Smallest terminus served by HSTs?

Hi guys,

After several iterations of a potential track plan (and literally nearly a year of chopping and changing plans, starting over, adding and adding until it doesn't all fit and getting fed up) I've decided I'm going to pare back my layout to a relatively small 4 road terminus. Having been a fan of the HSTs since a child, I finally got a chance to obtain a full rake (or rather 2) of Mk3s and 2 of the newer Hornby HSTs. It will feature in my layout but I was wondering if the HSTs actually went to any smaller terminus stations? Or if they served a sort of "temrinus wye" where they went in one way and then continued out the other side of the triangle?

It doesn't matter all that much if they never did, as it's "my railway" and I'll run HSTs if I like! But it would be nice if there was somewhere that operated in this fashion that I may use to get some feel of the types of operations they used to have. If there's anywhere on the ECML that would be even better as I'd love to use my Class 91s as well. (My era is early 90s.)

TIA

S.

Not Eastern, although GNER sets did work there, and not with a triangle, but Newquay in Cornwall has but a single platform and sees HSTs in the summer (beaten to it!).

Come to that, Penzance only manages 4 platforms, but lots of HSTs and Swansea likewise has 4 platforms, HSTs and has the triangle type arrangement, albeit a little way out of the station, and not much used by HSTs.

Sorry my suggestions are all Western, but they at least prove its possible.

At the end of the day, the OP's got the right idea. Unless totally bound by historical correctness, the modeller can run what he likes. If I ever build a model of Eastbourne station, expect to find a Class 86 and the prototype HST in the carriage sidings. Just cos I like them.

Thank you for all your help so far. I am very surprised to hear that HSTs serve a single track terminus! I like the recommendation of Saltburn - it's not too far away from where I want to be and is in God's Own County to boot.

It is still a smaller station than I intend to model, but this allows me to apply some modellers' license.

Bradford or is that too big? I think HSTs used to call there once; Grand Central before the plastic bog carts?

Possibly Skeggy and Scarborough?

How about the 'excursion excuse' and then choose your Terminus!!

P

AFAIK, Skeggy never had a scheduled HST service, but East Midland Trains have ran a HST to and from Skeggy on Summer Saturdays before.

But, staying on the Eastern, Cleethorpes used to be the starting point for some Kings Cross trains in BR times, and the 'Hull Executive' used to be a HST, and that lasted up to electrification. Going north of the Border, there is Inverness, and Glasgow Queen Street, both smallish termini, with HST services.

I know it's slightly off topic, but Deltics used to run on a Filey to Kings X on Summer Saturdays, not a terminus either, but proving large trains ran from small stations.

I know Deltics went to Cleethorpes too although not sure of the services they ran on.

Both locations saw Deltics in the late 70's or early 80's, so "could" have been replaced by HST's when the Deltics were withdrawn......

Just an idea.

Cheers.

Sean.

Cleethorpes is another great suggestion - totally by accident my layout plan for the station looks similar-ish to Cleethorpes, except there are 2 tracks approaching the station rather than one.

Some great ideas chaps, thank you.

A couple of points of interest were raised in an article in the Feb 2000 RM about the Robin Hood line in Nottinghamshire, suggesting some possibilities.  The article speculated about the extension of morning and evening HST services to Mansfield to provide a through commuter service to London. AFAIK this hasn't happened (but then, I'm a bit behind UK rail developments these days) but the speculation was based on a similar extant through HST service operating in Yorkshire serving Barnsley, presumably via Doncaster.  A quick look at Google Streetview suggests that neither Mansfield nor Barnsley is impractically huge in their current form.

Bognor Regis; Littlehampton; Newhaven Marine; Seaford; Eastbourne; Uckfield; Alton; East Grinstead; Chessington South; Tattenham Corner; Epsom Downs; Caterham; Shepperton; Hampton Court;  Henley on Thames; Windsor (choose); Severn Beach;  Stratford upon Avon; Yarmouth; Lowestoft; Aberystwyth;  LLandudno; Buxton;  Matlock; Blackpool South; Morecambe; Heysham; West Kirby;

Barton on Humber; Windermere; Bishop Auckland; Bere Alston; Kingswear; Barnstable; Lymington Pier; Weymouth; Swanage; Minehaed; WEston Super mare; Barry Island. Welsh valley destinations? The Essex branches? Manchester Airport?

Scotland!!

OK a bit tongue in cheek with an emphasis on the cheek, but hey, it's your excursions!

P.S. There was a GNER HST into/out of Hull in the early 2000s. Then Hull Trains was born!!

It never happened - I'm not sure if it would be a viable service for commuting to London. It would take well over 2 hours (with a reverse at Nottingham). I think the main benefit would be extra seats from Mansfield to Nottingham, although even now a full with some standing 2 car DMU is normally enough for peak hour services.

Didn't Virgin trains run some 2 coach HST sets in their early days, due to poor 158 availability?

Proof of Cleethorpes:

Midland Mianline used to run a 170 from Barnsley, so I guess it would be EMT now via Sheffield if there was to be a Barnsley>>> London HST....

There used to be a HST from Barnsley before 170s.
