37114
Hi Rob, Love the latest pics, the upper level works really well, and the backscene looks spot on. Cheers Peter. Thanks Peter, in the future I am looking forward to recreating one of your photos of Temple Meads of a split box class 45 and a class 47 at the end of the platform. Rivercider
Sourcing of the figures is somewhat a detective challenge, Bachmann do some lovely bang up to date figures such as workman etc plastered in Orange HV clothing but there seems to be a dearth of anything in between 1960's and now. The Presier range do some nice figures which can suit, and the Punks on Pallet Lane got many mentions/smiles over the years. I don't think I photographed it but Dave gave me a white metal figure that looks to be a 1970's driver (complete with BR badge on the Hat!) that he bought in error and is too late for his layout, frustratingly I have no idea who produced it. Thanks Rob Impressive work so far, and I like the cameos. I don't think you will need too many people for the lower yard area. I remember Avon Street as being quite busy with road traffic passing through, but not many pedestrians. Like many areas of city centre industrial decay it was probably not somewhere you visited unless you had business there! cheers

I agree about the area not being the sort of place to walk through, that is part of the modelling attraction. Interesting that you say there was a fair bit of road traffic, I will probably add a car waiting at the level crossing, I also have the Sherpa van seen on page 2 of this thread

But Avon Street forms a useful link beween Temple Way and Feeder Road so it was not deserted either. I seem to remember that in the 1980s the bridge got struck by road vehicles on a number of occasions, waste skip lorries I think were often culprits, in my photo of 08949 on the crossing in 1983 there is a Ford Escort waiting nearside, and what appear to be a car, a van, and a skip lorry far side, cheers

Wayne 37901
Hi Rob, Peafore Yard seems to be coming along nicely. I'm planning a project myself based around the Bristol area and moving back in time away from my usual sectorisation era modelling to good old Rail Blue, I've already acquired a few items of stock for it. Sorry if I've missed it but what is the size of Peafore Yard? Cheers
37114
Hi Wayne. Good luck with the new project, please post some pics as you progress. The main board of Peafore Yard is just under 4' x 2', the fiddle yard is a further 3' long.

37114
So when will the layout be ready to make its exhibition debut? Geoff Endacott Hi Geoff, Probably about 5 minutes before the Cheltenham show opens on the 11th April next year, although it is likely the upper level won't be finished. It will be completely finished by the end of July as I have another show booked for then.
Geoff Endacott
So it will not be ready for the Calne Show next year then? Geoff Endacott
37114
So it will not be ready for the Calne Show next year then? Geoff Endacott Sorry Geoff, time is a bit tight between now and then to do the things I would want o before it went in to a show, it also coincides with Julie's Birthday and already have made plans, Chippenham next year would be possible assuming it is still 1 day show? Popular Post 37114
Thanks for all of the Likes/ feedback on the posts so far, it is much appreciated. Some years ago I kit bashed/ scratchbuilt 3 Motorail wagons intended for a layout I never built, They were all built at the same time as opposed to one after the other as I doubt I would have got beyond 1 if I knew how much work would be involved. I was recently approached by one of the magazines to provide some photos of them for a forthcoming magazine article so used Peafore Yard as a backdrop although it is not ideal for such long wagons. I have shared a few photos that didn't make the cut. Dave and I had our semi regular "Beer and Modelling" evening on Wednesday night, he cracked on with some more work on the foliage while I made a start on the chain link fence, a job I particularly detest due to the difficulty getting a straight edge on the Ratio mesh. I have tried a number of approaches over the year but have settled on gluing the mesh to the posts one at a time, while holding the mesh taught. I also have made a diesel pump from plastic section, the delivery gauge being cut out of a photo of a real pump I have also dug out a couple more road vehicles kept back from Pallet Lane, including the 8 wheel cement tanker to go with the 6 wheeler made earlier this year. The yellow crewbus also in the photos was made from a Jon Hall casting before the BT model version came out but I have a later Leyland Terrier version that will be used when the layout is finished, it is awaiting a roof repaint prior to being put in place. Also to appear will be the multicolour Morris Minor, complete with coat hanger radio aerial. My wife had a good look over the layout tonight and was forthcoming not only with positive comments but also some areas for improvement which I find refreshing and most of her comments will be acted on. I think it is very easy to be blind to some details when working on a project intensively so a fresh pair of eyes is always welcome.
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted November 28, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 28, 2014 Very nice, the motorail flats look especially good! How about a closeup of the Moggie with the coathanger aerial? Do you intend to extend the backscene images onto the 'sides' of the layout as well? It seems to end rather abruptly at the moment....
37114
Hi Rich, I will dig the Morris Minor out of the box again tomorrow for some photos, unfortunately I am having to pack the layout away each evening due to the garage being full of a 12":1' scale model from 1977 - my Land Rover The backscene will extend round to the side in some shape or form (my wife pointed out the same), I will frame the left hand end with a signal gantry to hide the exit. The right hand side will blend in with the station building/canopy when built. One of my lessons learnt from this layout is to thing about the backscenes more at the planning stage, out of preference I would go for low relief buildings as opposed to pictures due to the work required to find the right size picture, taken at the right angle. angell328
Hi Rob, Just had an enjoyable hour reading through the thread, all I can say is wow! Such atmosphere. As I read through I did wonder where the Landrover would be, and there she is at the bottom of the pile! I hope with the release of Oxford diecasts Series 2's that one may appear in one piece somewhere I shall be giving the garage over to the Landy myself for next few months as I finally get the new chassis under her, so I have recieved permission to have a small plank that I can construct in the house. I also got some C&L track and point kits, so reading through your build thread has given some good pointers. Looking forward to seeing you and the layout in April. Cheers Matt

Cheers Matt Hi Matt, I found the model I made of my series 3 the other day when retrieving Xmas decorations from the loft so that may appear, I went to the trouble of making all of the gear levers from Peco track pins and painted the knobs the right colours! Good luck with the new layout,Look forward to meeting up in April.

Thanks Peter, hopefully they will get a bit of use on the upper level from time to time. I am surprised that Motorail flats haven't been announced as an RTR model, Bachmann have 80% of the required parts already, they were widely spread across the country with plenty of opportunity to sell more than 1 per person. Maybe next year...

Rivercider
Hi Rob this just keeps getting better and better. I like the Severn Beach single power car making an appearance. The signal gantry at the left hand end is a good idea. The Bristol East Gantry is an impressive structure and something like it could work well. There are also a number of brick built relay rooms that might be useful as scene blockers. Here is the East Gantry in 1983, the brick relay room on the right I think was part of the earlier Bristol East Signal Box. I am not sure if the trees were there in the 1970s though. 50007 Hercules passes under Bristol East Gantry with the 07.40 Penzance - Liverpool Lime Street, 20/9/83 cheers
60091
Hello Rob More excellent photos. I do like the car flats... always a good decision to batch build once you know you're going to need more than one! Can I assume they're built from redundant Mk1s? If they are - seeing yours made me wish I built a few, rather than parting with my old coaching stock for peanuts a few years ago. Without doing an internet search, I was wondering if the crewbus kit was still available? Cheers Alan

The Bubble car still retains the original wheel sets so can't run on the layout at the moment till I get my hands on some replacements. I also have a 3 car 117 which has the same problem, and have been mulling over getting shot and buying Dapol replacements.
