Waiting for a Train - Painted Model Railway Figures by The Purple Primer

I have recently been refining a different painting style for my 7mm figures.

I was using a similar style for these as the one I was using on my 4mm figures and I wasn't completely convinced it suited 7mm figures as well.

It has taken quite a bit of experimentation to get this to where I want - thank heavens you can easily strip metal figures off and try again. I like to refer to these figures as 'Splash Test Dummies'.

I have a few refinements to try but this is the direction I am now heading in for 7mm. The basic technique is using artists inks.

I wanted to desaturate the colours without losing all the contrast. what I have aimed for is the colour depth that we are used to seeing in older colour photographs and then knocking that back even further to demonstrate the change of colours when seen at a distance - scale colouration of you like.

This smaller picture might give some idea ( depends on your screen ) how it could look on a layout

An Interesting one this one.

A customer wanted a repaint of a figure he already owned. The figure had lost a hand somewhere down the line and he had an idea in his head of what the figure should look like - slightly thinner up top and no mustache. I am really busy at the moment and didn't really have the time to take a job on like that so of course I said "Yes"

Here is what arrived in the post - seen much worse than this but I stripped him anyway and got cracking.

Typically I didn't have a spare left hand in my bits box and Burke and Hare are on their holidays so I had to make one

Here he is - so if you have a figure that you wished looked a bit brighter all isn't lost - I am sure I can freshen them up for you.

Hi Richard

Ok - getting a flat finish with a brush is really difficult I am afraid. The first thing is that the varnish needs to be really well mixed. I mix mine by putting a few glass beads in the bottle and shake it really well. I shake for 2 minutes - let it sit for 5 minutes and then shake again for another minute.

Two thin coats will work much better than one - resist the temptation to thin with water as this will often cause the flatting agent to pool and that will give you white spots or specks.

So two thin coats - just brush it out to get a thin coat. At least 24 hours between coats.

If the humidity is high I would suggest waiting for better conditions ( I always bung my de humidifier on or my aircon on when I am varnishing )

Let us know how you get on

This lot are part of a larger commission of 4mm figures

The customer has some buses and a trolley bus ( or trams ? ) on his layout and wanted some figures to go with them. The crew were easy enough but he also wanted to show the electrical pickup being refitted to the wires for the trolley bus. He gave me the dimensions from the ground ( a platform in this case ) and I converted a few figures for him.

Painting the bamboo was fun in this scale ( 1/76 )

I often paint figures that are sent to my by the customer and often its easy to quote via email or over the phone. Sometimes doing that will catch you out

This is a 4mm figure

Fiddly Fiddly Fiddly - Bad Cat !

Pleased with how this came out - I have painted him as our cat Freddy ( known to his friends and 'Gingy Puss' )

I know what you are thinking ... " doesn't look too tricky "

One of my customers is building a layout based in period just before D-Day

Did these for him recently - 4mm scale 1/76

Some Auxiliary Drivers and a bunch of squaddies washing, shaving etc.

These are resin figures - hard to work with but came out well I think ...

I bet the bloke fourth from the left got nervous when he saw an enormous paintbrush coming towards him! :jester:

Seriously, though, very impressive work - I wish my hand were so steady as yours appears to be!

You clearly did under-quote if that's the full payment. A lovely job though.
