Dave F's photos - ongoing - more added each day

On Friday Dave posted some classic shots of the Stapleford Miniature Railway from the mid 70s.

It's still in existence today, open two weekends a year (2nd weekend in June and August Bank Holiday)

Today this popped up on my feed from Youtube, I'm only displaying the link so as not to take too much real estate from Dave's pictures, but it's good to see these little railways from the past still operating nearly 50 years later.

Thanks for the notes about the Stapleford Park Railway, it's good to hear it is still going.

This morning (it's not quite noon as I write this) we have some photos of the (very) early days at Beamish in August 1975.  I went there while staying nearby to  visit the Stockton and Darlington 150 celebrations.  Straight away I found it fascinating, since I moved to Nortumberland in 1980 I have visited regularly and am a member of the "Friends of Beamish".  There is always lots to see, even on a quiet midweek in winter, I strongly recommend a visit.  It is only about 40 minutes from home for me.BeamishStocktonIronworksSouthDurhamMalleableNo5Aug75C2300.jpg.07cb76db71784de87bbe5d7126663e4f.jpg

My one-and-only visit so far was just a year after that. Now that No 2 daughter lives at Shildon I'm looking forward to taking the grandchildren next time!

Great pictures David,  unbelievable how much the scenes in this batch of pictures have changed.  I'm not sure there are any recognisable features. What was the industrial complex in the first one?

Was it all more-or-less at the same location? In which case, I would say it's part of a gas works. There are some interesting hoppers visible in some of the photos as well; are they former Liverpool Corporation wagone?

Despite having lived in Nottingham for 12 out of the first 16 years of my life I have to admit I'm not certain what the industry is, but to me it looks like a gas works.  I'll have a look and see what I can find out.

If I've got the right spot, it could be a chemical works :

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s of Beamish, in August, 1975, and C2307, is a beautiful portrait shot of Gateshead Tram, 10, which is also ex-Grimsby Immingham BR, at the site of the town, which had yet to be built.

The photo’s of Carlisle, are a superb set. In the last photo’ of 86426, on a Stranraer to Euston service, on the 12th April, 1988, that is a delightful shot of the 86 in it’s recreation of the 1960’s blue livery.

The black and white photo’s of the Midland, around Basford, on the north side of Nottingham, are an excellent and historical selection. In JVol1104, of a 3F, on an up light engine and brake van movement, in c1951, that is a stunning view, and one that will not be seen again.

Finally, the photo’s of Northampton Bridge Street and those at at Pye Bridge, are a splendid set. In J072, at Pye Bridge, with WD, 90366, on an up coal train, in October, 1963, your Dad has taken a superb photo’ of a once common sight.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

As far as I can see looking at published photos in books it is the gasworks.

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s of Sittingbourne and Kemsley Down, on the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Railway.  In C3025, at Kemsley Down, with Kerr Stuart, Leader, in October, 1976, you have taken a superb portrait shot of the locomotive.

The photo’s of Oban are a delightful set, and C2982, on the 15th August, 1976, is an excellent view of the station with Oban surrounding it. It is a very well composed shot.

That’s an excellent set of photo’s of North Wales at Llandudno Junction. They are full of interest, and in C5697, with class 40, 40065, on an up express passenger train, in July, 1982, you have a splendid photo’ of a typical North Wales express.

Finally, the photo’s of Dent on the Settle and Carlisle line, are a truly superb and atmospheric selection. In J1270, with Class 40, D212, Aureol, on a down goods train, in April, 1968, your Dad has taken an excellent and well composed shot of the 40 as it passes through the station.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

There always seemed to be either a 26 or a 27 stabled beside that wall at Carlisle.

Since they all worked out of Scotland, does anyone know why they were there?
