Great pictures again David,  a bit of Marina envy going on at Allhallows.  A basic super or deluxe Marina coupe with a rather nice 1.8TC or GT next to it

Classic cars in your thread are almost as good as the traction!

Great pics David, We lived at Hoo, (Hoo St Werburgh) when I was about 4 to 9 years old and went to Allhallows a lot in the summer, and my Dad worked at BP after leaving the Admiralty at Chatham. Thanks for the memories.

Good evening, David. That’s a delightful selection of Great Eastern photo’s at Ingatestone, Marks Tey and Manningtree. In C2475, at Marks Tey, with the prototype emu for the class 313, in October, 1975, you have captured what is a rare sight for me. Thank you for posting this photograph.

The North Kent photo’s are a most excellent set, with C2596, of Allhallows station in the fog, by then a caravan park, in January, 1976, being a most atmospheric scene, complete with cars and a caravan. A sad reminder of hopes dashed in many ways.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

In the early 1950,s  we went on a boat trip from Southend to Allhallows and as we got towards the middle of the estuary the sea got rougher and had quite large waves ,the guy in charge said dont worry we are okay and coming back it will be smooth. The place when we arrived was empty of people it was raining and all there was on the beach was a tea van ,oh boy the boatman was shouted at and people were very upset. The return trip was smooth but all demanded their money back and vowed never to go to Allhallows again.

I just don't know how you do it David. Delightful photos day after day. Many thanks for all the effort you put into sorting and posting them.

Today's of Skipton reflect a long lost world, the one which was around when I was a teenager. Excellently composed and so full of atmosphere.

Just catching up on the last few days photos, C1098 on the Ffestiniog at Penrhyndeudraeth is 'Merddin Emrys'.

Earl of Merioneth was withdrawn in 1971, it was planned to scrap the superstructure and fit a new Hunslet boiler the same as we see on Merddin Emrys in your photo (new boiler 1970) but as it would mean losing the last traditional Fairlie outline loco a successful campaign led to the preservation of the old Earl as a static exhibit (now in the NRM York) and replacement with a new Earl of Merioneth (aka the Square) entering service in 1979.

This has come full circle, the 1979 loco has been withdrawn and is stored with no plans to return it to service, it's being replaced by new build James Spooner built to the traditional outline.

The name lives on in Cracker Court, Grain, beside the Hogarth pub, here on Google street view:

The Five Bells pub is still on Bells Lane, but in Hoo, not Grain (i.e. much nearer civilisation!):

Looks like quite a few people about to alight at Norton Bridge, bet they were pleased when it shut.

Interestingly, in its last year with trains as opposed to the replacement road transport which served it for a period between trains no longer calling and the station actually being legally closed, it had 2,080 passengers. One could perhaps argue that was due to a poor service which I had expected, except I was surprised to learn on looking at the Winter 2002-03 timetable that it had 9 calls each way Mon-Fri (7 Saturdays) on a two-hourly off-peak/hourly peak pattern. That means on average only about 1 in 3 trains calling there had a passenger to/from Norton Bridge. The timings were quite reasonable for commuting or leisure use as well.

Yes I know, I did mean Hoo, I lived in Knights Road, just off Bells Lane, a lovely little Village back in 59.

I think they wanted it gone so they could accelerate services - the location of the platform is now the fast lines from Crewe with the slow lines now part of the flyover realignment away from the the station as was.  Clearly not enough patronage to justify a new station.

Quite probably, I think I was just surprised how much grater the service was than I expected. I anticipated finding a one or two train each way service, perhaps Mon-Fri only but the service was significantly better than anticipated. Perhaps I was thinking too much of Polesworth.

Good evening, David. That’s a most nostalgic set of photo’s of Skipton from January, 1967. The last photo’ of Skipton of ex-LMS class 5, 44667, on probably, an up mineral train, shows how sad things had become by that time, with steam leaking from many places on the locomotive.

The Cramlington photo’s from today at about 10.00 a.m., are so different from the Skipton photo’s, and are an excellent selection.  They show how clinical, in many respects, I feel the railway is today. In BSC_7510, with 158850, you have a graphic view of the gap between the platform and the step onto the train. I know the track is canted through the station.

The photo’s of the WCML, from 1967 to 1976, from around Roade and Norton Bridge, are a delightful set. How things change with Pendelinos etc., in place of the traditional electric locomotives. In J977, at Roade, with class 85, E3056, on an up parcels train, in July, 1967, the locomotive is looking quite grimey.

With warmest regards,

Rob.
