Vin
Hi John H, The siding leads into the port of Workington complex. It is the northern entry/exit point, as it can be entered from the back of the station with a reversal over a single track bridge. long island jack
Vin, that's the only way on and off the docks now, the river bridge was damaged beyond repair in the great floods of 2009,it's a shame, no more photo's like this!! everything that from the north that needs to go on the dock, has to go to Workington yard to run round then head back north to reverse on to the docks, anything from the south just reverse in, but if it wants to go back south it has to go to Maryport, that why all DRS trains that go on to dock are top and tailed (in my previous post of 510 there was another pair of 37 on the end of the train) Ray Edited June 3, 2015 by long island jack
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted June 3, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 3, 2015 (edited) Is the 5 minute connection working at Barrow between the 1133 arrival from Preston and 1138 departure to Carlisle? I'm planning on using my Northern day rover from the local paper in a couple of weeks up there. Iron Horse
It didn't last Friday when the Queen turned up at Lancaster.....lol. Fortunately for me I was bailing at Lancaster anyway
long island jack
Mick don't know much about the connection timing at Barrow, i'm from "up north", going by todays train (5 late) they must have held for the Preston!(left at 11.40) rumors on the grapevine are the DBSO will be on the trains in a week or so, they will be on both trains facing south, so if your wanting to get some decent photos now's the time, the sun faces north in the morning (right hand side for south bound),it face north in the afternoon(left hand side for south bound)north bound trains your looking into the sun (unless it a dull day) southbound 2c34 at long and smalls, this shot will be a DBSO soon
Vin
Cheers Long Island Jack, It must have been before the floods the last time I was there. That trestle bridge always looked the worst for wear even when in use! How many DBSO's has DRS got ready for the services? Surely a pool of three will be required for maintenance swaps. Regards Vin At last count, one was complete and at Kingmoor, another was at least in blue and still at RVEL - but we are talking a few weeks ago. I don't think they have a third one near ready. My guess is that the maintenance swap will involve a 37/6 instead of the DBSO. However, there doesn't seem to have been any training runs with them - so far........ Not the same, but similar. My brother has planned a loop - 1004 start from Preston, up the coast to Carlisle, down the S&C to Leeds and back via Manchester - takes about 11 hours! All on Northern Rail. Cheers, Mick
RMweb Premium Reorte Posted June 4, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 4, 2015 Via Manchester better still for me, my nearest station is on the Buxton line so into Manchester then onwards. Just perhaps I'll get around to doing it...

RMweb Premium 31A Posted June 5, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 5, 2015 Some pictures from a nice ride around the Cumbrian Coast in glorious weather on Wednesday; not easy to photograph trains and ride on them but here we go!
long island jack
I see you got the classic shot out of the Prince(it that a mild!), for those who partake in a drop of the good stuff don't go to the Prince Monday/Tuesday there shut, can recommend the "bear in the square" ,Millom or all 3 pubs in Ravenglass or the 4 pubs in St Bees. Ray Yes, it had to be done! Probably was a mild, can't remember. Not knowing much about the area or where to go (and bearing in mind train times), we alighted from the northbound at Workington for lunch at Wetherspoons then caught the southbound loco hauled back to Foxfield, had a little while there then caught the afternoon northbound loco hauled through to Carlisle. A long time since I'd been all the way round the Cumbrian Coast line and had forgotten quite how splendid the coastal scenery is (helped by glorious weather), although sad to see the decline at Workington since the steelworks closed. RMweb Premium 31A Posted June 8, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 8, 2015 The trains I rode on last Wednesday were all pretty busy at some stage or other during their journeys. A fair few 'cranks', but not by any means in the majority I don't think. Glad I didn't go in the school holidays!
Vin
Hi all, It's been a good day, yesterday the 1004 Preston to Barrow left Preston 2 minutes late @ 1006 with 37423 at the helm and 37419 trailing. With several quarter miles timing at 11.1 seconds. The arrival at Barrow was 11.37 because of the speed restrictions before Barrow. 37609 & 37402 doing the honours for the second diagram. I'll have to upload the photos later. Regards Vin
