Down Waverley was 1S64

I've just had a look Dadvid Hey's photo site, it should be the 10.25 Leeds to Glasgow.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake.

Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s of the Great Eastern, at Manningtree and the Cattawade bridges. In C2665, at Manningtree, with SR S15, 841, Greene King, on a Manningtree to Loughborough excursion, with steam to Ely, on the 3rd April, 1976, you have taken a superb photo’ of the train.

The photo’s of the far north of Lincolnshire at New Holland Pier, on the River Humber, on the branch to Barton on Humber, are a delightful selection. The first photo’ of a Class 114 unit, on a passenger train to Barton on Humber, on the 11th August, 1977, is a well composed photo’, and I cannot help noticing the 16T wagon of coal for the paddle steamers before they were replaced by Farringford.

That’s a delightful set of black and white photo’s of Nottingham Victoria station. In JVol3062, with A5, 69810, on a passenger train from Derby Friargate to Nottingham, arriving at the station, in c1950, your Dad has taken a lovely photo’, which is most nostalgic, and shows how the rear spectacle plate window surrounds were kept really quite clean.

Finally, the photo’s of Aisgill in 1965, and 2003, are an excellent selection. In J328, of LMS Class 5 4-6-0, 45253, on an up goods train, in August, 1965, your Dad has taken a superb photo’ of the engine being fired hard.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

In 1976 I participated in a school railway society trip to Frodingham depot and Doncaster works incorporating a journey across the Humber from New Holland  onboard Tattersall Castle. The ferry journey took ages as it was low tide.

I assume the coal wagons stabled at New Holland provided fuel for the ferry

I visited the Tattersall Castle last Tuesday for a comedy show. Disappointed that it is permanently moored and there is no trip on the Thames.

A trip on the Thames would be difficult, since she does have engines but no paddle wheels!

Flüelen is at the southern end of the Vierwaldstättersee or Lake Lucerne

I think they copped out when they named the Lake Lucerne Shipping Company Schifffahrtsgesellschaft des
Vierwaldstättersees, as they could legitimately have used Vierwaldstätterseeschifffahrtsgesellschaft.

But then “you’re gonna need a bigger boat” just to put the name on.

Good evening, David. That’s a delightful selection of photo’s between Trent and the River Trent, in July, 1976, in the long, hot summer. In C2873, at Trent, with a Class 31, on an up freight train, and a with Class 08 running on the down line, you have taken a superb shot, and the 08 shunter provides a point of interest.

The photo’s from around Scout Green, on Shap, in 1965 and 1976, are of great interest. In C2990, with a Class 87 on an up express, on the 17th August, 1976, you have taken a well composed shot of the train on what will have been a hot day.

What a delightful set of photo’s from Switzerland at Flüelen, in 1988, and 1990. In C11368, of Ae6/6, 11514, on a southbound freight train, on the 17th August, 1988, you have a superb portrait shot of the locomotive, with  mountains and part of Lake Lucerne in the background.

Finally, the photo’s of Newark in 1970 and 1977, are a splendid selection. In J2056, with a Class 47, on probably a Bradford to Kings Cross service, in January, 1970, your Dad has taken a most atmospheric shot of the train in the snowy and misty conditions. The 47 has clearly an issue with it’s four character headcode box with it being somewhat indecipherable.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Another cracking set of evocative images Dave, very nice indeed, J2055 in particular looks like it could easily grace the cover of an Ian Allan photo album or ABC Locoshed book for 1970 / 71, it has a certain look about it.

Looking forward to the next batch of suitably grim ‘70s winters scenes.

Burton le Coggles Class 31 5640 down cartics Aug 71 J2761

Wouldn’t they be carflats rather than cartics? I always assumed cartics implied articulated vehicles, but I’m no expert.

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s of the ECML at Burton le Coggles, in August, 1971. In J2761, with Class 31, 5640, on a down carflats working, your Dad has taken an excellent photo’ of the train, and photo’s of carflat trains seem few and far between, so thank you for posting this one.

The black and white photo’s of ex-LNER 0-6-0’s at Nottingham Victoria, are a superb set. In JVol6093, taken with 1 100 f8 Ilford HP3, of J6, 64172, running light engine, in May, 1951, is real gem, including the footbridge too, plus details of the camera and film used.

That’s a fantastic selection of photo’s from around Wylam, on the Newcastle to Carlisle line, going from east to west, in April, 1981. In C5340, with a Class 101, on a Carlisle to Newcastle service, you have taken a well composed shot, with the unit beautifully framed by the signalbox and it’s supporting girders, etc.,

Finally, the photo’s of the LNWR, are an excellent set, with J068, at Welton, with a Class 08, on the LNWR ohle train, in September, 1963, being of historical interest. I cannot recall too many photo’s of electrification trains being taken, I certainly have not seen many. So, again, thank you for posting this, and the previous photo’, as taken by your Dad.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

His & Hers bath tubs conveniently hung ready for placing on the platform and to be filled with the slacker pipe of the last passing train before taking a skinny dip under the stars.😁
