Forget the humble fencing in the foreground, I'm looking at the lines of 16, 21 and 24 tonners in the background. You could fill the next 20 pages with photos of Toton or non-mgr coal traffic from 1979/1980 as far as I'm concerned.

OK, coal it is then. May 83, and a couple of relatively unusual classes at Leicester, 40099 on the goods lines and 37072 on the main lines:

(Edit - possibly the same day - the parcel vans in the siding appear to be the same, and the negs were consecutive).

Slightly earlier, and a poor shot of a 25 on coal empties, I think with a fair few 24 tonners:

A couple of years earlier and I'd have shots of the final days of the 44s, which worked Toton-Three Spires (Coventry) coal in 21t hoppers (HTV). I saw a couple, but no photos (at least that I can find).

Have we done Market Harborough yet? April 83:

Showing the bridge from which the previous shot was taken:

The junction with the closed line to Northampton (must have been quick putting that signal back)

A warm, sunny afternoon at Ratcliffe in May 1978. We are just south of the site of the present East Midlands Parkway Station and here comes a Class 44 plodding along the Up Goods. Might be vacuum-fitted tube wagons in the train consist, but not sure.

The engine shows a rather optimistic "express passenger" headcode, but of course by this date these discs weren't used for their original purpose.

Chaddesden Wagon Shops whilst still in use to repair wagons. Looks like a new door has been made for the bay on the left and awaits painting.

Is that a nuclear flask wagon outside the building? Lots of withdrawn PMVs in the left distance, converted from former Blue Spot fish vans.

Back to Toton finds a green Class 20 on a rake of hoppers joining the 2nd Down Goods line from Meadow Sidings.

Toton still has its original lighting columns in the background and as the loco doesn't display an individual train reporting number, the picture must date from around 1977/78.

The Army Red Cross vans on the wagons are probably in transit to or from Chilwell MOD.

Whilst no longer a full-blown marshalling yard, Chaddesden Sidings near Derby was still used for wagon storage into the early 1980s. Here we see a group of largely unfitted wagons awaiting their fate.

This is all built over now, as part of Pride Park.

Over on the right, what's this wagon, sheeted over with a round top?

Is the building attached to the workshop (offices?) the one bit that still stands as a fireplace showroom? Certainly looks like it

I would say so, the new A52 at the rear.

Mike.

I wonder if it's some sort of Transformer wagon, rather than a Flask?

I'm just glad that there isn't a "drool" emoticon anymore.

This thread would be getting very slimy by now.

Titan: The 20 will be green with full yellow ends, Toton still had fifteen 20s in green in June 1979.

That is all that is left of the workshops after a massive blaze in the early 90's (?) destroyed all of the repair workshops leaving only the building on the right surviving. There is currently an application in for demolition of this building and the construction of a new Marks and Spencer food outlet See here http://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/New-Derby-Marks-Spencer-store-risk-rail-building/story-22758958-detail/story.html

Peter. Was your picture taken from the then new footbridge?

Peter K's picture looks from the early 80's when the A52 extension was built over parts of the old Derby Canal. but thats another story .............................

Stapleford & Sandiacre signalbox dates from September 1949; I wonder if the maroon end nameboard is the original? If so it'll have seen Beyer-Garratts, LMS 8Fs and all of the smaller freight classes, plus BR 9Fs etc etc.

The Midland Line HST from Sheffield to St Pancras (via Nottm) has been diverted from its usual route because Trowell Junction was out of commission due to a MGR train derailment. The Up Goods line has a slight coating of rust so this photo might well have been taken around the Christmas period.
