LongRail
Sam, photo of tankers I simply allowed the modelmates liquid to run down several coats and then weathered over the top. A little gloss varnish (Acrylic) was then brushed over the top in small areas to indicate recent oil spillage with regards to the hard standing area it was all applied in one go

sdw7300
Made a start on the fuel unloading/loading terminal last night. It's based very much on the facility at Westerleigh. Firstly I drew the design up on a sheet of A3 paper at 50% scale then blew it up 200% on a photocopier. This was then taped together and work on the roof commenced. Once this had set the roof was flipped on it's side a set of legs added Then on it's back for the other legs A quick test once the glue had dried It still needs the cross bracing to add more strength and the handrails which hang above the wagons. I'm really enjoying building this!

sdw7300
Thank you for all the likes/craftsmanships on the oil loading terminal gantry post - very humbled to receive so many! I would love to say there has been more progress but the wrong ABS lengths were sent from China and the right one have only just been dispatched so it will be another few weeks before they arrive. However I managed to pick up some Modelmates Brown Oil, as recommended by Gary (Long Rail). I'm rather pleased with the results: I've also been working on something for above the layout.... All will be revealed once I've finished painting it! Thanks for dropping by......
sdw7300
Whilst waiting on more plastic for the fuel loading point to arrive, I have been working on the auto uncoupling system. I have installed several magnets in between sleepers on the layout and slowly adding staples to some of my stock. I have improved my four Lima TEA's by cutting off the HUGE coupling and adding a smaller Bachmann coupling. Not only does this improve the look but also means I can use the Brian Kirby system on the tanks. TEA Bogies: (The white bits of plasticard have since been painted black and look a lot better!) The staples will be blackened with a Sharpie to tone them down. I had a TTA which was missing and couplings so a couple of Parkside Dundas NEM mounting blocks were added. That's all for now Cheers Edited October 12, 2015 by sdw7300

sdw7300
So it turns out I forgot to check the height of the couplings when I mounted the NEM boxes on the TEA bogies...... and they are a good couple of MM too low Every time I had 5 mins over the last couple of days I have been snapping off the NEM boxes and reattaching them at the right height with the help of a jig. In other news I have finished something for above the layout. I got in contact with Tim Horn (www.timhorn.co.uk) and within a couple of days a laser cut 3mm MDF sign had been delivered. I have painted all the bits seperately using some undercoat I had lying around and a couple of coats of 151 Coatings Pillar Box Red and Metallic Silver. Glued together with Impact Adhesive I'm well chuffed with the result. Just need to work out how to mount it to the wall above the layout now....
sdw7300
Flying visit today but I wanted to share progress on the fuel terminal. Ready for priming now! This has taken about 10 hours to get to this stage but I have really enjoyed it. Chuffed to bits with the result. Thanks for dropping by.

sdw7300
Hi There Thank you for all the "likes" & "craftsmanship" - I'm quite humbled so many people like what like doing ;-) Anyway a bit of a catch up post..... Firstly the layout name board is now mounted above the layout. (Kudos for the first person to recognise the two layouts in the reference photos!) As you can see from my previous post I added the angle iron bracing and guard rails to the fuel gantry. The guard rails are 1.4mm galvanised gardening wire straightened by clamping one end in the vice and spinning the other end with a drill whilst pulling taut. To make the hangers I hammered a small section flat so it would bend neatly round the guard rail. The hangers were glued to a piece of 3mm angle before being glued to the gantry. As the sun was shinning yesterday, the gantry (and some pipework & fencing) had a coat of primer. I have been working on the oil terminal pipework and made a bund for the tanks. There is not a massive amount of room behind the sidings so fitting the tanks in is a bit of a squeeze. Photos to follow when I've made a bit more progress. And finally last nights work was to knock up a pump house. That's all for now. Any comments / thoughts / suggestions are gladly received. Cheers
sdw7300
Evening folks. Had a bit of a mock up of the fuel terminal to get an idea of what it will look like. Excuse all the wonky fences & buildings, everything is just plonked in place. Any thoughts or comments are more than welcome! LongRail
Looking good the palisade fence would be galvanised and silver colour can't recall ever seeing palisade in black

sdw7300
Looking good the palisade fence would be galvanised and silver colour can't recall ever seeing palisade in black Thanks Gary. The fencing (and fuel gantry) has just had a coat of primer. I was hoping this would do but the primer from Poundland is quite a dark gray. I was in two minds about, but I think you're right; it needs to go light gray. Llanbourne is full of brilliant detailing. The other photo is Oulton TMD - another fantastic layout. Thanks for your comments on the gantry. It took ages but I really enjoyed making it. Hopefully the pipe work will get finished this week.....
Marcus 37
Hi Sam Apologies for not finding your layout sooner. Went on the link at the bottom of your post on PDW. Great layout with some lovely modelling. I do like the gantry for the fuel terminal. definitely deserving of the craftsmanship / clever button. Shall be following along with interest now. Cheers Marcus.

sdw7300
Thanks Lee - great to have you on board. Slow progress over the last couple of week - apparently our side passage / utility room needed re-arranging and decorating. I'm about a quarter of the way through that..... I have managed to sneak the odd hours or so in the garage. The fuel gantry and security fencing is now light grey - looks much better. The fuel pipework is made up and this, along with the oil tanks, have had coat of paint. Photo's to follow once it is all in place. I have also been working on the pump house. I tried several method of painting the brickwork until I finally got a result I was happy with. I have added some pipes/pumps in the interior & a light so it's visible! Last might I added a door and the glazing. I was really chuffed until I looked at the cruel close up photos! (I will rehang that door!) Cheers Edited November 20, 2015 by sdw7300
D9JEF
Sam, I personally would leave the door as is. I have seen many a door like that and it adds a bit of character. You could add a joiner just in front looking at it as a bit of a cameo. Keep up the good work Jeff

sdw7300
Hello there Had a good day out at Warley on Saturday. Managed to resist buying any loco's or wagons (but did have a good look at the Dapol class 68's as I have one on pre-order.... the production sample looked excellent). However I did make one notable purchase - Iwata Neo CN airbrush. [Appears I can't add photos in the body of this reply...] So Saturday night I had a play and went on a bit of a weathering mission! The track is a mixture of sleeper grime and frame dirt over the whole of the track and then a roof dirt & matt black mixture along the centre. The tanks, pump-house, portakabin & factory have had a waft of the roof dirt & matt back mixture. Next - time for some greenery before adding some fencing.....
