My latest effort, based on a slightly rundown shed at Haymarket depot...

I saw these on your thread Dave, and I thought then that the two top photos are indistinguishable from the real thing, really superb.

My humble offering of a nearly finished Harbour Master's office for my Salcombe Harbour layout. Just the guttering and downpipes to paint and stick on and then adorn with sign posts and lifebelts.

Please excuse the rather messy work area.

Very nicely done. I like the quions around the doors and windows, and the tiling on the gable.

Finally finished this building!

The slates went on today - they were from York laser, and pretty good. They still took long enough to put on, so doing it totally by hand would have been a right 'mare!

The door has also been added (etched brass with a dress makers pin for a knob......)

There will be another building stood in front of the pale bit in the middle!

Nicely done Giles.

Do the slates come ready coloured?

Hi ALAN,

They come a uniform grey, and of course they the need working into a bit afterwards - but I would certainly use them again - they worked well, and saved a lot of trouble....

I worked into them with thin enamel washes, then a water based wash, a scrub over with graphite powder, then a little dry-brushing.

Just to echo Giles recommendation of the York lazer cut slates. I have found them really good to work with.

I probably hacked them around just a little too much on this building (using a scalpel to nick odd ones, and cut some out and slip them down a tad like an old slate starting to come loose).

Painted and weathered (Humbrol stale grey, which is quite a green grey).

Page 6 on my layout thread has a bit showing their use, and painting up.

Here are a couple of my efforts at scratchbuilding. Not great, but making progress nonetheless! Public House on the left and Station Masters House on the right, followed by a Goods Shed. All in 4mm scale.

The pub was made from 5mm foam board covered with PVA and Polyfilla. Windows were laser cut (custom made) with opening top windows by L Cut Creative. The roof tiles are from Barleycorn Designs.

The House was my very first attempt using 5mm foam board and Slaters plasticard. Windows were made from Plastruct strips (never again!)

The Goods Shed was made using 5mm foam board, covered with 7mm Slaters Plasticard. Roof tiles were Barleycorn Designs and windows were from Brassmasters (etched Brass used for Scalescenes kits).

Not quite the standard of some of them on here!!! I am blown away by the skill and attention to detail from the modelers on here.

I stumbled on this and I love some of the details - the mould around the gutter spout is brilliant!

A rather simple project but this small workshop has just come off my cutting mat .. and it marks a bit of a switch to using plastic sheet rather than paper and card. (I make no claims to have built the hoist, which is a Bachmann item to complete the picture!)

The High Street

John Ahern’s high street really intrigued me the way it curved round into the distance and was the inspiration for my high street.   The buildings are based on those in the area around Kelso Square.

Initial concept.
