pointstaken
Agreed - gives you chills when you see some of the photos. 1000ft up and no safety harness - no thanks, strictly terra firma me. Dennis
BG John
Only 5 died!!!! If that's the only job I'd been offered in the depression, I'd have died of starvation rather than go up there!
Simon G
As a Health & Safety professional, I just cringed when I saw these! For building like that, only 5 being killed was probably a good safety performance in those days.
shortliner
I believe that many of the original guys doing the steelwork were, and still are on modern skyscrapers, like the new Twin Towers building, indigenous North American Indians - not something that I could cope with - my Acrophobia wouldn't let me! Here is a timelapse video of the new Twin Towers going up

RMweb Premium newbryford Posted September 23, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2013 I think we've had this one before awhile ago. 1700ft up a communication tower without using a safety line (apart from a regular rest). Apparently it's done like this because a safety line creates more of a hazard getting in the way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlZfCSn3qqk Cheers, Mick
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted September 23, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 23, 2013 The first structure to be built in the USA using safety nets etc. was the Golden Gate bridge. Lives were lost however when a special cradle collapsed. Up until then there were no fatalities.
