RMweb Gold geoff Posted August 27, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 27, 2014 (edited) An interesting and novel composition nonetheless. How long did you have to wait for that coincidence of two trains visible between the structures, or did you just get lucky? Thank you for your kind words Edwin. I just got lucky. I had set out to see the 07:35 Hope (Earle Sidings) Fhh to Theale Lafarge Fhh working which was coming down the Manton Line and then the 09:31 Radlett Redland Roadstone to Mountsorrel Sdgs working which would be on the main line through Leicester. They were due to pass the junction 9 minutes apart. The Hope - Theale working was a minute early and I was a minute late, I must walk faster, so I only saw the tail of the Hope train disappearing around the curve. I could see the down Meridian approaching but then heard the up train coming behind me so I just aimed and clicked, I didn't really think about the 'off railway' scene. My photo of the, on time, Radlett train is on the 66 thread and is, I hope, a better composition. I just wish that the downsizing of the pictures to post them here didn't degrade them so much. The two Meridians are a 7.9 Mb picture on my computer and much sharper. RMweb Gold geoff Posted August 28, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 28, 2014 Interesting comparison to my (poor) photo in Peak days here: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/29471-passing-trains/?p=391539 I don't think it is a poor photo at all. The experts may point to specific issues but the important point is that it is a record of the line at that moment. The pictures we take today are tomorrow's history and we need to record as much as we can. When it is gone, it is gone and memories do not last unfailingly for ever. With the threat / promise of electrification of the Midland Mainline I set out to try to record the over bridges around Kettering before they are replaced or altered to accommodate the wires. Similarly there is talk of re-instating the double track between Kettering and Corby and so I keep an eye on things there as far as I can. All these pictures are valuable records. Thank you for posting it and the link to it. Geoff
eastwestdivide
...and thanks for recording the line just before electrification. Last few times I've travelled it this year, there have been a lot of footbridge components lying around ready for installation, as well as some already installed. Sharnbrook and Market Harborough areas in particular I think?
RMweb Gold geoff Posted August 29, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 29, 2014 (edited) The Manton line just north of the former Glendon South Junction, do the barriers signify a start on the re-doubling between Kettering and Corby? Does anyone have any info on this? Geoff IMG_0053.jpg Looking south from the Glendon Iron Coy’s bridge. 23 August 2014. IMG_0051.jpg Looking north from the Glendon Iron Coy’s bridge. 23 August 2014. Peter Kazmierczak
A trip down memory lane..... Those who visited a Derby Loco Works Open Day will remember this slope. Most would enter the works from Siddals Road (those long queues), under the Five Arches, then past the bike sheds and turn right up the slope. There'd be usually a lot of stands here selling metal loco badges (remember them), railway books/magazines and stalls for preservation societies. The difference in levels between the Top and Bottom Yards was about 8ft. Edited September 5, 2014 by Western Sunset
Poor Old Bruce
I used to man the stand flogging enamel badges as well as the miniature railway with all the proceeds going to St. Christopher's Railway Orphanage. That meant we got in early to set up and could get pictures of the main exhibits before the hoardes descended. Edit: No.1 Shop to the right of the picture is one of the few remains of 'Derby Loco'. It is now part of the Derby College Campus and adjoins the historic Roundhouse which will be the venue for the 2015 Derby Model Railway Exhibition in May. Peter Kazmierczak
Haven't posted on this thread for awhile, so here's a view from one of my favourite locations. We are at Deep Dale Bridge, near Barrow upon Trent on the Stenson - Sheet Stores freight line. A pair of Immingham Class 31s head home with empty oil tanks for one of the South Humberside refineries. Whilst both are in Railfreight Grey, the leading one looks to be a slightly lighter shade, or maybe it's just the strong autumn light.
Peter Kazmierczak
As the shadows lengthen on the same day, a Class 37 ambles past with empty HEAs and HAAs - possibly from Garston as there was a flow of export coal during this period - late 1980s.
rd84
PinzaC55's photos of Whitwick station reminded me of a trip tp Coalville in 1963 to seek out the last Midalnd 2F 0-6-0s as we afterwards walked along that line to Shepshed. Somewhere (safe?) is a photo I took of Whitwick station from the track side but don't hold your breath waiting for me to post it (sorry). To make up for that, here are the photos I took of the 2Fs: Hi, Nice photo's. I've been researching the Charnwood Forest Railway for many years - I see you mention photo's of Whitwick - I wondered if you had taken photo's on your walk to Shepshed ? Cheers Paul

Cheers Paul I think I also took a photo of Coalville's other station at the time (remember it was over 50 years ago (heck!!!)) but, although the photos are still about somewhere, I haven't seen them for ages.

eastwestdivide
Derby Station some 35 years ago - pouring with rain and precious little shelter from some of the removed canopies on platform 2. Could almost reuse your captions for these of mine... those canopies were really horrible. More gloom at Derby from the same period. Must have been a dingy day, as even the DMU lights show up on the photo: This one with enough snow to make it miserable, but not enough to make it picturesque. More wisps of steam, and a reminder that opening-window Mk2s could be steam heated:

There's not much shelter from the new ones either! Also I understand they don't have enough clearance for overhead wires, so will need to be modified
Flood
Seeing as we are at Derby I thought I'd post this blast from the past: The date is December 1985, the right hand side of the W H Smiths stand (along with the car hire kiosk) had already been blocked off. Looks like there might be some good old '80s Goths/Rockers going to Rock City in Nottingham.

Flood
I presume the maintenance costs were getting high and that the original building just wasn't fit for purpose ( i.e. shove as many people through a concourse as you can). I should have posted this photo along with the other one: March 1984 before any of the reworking began. Edited December 7, 2014 by Flood
Peter Kazmierczak
A gloomy May day at Toton in 1980, as 45103 heads the late evening Nottingham - Glasgow Freightliner. Note the humble wooden fence serving as the only lineside fencing by the approach road to the diesel depot, bottom right.
