JeffP's photos, early 70's and 80's.

Recommended Posts

Jeff,

The Escort photos may be off topic, but as a former Escort owner myself, very interesting.  I went through a series of Fords, starting with an Anglia 105E, various Escorts (Mks 1, 2 & 3) and ending with a Mondeo.  The latter was the most unreliable car I ever owned, so I then switched brands like you.

Back on topic, keep the railway photos coming as most are of areas I do not know.  Thanks for taking the time to scan and post.

My first car was a mk3 Escort..... It didn't even make it home from the garage... Oil pump went, and warning light didn't work.... One replacement engine later....... I moved on to Renaults and never looked back!!!!

I went from a Mkll Escort to a Mkl as my first cars. Absolutely superb motors! Sadly, neither were the sporty versions.

To say I was amazed that the lady who bought my perfectly sound Mkl sent it to a scrap yard, well, words failed me at the time when I saw my old Blue bonnet travelling round on a White Escort! Such a waste of a perfectly good motor!

Anywho, cracking pictures Jeff.

Cheers.

Sean.

They're both Sealions - the Seacow was the welded variant and I think they were all delivered in the yellow/grey paint scheme.

The Seacow was air-braked only, but with vacuum pipes, so wouldn't have had the very prominent vacuum cylinders on the two wagons shown. They had a different design of bogie as well- the Y27.

The safety cages over the operator's platform were fitted to the Seacows from new, but most Sealions were retrofitted.

Thanks...I looked up YGH and it gave both.....

An hour or so at Althorpe station tonight, circa 1980.

post-13196-0-37264800-1395434226_thumb.jpg

Class 20, running light engine, 20118 is returning eastbound. Quite a rare shot. Apart from ONE that used to outstation at Barnetby, and was occasioanlly used at the bottom of the Gunhouse bank as a banker, they almost always ran in pairs hereabouts.

post-13196-0-37588300-1395434235_thumb.jpg

The evening sun silhouettes a class 31 returning east with steel empties.

post-13196-0-04925900-1395434243_thumb.jpg

Class 47, which is I think 47350, has a yellow light as it is about to tackle Gunhouse bank.

post-13196-0-26151800-1395434254_thumb.jpg

Class 37 on a mixed freight, takes the curve into Althorpe station before crossing the River Trent.

post-13196-0-96101900-1395434259_thumb.jpg

The same train has now passed the photographer, I believe the loco to be 37021. It, too, only has a yellow for the bank.

Deltics at Doncaster tonight. Around 1982?

post-13196-0-51104100-1395515677_thumb.jpg

Photographed from the top of the multi-storey at Doncaster, class 55 "Deltic", 55015, "Tulyar" leaves for the north with an express passenger train.

post-13196-0-72058500-1395515684_thumb.jpg

And next northbound service is 55009, "Alycidon".

post-13196-0-83318600-1395515693_thumb.jpg

From St James' Bridge, class 55 "Deltic", 55003, "Meld" threads through the pointwork south of Doncaster station with an express for Kings Cross. Another of it's class is parked awaiting entry to the works.

post-13196-0-45317400-1395515700_thumb.jpg

Looking ex-works, 55013, "The Black watch" is photographed on Doncaster Works.

post-13196-0-31122500-1395515709_thumb.jpg

A better shot of 55013, with the Crimpsall erecting shops behind it. They were named after an area of the marsh beside the River Don, cleared to build the works.

post-13196-0-79546300-1395515720_thumb.jpg

Class 55, "Deltic" 55003, "Meld" again heading south.

post-13196-0-29603600-1395515730_thumb.jpg

And last Deltic for tonight, 55007, "Pinza" is also heading south.

Strange to note that on this day, all the Deltics I saw were from the first original named batch..even 55013 was an early namer, the others being named almost from the off, being 1, 3, 7, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 20. By this time, 1 and 20 had been withdrawn as early casualties, meaning I only "needed" 12 and 18 that day for a set.

post-13196-0-53412400-1395515739_thumb.jpg

The obligatory visit to the Kirk Street works entrance produced class 37 37129, with what appears to be a silver, or white roof.

Anyway back on topic

The 47 pics are giving me inspiration to model some specific 47s and base the deatails and weathering on your pics.

(I remember seeing County of Hertfordshire and Essex alot)

As ever, the background details are also fascinating - in the last photo of the Deltic above are the "little yellow tractors" that appeared in my notebooks around that time - I believe they were exported via Sheerness (or possibly Queenborough, or Ridham Dock), or at least they came through N Kent on a regular basis, using the SAA 400xxx series wagons. Where were they built though?

Southernblue80's: nice, it looks like a version 5?

eastwestdivide: as far as I'm aware, they were made at the international harvester plant at Doncaster, which used to be rail-served, sadly now closed and derelict.

Only a few tonight, from various places.

post-13196-0-82575100-1395607234_thumb.jpg

We start with an early HST at Doncaster, unit number 254025 is awaiting the road to the north, one evening circa 1980.

post-13196-0-52403900-1395607241_thumb.jpg

Evening Star on the Scarborough Spa Express.

post-13196-0-17315100-1395607251_thumb.jpg

Class 02, D2860, preserved at the NRM.

post-13196-0-61793200-1395607261_thumb.jpg

Class 33, 33112 on arrival at Waterloo.

post-13196-0-06577600-1395607523_thumb.jpg

Worksplate of, I think a class 73, Waterloo. I am reliably informed it's on 73141...thanks Flamingo

post-13196-0-24431000-1395607268_thumb.jpg

Waterloo, with classes 33, 73 and 403 awaiting departure.

Sorry there are so few tonight, they don't fit in with what comes next.

More cracking pics Jeff - but as for that UID 37

The same train has now passed the photographer, I believe the loco to be 37021. It, too, only has a yellow for the bank.

Wouldn't be 37021 - that was a split boxer - see http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5150/5662448361_c4d0b5d1a4_z.jpg

Your loco is a centre boxer with roof mounted horns - 37201 perhaps?

Cheers

Phil

Thanks.

Tonight's few are some of my earliest photos. Sadly, the negatives are lost, and they were originally printed on what was called "silk" paper...slightly rough to the touch. It didn't take fingerprints, but the pattern can be discerned on the copies. Sorry.

post-13196-0-68710700-1395694975_thumb.jpg

Class 55 Deltic, Which I believe to be 9012, "Crepello", races north with the 1300 Kings Cross - Edinburgh, 1S14, on a sunny afternoon in June 1972. Ranskill

post-13196-0-02581200-1395694991_thumb.jpg

About ten minutes later a class 46 storms north with a service to Newcastle.

post-13196-0-60157100-1395694999_thumb.jpg

And closely following that, class 47 still in two-tone green races south with a service to Kings Cross from Leeds. The loco could be D1855.

The above three photos are now all but impossible with the wires and the embankments very overgrown at that spot.

post-13196-0-98341800-1395695013_thumb.jpg

Briostol Bath Road depot, from the platforms at Temple Meads, and a class 52 moves off the shed with a class 47. Circa 1972.

post-13196-0-71837500-1395695026_thumb.jpg

This one is at Scorrier, near Redruth, with a Western diesel sporting a 4A39 headcode, heading west with a passenger working for Penzance. May 1974.

Sadly, the prints aren't clear enough to read loco numbers and my notes from then don't survive.

From one end of the country to the other, tonight.

post-13196-0-89756300-1395782710_thumb.jpg

A damp day at Eastfield, with class 27's and a class 47 parked outside. One of the 27's looks like it's having a boiler test? Circa 1980.

post-13196-0-17101400-1395782720_thumb.jpg

And by the time we got to Polmadie, the sun was shining again...line up of shunters outside the repair shed, including a class 06....by this time they were becoming rare.

post-13196-0-89579300-1395782727_thumb.jpg

A better view of class 06, 06007 at Polmadie.

post-13196-0-42920000-1395783050_thumb.jpg

Motherwell depot, with 37237 nearest the camera.

post-13196-0-22771900-1395782737_thumb.jpg

Long shot of the depot at Motherwell, there would appear to be a rake of container flats in for repair.

post-13196-0-47571300-1395782753_thumb.jpg

Long shot of Wigan (Springs Branch) depot, with the long suffering wife in the foreground, her hair would indicate it was a windy day.

post-13196-0-17265700-1395782768_thumb.jpg

Class 25, 25326 at Wigan (Springs Branch).

post-13196-0-29219900-1395782782_thumb.jpg

And this is the rear of Eastleigh depot, another Merrymaker trip, this time to Bournemouth, and we went back to Eastleigh.

post-13196-0-85453500-1395782793_thumb.jpg

Class 33, 33105, in excellent external condition, with a parcels train at Bournemouth.

You are lucky, she must be very tolerant. I'm sure mine would have refused to get out of the car - or even refused to get in in the first place!

Looks like the Polmadie shunter line up as 2

06 shunters in the line up.

Yes, it does, you are right.

We used to go to other places and "detour" to a nearby shed. Difficult sheds could be accessed by the application of pretty blonde asking for us both....
