Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of Pilmoor, in May and June, 1968. In the last photo’, of the Neptune system track recording car, in June, 1968, your Dad has taken an excellent and well composed shot of the car.

The photo’s from Lincolnshire, at Holton le Moor, Melton Ross and Brocklesby, are an excellent selection. The first photo’ at Holton le Moor, with a Class 114, on a Cleethorpes to Lincoln service, in September, 1963, is a beautifully composed shot, and it can be seen that a four wheel, 12ton box van is being hauled by the unit.

What a delightful set of photo’s of Switzerland, at Kreuzlingen, on the 2nd August, 1988. In the first photo’, of MThB, ABDe4/4, 11, on a Konstanz to Weinfelden service, you have taken a beautiful shot which is expertly composed of the unit.

Finally, the photo’s of the Great Western, around Taunton and at Swindon, are a splendid selection. In the first photo’, at Taunton Silk Mill Crossing, with Hymek, Class 35, D7000, on a down cement train, in August, 1966, your Dad has taken a fantastic photo’ of the first Hymek.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Another visit to Switzerland, this time to Kreuzlingen, by the Bodensee next to Konstanz which is in Germany.  At the time of taking the photos it was served by the SBB and the Mittel Thurgau Bahn.  It is now served by Thurbo which was founded founded jointly by the SBB and MThB in 2001.  MThB was liquidated in 2003.

Hi Dave,

Photos J0978 & J0979 were taken from Deepcut Bridge Road overbridge some 2m west of Pirbright Junction itself. The curve in the distance is where the line curves to pass under the Basingstoke canal in a brick-arch aqueduct. The cutting is very deep here giving its name to the adjacent settlement that sprang up at the coming of the railway - one of the more exhausting access points to the track - a lot of steps

Deepcut Bridge Road west of Pirbright Junction Class 42 D856 Trojan Exeter to Waterloo July 67 J0978

Rare to see a North British Class 43 on the Waterloo - Exeter route. The trains were normally Swindon built Class 42s because very few if any drivers signed the 43s at the requisite depots.

Can I ask those in the know; how long did ex - SR hauled stock last after steam haulage ended ( which was around the date of J0978/9)?

Don't forget the Southern region diesel fleet were 'electric heat only' so Bulleid stock was got rid of ASAP.

Thats why some of it got painted Maroon and sent up to Scotland - while Mk1 stock went south either for loco haulage or incorporation into EMUs

Nottingham Goods south approaching Wilford Bridge O1 up mineral c1950 JVol3278   Nice photo of a an ex Private trader wagon similar to GWR diagram N31 with pair of side doors and pair of end doors. The end door stripe is attractive in being a mirror image and not going to the bottom of the body side. None of the similar wagons in Dave Larkins Acquired wagons volume 2 has the marking as this. Is the running number readable?

My memory is that they disappeared almost overnight. Now realise why!

It is a bit too blurred to read the number on the original scan, but it but it looks as though it starts P254 and ends in 2

Good evening, David. That’s an excellent set of photo’s around the Southern from the 60’s and 70’s. In J0978, at Deepcut Bridge Road, west of Pirbright Junction, with Class 42, D856, Trojan, on an Exeter to Waterloo service, in July, 1967, that’s a superb photo’, and enlarging the photo’, the seventh vehicle can be seen, just, to be a maroon liveried Gresley buffet car. The domed ends to the roof, and beading can just be made out.

The photo’s of Church Lane level crossing, on the Great Eastern, in the 1970’s, are a superb selection. In C1990, with an unidentified Class 31, on a down express train, on the 19th April, 1975, that’s a delightful shot, and again, on enlarging the photo’ I think I can see something of interest in the formation. Vehicles six and seven appear to be former Metro Cammell Pullmans. I stand to be corrected on this, but the waist is higher than the standard Mkl’s, and the windows have sliding vents. They don’t look like early Mkll’s since they have the Mkl tumble home.

What a splendid set of black and white photo’s of the Great Central, immediately north of the River Trent around Nottingham Goods. In JVol7321, of a class B1, on an up express passenger train, in c1953, that’s a superb and atmospheric shot. The first carriage is a former GNR Gresley, non corridor, BCK.

Finally, the photo’s of Crewe, on the 13th March, 1971, are of much interest, and I recall the postal strike well. In the last photo’ which is an excellent panoramic shot, with, in the centre 304021, on a Crewe to Manchester service, then Class 86, E3142, light engine, on the left, and Class 50, 404, on a down express passenger train, on the right. It can be seen that 304021, has it’s set number in white, which is something I don’t recall too well.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Good evening, David. That’s a delightful selection of photo’s of the Bowes Railway at Mount Moor level crossing, on the 5th March, 2016. . In IMG_0188, looking from the north, you have captured an excellent view of the building, although I’m not sure what it was used for.

The photo’s of the Great Eastern at Cambridge, March and Whittlesford, are a fascinating set. The last photo’ of the Whittlesford Class 37 hauled train from Liverpool St. to Cambridge, in September, 1976, shows a grimy, rusty looking Mkl’s end. It is just perfect for modellers.

That’s a great selection of photo’s of Derbyshire. In J1740, at Bamford, with a three car unit on a New Mills Central to Sheffield Midland service in June, 1969, your Dad has captured an excellent scene of a hybrid set. A Metro Cammell car leads - it’s not possible to say whether it is class 101 or 111. The other two cars are class 110, with a TSL, and a DMCL.

Finally, the photo’s of the ECML in Northumberland, at Morpeth with one at the site of Stannington Station, are a superb set. In C5531, at Morpeth, with a Class 37, on an up coal train, in August, 1981, you  have taken a beautifully composed shot of the 37 hauled train.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

The box at Whittlesford looks in very poor condition and incredibly survived for another 5 years or so.

Further to the DMU corrections, David, C1032 & C1033 are a Class 105/101 hybrid, rather than a 105 pair. I'm sure that (somewhere) I would be able to locate set formations from that time and tell you what vehicles Norwich set 57 was - but, at present, I have no idea where to look!  😁
