Loco Hauled services to return to Cumbrian Coast

Recommended Posts

For added interest anyone out West on Wednesday 18th June there is a Compass tour from Whitehaven to Scarborough which may give possible photo ops at Whitehaven http://www.compassrail.co.uk/trips/130-Whitehaven-Scarborough-June-2015.cfm

Other good locations are Dalston around 08:20 - 08:51 where you should get the loco hauled set passing the Dalston Grangemouth Tanks http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/DLS/2015/05/19/0822?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt

Dont go on a Monday though the Grangemouth train is Tuesday - Saturday. :dontknow:

Article from the carlisle News and Star newspaper today.

"More seats but slower journey times on Cumbria Coast rail line"

Rail passengers in Cumbria will face slower journey times from next month, as train bosses sacrifice speed in the name of comfort.

From May 18, travellers on the Cumbrian Coast line between Carlisle and Barrow will enjoy additional seating thanks to the introduction of new “loco hauled” trains.

But Northern Rail has warned these slower trains, which will replace the cramped diesel multiple unit services, will extend journey times....

I would have thought that a Class 37 or Class 57 would be just as fast as a sprinter...

I'd take comfort over a few minutes any day anyway, sounds like a big improvement. I've never travelled the Cumbrian Coast line and this is a great opportunity, but I'd say the same for any journey I make regularly (if there were still any, the only one I was doing vaguely regularly I stopped when it became faster and less comfortable.)

It might be to do with extended dwell times at each station due to the use of slam door stock- central door locking and dispatch that goes with the use of loco hauled trains.

Just takes one customer at coach one at the front of the train to get off the train, walk away without shutting the door behind them, conductor has to run all the way to the front to shut the door and that's how delays accumulate.

Hi all,

Are the DBSO's going to be used on these diagrams?

Regards

Vin

DRS only have two DBSO's anywhere near ready. Only one DRS DBSO has been released from RVEL so far - as of about two days ago. The other is still in RVEL Derby to my knowledge. A well known gen site is reporting that DRS may have acquired three more in the past few days, possibly for use on Anglia duties.

Cheers,

Mick

Hi Mick,

Thanks for the info on the DBSO's, I did think that these diagrams is why they bought them in the first place.

Why are Northern rail making out that loco hauled is a bad subsitution for rancid DMU's that should have been scrapped 10 years ago? As the pacer fleet was only a cheap stop gap in the first place.

Many thanks

Vin

few more of 423 from the last couple of days, only 16 more days to go, till start up, here's hoping all the problems will be sorted out, lack of stock only 5 coaches out of 12 needed(all the good stuff went to Anglia), availability of 37 4's, Northern train crew issues, platform lengthening behind schedule etc, hope this isn't a case of DRS " biting of more than they can chew"!

I can see the 1004 from Preston being popular with the neds. Into Barrow with 5 minutes to spare for the 1138 to Carlisle. I pity the normal passengers.

Northern Rail have a £12.50 go anywhere offer with the local papers for the next few weeks. I have the tokens ready. Remind me not to go on the 1004.......

Cheers,

Mick

Alternate day diagrams Mick. Diagram 1 Monday, Diagram 2 Tuesday, Diagram 1 Wednesday etc.

Looked at going up on the first day but can't swing it with work. The 10.04 goes ECS til the 14.37 working on diagram 1.

Exactly - Diagram 1 to Barrow, pick up diagram 2 from Barrow. That way, you get both locos.

First day (and week) will be ned central - glad I can't make it either.

At the moment, it looks like the DBSO's aren't ready, so top n tail is the plan - but they haven't got four 37/4's spare - yet!

Cheers,

Mick

So with not enough 37/4's...... If I go down to Carnforth station every day I wonder what my chance of getting a ride behind either a 57, 66 or 68 will be xD
