Sam

was it specific wagons or combination of wagons which derailed?

you could try adding a little weight to the wagons.

Hi Gary

The worst offender was 97303 - a Hornby TTS loco. This is fairly light compared to the Bachmann offerings so I might see if I can add some weight in the body - thanks for the tip.

Cheers

In my last update I hinted at a bit of yellow. Well no yellow in sight yet but slowly getting closer.

I had a chat with Mick (newbryford) at the DEMU showcase last year and ever since then I've been wanting to have a go at creating some National Rail test coaches. As I already have 97303, I wanted a short formation that had been seen with 303 at the helm. After a while scouring web and I settled on a UTU formation of 6262, 999602 and 9703.

So I started with this lot:

post-17057-0-45339300-1455820960_thumb.jpg

The aim is to get all the coaches ready for a visit to the paint shop at the same time.

I thought I'd start with possibly the easier of the conversions, 6262

post-17057-0-05530400-1455821028_thumb.jpg

Marking out which windows to keep, which to fill and which to make into vents (helped by images from Mick's "Mostly Yellow" thread)

post-17057-0-86611300-1455821028_thumb.jpg

Blanks & vents added to one side

post-17057-0-58895600-1455821029_thumb.jpg

Then the next side

post-17057-0-96728900-1455821030_thumb.jpg

Fill, sand, repeat....

post-17057-0-27440200-1455821030_thumb.jpg

Some end detailing.

The next update will (hopefully) show some progress on UTU3 999602.

Cheers

Might have a go at 6262/6263, I have some BGs sitting around, might as well use them for something

In my last update I promised UTU3 was next on the workbench. Well, it still is but I got a bit distracted by a new kit from Scale Model Scenery.

post-17057-0-66838400-1456752603_thumb.jpg

Mobile mast and equipment box. Once glued up the thin card structure is really quite strong. I really should have spent longer scoring the joints on the main upright as this would have meant a better finish, but all in all, not bad for an evening's work.

Prior to painting replaced the card wispy antenna with wire ones.

post-17057-0-24897100-1456752613_thumb.jpg

Some fine black wire was added as cabling from the equipment box to the mast then the whole lot fenced in, again with fencing from Scale Model Scenery.

A few weeds and it should look right at home!

Cheers

Time for an update on the National Rail Coaches.

Next up is UTU3 999602. This coach has been refurbished a few times over it's life with major changes to window layout. I'm aiming to model the current state.

I started off with a Replica Railways Mk1 BG. (I now know this is the wrong coach as it's too short.... Nevermind)

post-17057-0-29344300-1457642337_thumb.jpg

I tried to keep as much of the original coach as possible to retain some strength.

post-17057-0-13623300-1457642339_thumb.jpg

On to the other side.

Blanked all the existing windows so I had a blank canvas to work from.

post-17057-0-78652800-1457642468_thumb.jpg

The windows don't look to be a standard size so a guessed the measurements based on photos.

Getting there slowly!

Any comments or thoughts are always welcome.

Cheers

Great work on the network rail coaches. I too had a long discussion with mick albeit at warley last year. And went through the same techniques. Very interesting and i will make start on mine one day!

Thanks Peter, you should definitely have a crack at some NR coaches. They are quite good fun and the kind of project you can do bits on whenever you have 5 minutes.

Work on the third NR coach continues (slowly), mainly due to another project I have been working on....

My eldest son's 6th birthday is rapidly approaching and he wants his own train set (Daddy won't let him play with Daddy's layout!). I asked him what sort of train he wants and following a recent trip to London on a Virgin Pendolino he said he wants "a London Train". I picked up a Hornby DCC fitted Pendolino set from ebay and have been busy making a baseboard. Space is at a premium so a layout on wheels that would fit under his bed is needed.

It's mostly made an 8' x 4' sheet of 6mm exterior birch ply with 19mm square softwood for the supports and 12mm ply for the two board joining faces. The friendly chap at Selco made most of the main cuts which made transporting the wood home a lot easier!

post-17057-0-45306500-1458229930_thumb.jpg

"No nails were hurt in the making of this board" Just plenty of PVA and clamping.

post-17057-0-94818300-1458229938_thumb.jpg

post-17057-0-56149700-1458229949_thumb.jpg

With the strengthening crossbeams in place the board are quite solid.

post-17057-0-52207000-1458229919_thumb.jpg

The two boards are joined with alignment dowels and two toggle catches.

The surface is 1800mm x 1100mm so just enough room for a couple of ovals and a couple of sidings.

This will be no work of art or exhibition standard layout. My son loves "crafting" so he will be doing all the scenery. Looking forward to some Daddy & Son time, getting covering in poster paint & saw dust!

<edit to add a trackplan>

post-17057-0-31535600-1458230803_thumb.jpg

That's all folks.

Great start there on what's yet another Daddy and Son layout. There has been quite an influx of "play" layouts for kids over the last few months, welcome to the club!!  Who said the hobby is dying?

Will you be keeping the updates in this topic of starting a new one dedicated to the build?

Shall be watching your progress with great interest.

Thanks Jaggz - your "family" layout was one of the reasons I thought I ought to make a layout for my boys. Unfortunately the need to fit the layout under a single bed limits the size and the ability to have an "up & over".

Not sure it will generate enough progress to warrant it's own topic - I'll probably just put the occasional progress photo in this thread.

Thanks for the comments!

Glad my layout has given you some inspiration.  Getting the track down quickly and operational was the key thing as the patience of little ones is quite short ;-)  But at least you are starting from scratch, I had to rip up the original play track loops to get the baseboard clear before I could start, which was a bit like taking a favorite toy away!

With regard to storage of your Son's layout, did you consider the option of a hinged wall layout over the bed with a pulley system? and fold down legs, like the first one shown here http://www.newrailwaymodellers.co.uk/base_board.htm

Time to share more progress on the NR test vehicles.

The third and final coach to join my test train will be the Remote Train Operating Vehicle (RTOV) 9703. This started life as a Airfix Mk2 BSO. Most of the work is concentrated at the brake end with the end windows and gangway blanked off.

Using several photos for reference I then marked out the new window positions

post-17057-0-80294300-1459765492_thumb.jpg

Roughly drilled & filed windows

post-17057-0-41665200-1459765495_thumb.jpg

Next I moved one vent and made up another

post-17057-0-87718600-1459765493_thumb.jpg

Whilst I was looking at the roof details for 9703 I thought I ought to check the other two coaches. Decent photos of roof details are hard to come by but using glimpse from the more normal side on photos I have added a few vents and panels.

post-17057-0-24175400-1459765512_thumb.jpg

Finally I could start the cycle of undercoat > fill > sand > undercoat.....

post-17057-0-24035400-1459765513_thumb.jpg

I started with Halfords grey undercoat then have been using Halfords White for the last couple of coats - hopefully this should help when spraying the NR Yellow!

I wasn't happy with the roof exhaust grills I had added as they just looked like bits of fine mesh glued to the roof (which in fairness, is exactly what they are). To finish them off I have added some fine styrene square section.

Before:

After:

Finally a shot of the front of 9703

post-17057-0-63112600-1459765515_thumb.jpg

That brings you up to date. Time to break out the Yellow!

Hi Sam

Just popped in for a catch up. Superb job with the NR coaches and DBSO. I must say though I do like the IVRS radio aerial. They are such a common sight now on the network and yours looks spot on. Great work.

Cheers

Marcus

Thanks Marcus. I'm pleased with the aerial, as you say they're everywhere on scraps of land and more importantly it was the right size to fill the space I had! Enjoying watching your progress on PDW!

Cheers

Thanks Neil & John.

Looking really good. The NR stock looks great and I'm tempted more than ever now to have a go!
Thanks for posting the stages you have worked through as its a great help for others too.

Cheers,
John

Glad the step by step photos are of some help! They are fairly easy conversions, just a bit time consuming.

Thanks for commenting!

This week I have mainly been...... watching paint dry:

post-17057-0-23546200-1460965585_thumb.jpg

Yellow sides masked whilst the grey roof was sprayed.

post-17057-0-13895100-1460965586_thumb.jpg

Then re-mask to spray the black ends.

I used BR Exec Dark grey for the roofs - not sure if it is too dark..... Any thoughts?

Cheers

Afternoon

Work on the NR test coaches has been focused on the under frames. A pair of Xuron cutters, scaple, sanding sticks, superglue and a load of random pieces of styrene and they are starting to look the part.

Firstly 9703 - (With the help of the excellent article in BRM October 2014)

post-17057-0-85331500-1462460775_thumb.jpg

New flat bufferbeam

post-17057-0-96332800-1462460776_thumb.jpg

New snowplough (needs trimming a bit!)

post-17057-0-59707300-1462460837_thumb.jpg

New underframe tanks and a new fan

Next 999602 and 6262

Extra tanks and steps

post-17057-0-91829400-1462460836_thumb.jpg

Finally for today, a couple of shots of the bodies posed on the underframes

post-17057-0-93309700-1462460773_thumb.jpg

Slowly getting there but still need to:

 - Paint bogies & underframes

 - Sort glazing

 - Install lighting and decoder into 9703

 - Transfers and cantrail strip - Waiting for Steve at Railtec to hopefully pull together a set a transfers for me

 - Add door handles and hand rails

 - Add coach end cables

Might have them finished by Christmas!

Cheers
