Love the first two Rugby photos for the 'out-of-the-box' Class 86s - even the roofs are spotless!

J2948 is obviously a train aimed at the Business market with 3FO at the front, then an RK, then another FO (presumably for 2nd class diners).

I wonder how many passengers were 'on expenses'? 🙂

Good evening, David. What a great selection of photo’s from Essex at Chappel and Wakes Colne. In C2019, of GER N7 0-6-2T, 69521, under restoration, in May, 1975, you have taken a fascinating photo’ of the sole surviving locomotive of that class.

The photo’s of electrics around Hillmorton and Rugby, are a superb set. In J819, at Rugby, with Class 86, E3156, on an up train of oil empties, from Rowley Regis to Thameshaven, in March, 1967, your Dad has taken a well composed shot of the train.

That’s a delightful assortment of photo’s of the ECML. The first photo’ at Dry Doddington, with Class 47, 1510, on the up Yorkshire Pullman, in October, 1970, is an excellent and well composed photo’ of the time of the change from the traditional Pullman livery to the new ‘reversed’ grey and blue. I know which I prefer.

Finally, that’s an excellent set of photo’s of near Bardney, from a boat on the River Witham, and then the Great Central. In J166, at Stanford on Soar, with Brittania, 70031, Byron, on a Nottingham Victoria to Marylebone service, in September, 1964, your Dad captured a superb shot, and how sad to see the Brittania in such a grimy state.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Great to see J1568 Dave, the final day of GC working between Rugby and Nottingham. I travelled from Rugby to Leicester and back that day and do wonder if I was on the train in the photo. However, a small point, I did the trip on Saturday 3rd May. The 5th May (a Monday) is given as the closure date in the records as no trains ran from that date onwards. There was no Sunday service.

I'd love to be able to do the journey again, Rugby used to have two train lines to Leicester, now we have none. The bus today takes ages so is it any wonder people use cars?

Graham, listening to the Stones singing 'Wild Horses' and getting sentimental for the old days.

I like the cabin cruiser almost as much as I like the train.

J1478; a class 31 with 12 on. Good job it’s flat round there.

The cabin cruiser might be overtaking 😄   Went on holiday that way back in 1974, (I think) and the 31 on our train wasn't exactly rapid.

Folkestone Harbour station from MV Princess Astrid April 83 J7944

I've been there when waves were breaking right over the wall at the back of the pier. Our boat train had been held at Folkestone Junction for about an hour while they decided whether our boat could get into Folkestone or would have to divert to Dover.

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s of the Talyllyn Railway from around 1969 and 1970, at Tywyn and Dolgoch. In C280, at Tywyn Wharf, with 2, Dolgoch, on the 23rd August, 1970, that’s a superb and expertly composed photo’.

The infrastructure photo’s of Folkestone harbour are a superb set. In the last photo’ of the view up the incline from the road, in April, 1975, you have a excellent view that is a bit different from the more usual photo’s and shows plenty of the different architecture there.

The photo’s from around the Great Eastern, are a splendid selection. In J4290, at Manningtree, with a Class 105 unit on a Colchester to Peterborough service, in May, 1975, your Dad has captured a most atmospheric scene with the sunlight reflecting off the train.

Finally, the photo’s of the Settle and Carlisle line are full of interest and nostalgia. In J533, at Dent Head, with an LMS Class 5, 4-6-0, on an up goods train, in July, 1966, you have a classic scene of the S & C. Such a well composed shot and full of atmosphere.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

And now we use diesels under the wires, there's progress for you.

The van with a white stripe was a FS example; the white stripe indicating it might be conveying perishable produce.. These survived a few years after the opening of the tunnel, until the Whirlpool warehouse burnt down.
