Just seen your doing the china clay pba wagon for Kernow models spot on been waiting for these wagons for year looking forward for them to arrive next year :-)

On the subject, what is the chance of any of these lovely models that Kernow keep commissioning appearing in N gauge? I would be up for a D600, O2 and maybe even a Well tank if they existed.

  • RMweb Gold

Who wouldn't be up for a Beattie Well Tank in N, that would be a (rare these days) "Rule 1" purchase for me certainly.

Preferably 30585 with the round rather than square splasher.

Here you go Roy, Beattie's in 2mm. I built the shed  etc but the locos are the work of the brilliant John Greenwood

Hi, it's been cad/cam'd and is currently waiting it's turn in the tool room.

This will happen once a few have been released to allow for cash flow.

For further updates, please keep looking at the 'timeline' page of my website for all updates.

Cheers

Dave

Not that I'm interested in buying one, but I would like to see it do well so that it leads to other locos I would like to buy

I've struggled to keep up with all the announcements, and I know others have too. The DJM website is not easy to navigate (it's more of a blog) and needs updating to make the all the proposed products clearer. I've tried to make a list so that those interested can keep updated. Hope this makes a good reference! It might be useful to put delivery dates on if time can be found. Similar lists for other companies might also be worth doing. Forgive me if I've missed anything or made any mistakes. Regards Igor.

I'm not very happy with Mr Jones at the present. This Gentleman has not only taunted me with the promise of a GWR 1361 tank and a GWR Railmotor via Kernow Models;  a GWR King and a GWR 14xx via Hattons, BUT he is also making me wait for them! Where's instant gratification when you need it?

Joking aside, I am very pleased by these announcements and whilst neither the railmotor nor the King are truly suitable for my layout (era/location), who cares? I am sure that I can find some sort of plausible explanation for their inclusion in my fleet.

It will be interesting to observe what the pundits will say if a head-to-head comparison is made between the DJM and Hornby King models. Even with all else being equal, I think that Dave's customer commitment and QC standards will give the DJM model the edge. Some have also bemoaned the 14XX as being a duplicate of an existing (Hornby) model. Quite frankly, although a neat little model, it is very much long in the tooth and a state-of-the-art model is long overdue.

I am looking forward to getting these models.

p.s. if a corporate customer would commission a GWR toplight to current standards from DJM, I would be a very happy camper indeed and immediately sign up to buy quite a number (and probably get into hot water with SWMBO due to an "excessive number of purchases")

Hi  Igor  et al.   Well done, you must be a true rivet counter to have checked up on all those projects, I thought the number had only reached about 120 versions including all livery variations ( You did not give those in some cases such as 10 x LSW road vans and 7 x O2s and 4 x Gate stock )  I have no idea how many versions of some other items will be done but one could assume at least 4.  This means you have identified about 40 more than I had roughly counted.    Should put DJ models on a par with Hornby in 2 years time, just wonder how the half a million pound losses by the latter have been been achieved under the circumstances prevailing here and in China, bearing in mind how few totally new models Hornby have spent money on recently ..        Regards  adrianbs

Hi  All,  You ask what I am getting at.  At the present moment both Hornby and Bachmann have released trading figures which show significant losses I believe. Both companies already have enormous established ranges to fall back on financially and, as we all know, have not released many totally new products on the UK market over the last 2 years.  They have therefore not been investing proportionally a great deal of money in new tooling compared to their overall expenditure.  Whilst their losses are not all due to the UK market for model railway products it does give a very bleak picture of current trading conditions.  Bachmann have already announced, earlier in the year, HUGE price rises and if the next round of Chinese Government 20% wage rises comes in during the 2nd quarter of 2015 there is little doubt that prices will rise again.   In order to compete with Bachmann it seem that Hornby have decided to avoid massive price rises by reducing trade discounts to about half and going for direct online marketing, often offering discounted items at less than trade price, on their shop site, when they have surplus stock.. I believe they have suggested that since there is no retail price maintenance in operation now, shops that find they cannot survive with the reduced discounts are perfectly at liberty to sell ABOVE RRP.  There is less than a snowballs chance in hell that shops will be able to try that one on with their customers who will immediately quote the Hornby list price as an absolute maximum or they will buy elsewhere.

,  The smaller retail shops and perhaps some of the larger mail order specialists will be badly hit by this as apart from Hornby Railways with all it's sub divisions they also often stock   Scalextric. Corgi, Vanguards, Airfix kits and Humbrol paints, all of which come under the Hornby umbrella and which I assume will also be subject to the same discount levels.  Unless the newcomers are able to produce enough new products to replace all these income streams within one or two years the shops may have gone by then. Many are already having a hard time as has been noted earlier with lack of supply of new and existing lines from Hornby and also from the newcomers.  Hornby may well be quite happy to see many retail outlets close having set up their own outlets and mail order department. Not only will this increase their margins but will mean that other suppliers such as Bachmann, Dapol, DJ Models and Oxford rail who sell or wish to sell via these shops will have a reduced number of stockists.

It may be pure coincidence that Hornby have been working on a Radial tank, GWR King and class 71 electric but their announcement is clearly intended to make potential customers think twice about committing to other models before a comparison of the models can be made, even if Hornby are slower (Delberately ??) to the market..    Since the actual rate of introduction of new products by the newcomers has not exactly been significant it seems unlikely this will stave off the problems of retailers.  Hornby have yet to announce their full program for 2015/6 so there just might be other unwelcome news for the new entrants to this market and Bachmann may also decide that competition would be good for the market and especially for them.  Committing to the sort of range announced by DJ Models leaves them open to duplication but we all know " All's fair in love and war"  Bachmann and Hornby both have very large armies and powerful weapons and are not going to lie down and be walked over.

       Regards all  adrianbs
