on bending up the various bits.

OzzyO shaped the ends of the splashers before bending down the sides but I decided to do it differently bending the sides down first. A slice of 40mm dia plastic tube will be put between the splashers to bend the ends to shape.

Don't forget to solder the fixing nut's in place now before it becomes a big heat sink for the soldering iron, also keep test fitting the footplate to the frames to check clearances.

Pete

Thanks for the reminder Pete, must remember to pick some brass nuts/bolts etc at Wigan next weekend. Trouble with being a newbie at this is I don't have a box of spare parts to fall back on.

Well, I guess I'd also best post some pics.

Couple of things to do still:

Railings

Steps

Wheel spokes

Counterweight*

Pickups

DCC

Painting

*I have a weight from a Hornby HST kicking about that will fit perfectly behind the smokebox door.

I've discovered two things though, I've managed to fit a 20mm flywheel inside, as its quite a small motor. I found the side tanks a little tricky as there are a few gaps, so I had to "best fit".

There's been trouble!

Ivor got out, and decided to go for an explore, even though he's not ready for the big wide world.

The much more sensible 'William', decided to go after him...

Ivor headed out across the mud flats...

and bumped into a giant!

Fortunately the giant was reading, and otherwise had her attention elsewhere. William turned up at this point...

Ivor learnt today that he is not to go outside until he's finished.

Thinking about what pickups to put onto Ivor. I'm looking at probably Slaters plunger pickups, but I've heard Gladiator do a more robust, but larger design. Can anyone make any recommendations or even post a pic of their Ivor set up? I'm leaning towards Slaters as I've used them before.

The kit has been designed to use Slater's pickups but I like Redgates wiper pickups and they do work very well and are nice and simple so you could try those.

Still got a little touching up silver on red and black, it's almost ready for the decals.

The whistles are not fixed in place yet.

You ask the question at an opportune moment, I have always used wipers, and on occasions when I have tried plungers I have failed miserably, however, as the kit was designed for Slaters pick-ups, and as there were already holes in the frames, I decided to give it another try.

I think past experience has failed because the wires I used were too thick, and impaired movement. Apart from slightly reaming the holes out I have slipped Slaters plungers in and they appear to be doing the job very well. I used a very light wire, with plenty of free movement.

Progress has been slow this week, with the wheels receiving a skim in the lathe to take the paint off,

and the arrival of chips for Ivor and some of his friends,

which has enabled a start to be made on wiring, as shown above the pick-ups were fitted and the 'stay-alive' capacitor fitted to the chip.

before re-assembling and running in to bed everything down.

Now all that left on the wiring is the connection of lights, smoke, and the 'cheap sound' experiment.

Good idea - if you can put it onto a tapered rim, I have to say I had to re-finish two of mine when the emery paper slipped and scratched the balance weights so it's a good idea if you can, otherwise, if I were doing them again, I would cut circles in thick card and push them in.

With Craig's (Coldgunner) help i've managed to get the lights working permanently in both directions on the decoder, and Ivor has started to make the house very smelly. Now it's only the 'Psst-koff' to sort out, but this will take a bit longer, there's also not much room left in the boiler, and there's no lead in there yet either.
