Deltic Class 55 Photos

Recommended Posts

Watching a Deltic pass was always an exhilarating experience especially when at full speed I always wondered how many crew ended up with bad hearing ,seeing them pass Hitchin was always good. They were a very distinctive class and its a pity designers dont think out of the box now and again but at least we have the preserved members of the class to look at thanks to the preservists.

On Monday 15 June 1964 I was in London, possibly on a work related visit. I ventured to Kings Cross station where I saw amongst other locos an immaculate Deltic Type 5 (later class 55) D9012 (55012) 'Crepello' standing at the platform on 1A46. There seemed to be a great deal of activity on the platform with many well dressed people in attendance as I took this photo.

It was only many years later that I found out that this was the first day of the summer timetable and that 1A46 was 'The Talisman' on its initial run with brand new XP64 stock behind it.

D9012 was built by English Electric at its Vulcan Foundry works (works number 2917/D569), released on 4 September 1961 and was initially allocated to Finsbury Park shed. It was also named on 4th September 1961 at Doncaster Works without ceremony (in honour of racehorse owned by Sir Victor Sassoon, won The Derby and 2,000 Guineas). It was renumbered 55012 in February 1974. It was withdrawn on 18th May 1981 from Finsbury Park shed  and cut up at Doncaster works during September 1981

I visited Kings Cross for the first time the previous month, and D9020 was the first Deltic I saw, looking exactly like this (oddly enough 🥴!!)

I'm surprised Doncaster didn't line the numbers up with the engine room windows above, but it looks like they went for equidistant with the BR logo from the cab doors instead.

Wow, that bug-unit is clean.

I don't ever recall seeing a reflection in one before!

Was Crepello FPs favourite? It always seemed to be put on the front of special workings such as these.

I always thought Nimbus was the favourite based on photos of special events, but then Crepello was also FPs choice for the inaugural northbound 'Silver Jubilee' so perhaps it was.

Deltics in the wild, sound quality is awful but often cine film is without sound so it's better than none at all.

Behind the bizarre interference, the sound is actually pretty good, with plenty of bass when Deltics pass by.  I wonder how much it could be improved.

Sorry to go O/T but the DMU also shows differing painting styles - one car has painted window surrounds while the furthest one has bare metal. IIRC it depended on which works did the repaint.
