The second photo is taken at Trent Valley Junction, just north of Newbold Road bridge, in fact the Ivatt is passing over the diamond crossing which carried the old Up Birmingham line over the Down Fast or Down Slow, this flat junction was replaced by the concrete flyover in 1959.

Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s from the eastern side of the country. The first photo’ at Diss, with Class 47, 1537, on an up service, in August, 1972, is an excellent photo’ and captures perfectly the 47 as it accelerates the train and gives out a big plume of exhaust.

The photo’s from around Rugby, in black and white, are a superb selection. JVol2119, of Class 5, 45391, on a passenger train from Peterboough to Rugby, in c1952, is a most impressive and well composed photo’ of the train.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s of Shildon, during the S&D 150 event, on the 24th August, 1975. C2334, of WD, 600, Gordon, is a superb front, portrait shot of the locomotive.

The photo’s of the London, Tilbury and Southend line, including the Tilbury to Gravesend ferries, are a fantastic set. C2737, at Tilbury, with ferry Edith, leaving for Gravesend, on the 15th May, 1976, being an excellent photo’ of the ferry.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s of places beginning with "L". The last photo’ at Linby, GCR, with an 01, on an up freight train, in November, 1952, is a stunning photo’ with the train in a black silhouette against the beautiful sky.

The photo’s of the Great Central just north of Loughborough, where it passes Stanford on Soar, and one photo of the viaduct across the River Soar and the meadows at Loughborough, are simply superb. J174, at Stanford on Soar, with Royal Scot, 46156, The South Wales Borderer, on an up light engine movement, in September, 1964, is a splendid photo’ of the grimy, rusty engine.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s of High Dyke, with some photos of preserved stock working to and from the High Dyke branch before the preservation period ended. J3555, of Primrose No 2 & D2381, on a ballast train, in February, 1974, being a superb portrait shot of Primrose.

The photo’s of places beginning with the letter A, at Albrighton, Annesley and Arbroath harbour, are a fantastic selection. J116, at Annesley, with LMSR, 42232, a Fairburn 2-6-4T, on a Worksop to Nottingham Midland service, in April, 1964, a splendid photo’, and it can be seen that the train was composed of a three carriage set, BSK + CK + BSK, with an SK for strengthening.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Photos around Melton Mowbray and Melton Junction.  The junction is where the lines from Nottingham and Syston Junction meet.

When the photos near the junction were taken a long foam filled buffer stop was being built on the test track, formerly the line from Nottingham.

Firstly, sorry for digging up an old post, but I've been gradually working backwards through this excellent and inspiring thread. Thank you so much for taking the time to post these pictures!

Now, why this one particularly? Well at work I've recently been doing some work on terminal over-run protection for light rail systems, and rather than re-invent the wheel I started by looking back throught the BR and TfL archives which each contained several reports on the subject. One of them described these tests briefly and gave the numerical results, but I had no idea what the foam buffer stop actually looked like. Now I know - Thank you!

Please keep up the good work with the photos.

Attached are the test reports. Oh for the days when you could spend a few days 'working' with a baby Sulzer, a few wagons, and the world's biggest can of expanding foam!
