Robatron86
Yes indeed! For the RDC, some Chicago and North Western boxcar decals and generic railroad signs (crossings, speed limits etc.)
GWR88
I'm looking forward to seeing that RDC re-done Rob. What show is it your attending soon? All the best, Lloyd
Robatron86
Thanks Lloyd. It's slow going at the moment. Next exhibition is at the Farnham and District Model Club show at the Connaught school in October. The 10th and 11th. My first 2 day show.

Robatron86
Thanks Tim. I have been experimenting with the weathering powders: Before: After: Hmmm....I don't think I have mastered it yet.
DanielB
You've got a nice weathered fade there Rob, and the blacks are muted which is good. I'd suggest finding photographs of the prototype hopper car and see which areas of the cars were most likely to catch dirt, grime, and rust, and going from there. What are you using to apply the powders, btw? I used cotton buds, dry paint brushes and tissue to apply the powders and move them around as needed. A good place to look for weathering tutorials is Traindamage's How To articles on The Rustbucket forum.
Robatron86
Thanks Dan. I'm just using the brush that comes with the powders. I struggled with applying the rust as it just blended in with the base colour! Very similar! I have many reference photos to get inspiration from, but my main aim was to see how well the snow powder looked, like a dusty appearance. I have to admit that I'm not very good at weathering as I'm not very artistic. My brain is firmly planted in the engineering side of things and I find creating free form and natural shapes quite difficult.
Adrian Wintle
Your snow looks like a typical early winter (no snowbanks) cold ('dusty' snow rather than wet stuff) snowfall. I didn't get a chance to take snow pictures, but here are a few that I found to give you some ideas. The first ones are in Dec 1983 at my parent's house in Kingston, Ontario. This was just after the first real snow of the year. The colour balance is a bit off on a couple of them (scanning issues probably...). Note the collection of '80s cars... The others are from Wimington, DE after a rather heavy snowfall, but being further south it is already melting... Adrian Wintle
And another early winter shot - there is a gravel road under there somewhere. Also, Post#8 here has some more ice and show, but late winter - crystaline drifts and clear southern-facing areas. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/86481-southern-ontario-pictures/ Adrian Edited August 10, 2015 by Adrian Wintle

Robatron86
Lighting rig has now been added. I think the colour is spot on for a really cold day.
DanielB
Now that does look good. Maybe slightly too blue, but that just might be the camera not adjusting properly.
Robatron86
I suspect it is the camera. I had been fiddling with ISO settings. The lights are definitely white.
DanielB
Just a thought - have you considered talking to Enginelane about exhibiting Tilley Street Yard at Wakefield 2016? Great exhibition that usually has an equal mix of US and UK based layouts.
Robatron86
I hadn't thought about it to be honest. No harm in asking though hey?

Robatron86
My mother passed away on the 11th of September and my plan to keep myself busy has now failed. I can no longer keep my mind focused. She was only 64. Rest in peace mum.
