There are houses in the US for sale advertised with a half bathroom.  The mind boggles . . .

Just a toilet and a sink - no bath or shower.

Possibly because at one time the toilet (after it moved indoors) was in the bathroom?

In my grandparents' house the toilet was in a separate room to the bathroom.

I thought that was normal?

Better as then you can use the bog when someone's having a bath!

Which was a bit awkward because you had to go in to the bathroom to wash your hands.

When I was in the army, when at a party, I went to the men’s room, finished and went to wash my hands. Another fellow, a navy man also used the facilities, then turned to leave without washing.

I shouted “oi, in the army, they teach us to wash our hands afterwards “

His response “in the navy, they teach us to not pi55 on our hands”

My parents' house was built c. 1960 with toilet and bathroom separate - hand basin in the toilet, I think. Door side-by-side at the top of the stairs - or rather, the toilet door on the line of the stairs, with the bathroom door facing the landing. Almost the first thing they had done when they moved in in 1972 was to have the wall between the two removed and the toilet door frame removed and the space replaced with plasterboard. Our house, built around the same time, has had the same modification, so I conclude it was the fashion in the early 70s.
