Another reminder that the MU fittings weren't always orange. While passing through Newton Abbot behind 46036 on 11th April 1974 I noted a Class 50 with a short number parked on the depot and at that time assumed it was there for crew training purposes. At a later date the notebook entry was annotated '405' so I probably picked this up from a magazine report. I remember thinking that it stood a good chance of being the last one to receive its TOPS number. The info contained in the MLI 193 on the Class confirms this - by the end of March 1974, 46 had been renumbered leaving 414/33 (50014/33 in April) and 413 (50013 in May) - but 405 didn't become 50005 until August. Maybe its Devon exile had something to do with that..... Interestingly earlier in that April trip I had my first taste of WR Class 50 haulage courtesy of 405's 'next-door neighbour' 50004 from Swindon to Bristol. 46036 took me from there to Plymouth and 47078 'Sir Daniel Gooch' on to Truro. Sigh. I miss those days......🙄 5

RMweb Gold CovDriver Posted July 24, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 24, 2022 (edited) A couple pics from this afternoon with 50007 and 049 running from Leicester as 0Z51to Coventry North Yard to stable overnight. The only reason I believe is because the GBRF driver lives in Coventry and I presume they'll be returning to Kidderminster SVR on Tuesday morning around 8am. eastwestdivide
50019 again, Paddington May 1983. Colour or mono? You decide. Think the mono would be improved by making the signal light stand out a bit better: Edited August 12, 2022 by eastwestdivide

RMweb Premium Grampus Posted August 26, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 26, 2022 Mighty 'Thunderer' at Barrow Hill this afternoon. The position of the loco and surroundings made for difficult photography, so I went for arty - the bright purple reflection from its nearside neighbour adds an interesting cast to the picture, but good to see her looking so good. Don't recall a Fifty ever looking quite that shiny back in the day! 🙂

rogerzilla
Not a fan of some of the current liveries, although they may be necessary on lease. Large Logo will always be the classic 50 livery for me.

Absolutely, large logo will always be the best livery for a class 50, hopefully we'll see it on one on the mainline at some point NL

No one seemed to know for sure but the assumption was that it had to do with leasing arrangements. Is anyone any the wiser on this matter?
Mark Saunders
Perhaps look at the Working Timetables and see if there is a difference in timing loads?
RMweb Gold daveyb Posted October 16, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 16, 2022 Possible, but they were supplied fitted for MU with blanking plates and D400 arrived with jumper cables fitted. Most other classes (all?) With the big MU fit have been supplied complete or had a complete retrofit. As Monty found lots of pics, I thought it pertinent to ask again
RMweb Premium keefer Posted October 16, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 16, 2022 Don't think there was ever a definite reason found as to why, just that all locos were wired for the jumpers/sockets and that they were subsequently fitted on depot.
