Class 26

I was sorely tempted to one, but they aren't exactly common down on the South Coast... Had a damn good look on the Saturday of TINGS and was seriously impressed with the detail and paint finish. One stand had one running on a short demo loop and that looked great.

Now Dapol, you've got the basic chassis and body, hows about a 33?

26 015 seems to be available now on Rails site:

http://railsofsheffield.com/class-26-015-br-blue-with-full-yellow-ends-nd145a-JJJA18027.aspx

What caught my eye in their pictures were the "rivets" around the cant rail grills - not something that's there on the real thing. Other thing is the apparent beading around bodyside windows (copying Heljan, rather than the real thing?). However, at a quick glance certainly looks like a 26! Might even have this 4mm modeller investing!

Mercig looks to have added very nicely to the model in his post above, although the black around the front windows does look a bit "panda eyes" - compare with the real thing:

This was a tough call to make. Dapol have moulded the rubber surrounds onto the loco and should be given credit for doing so....at this scale the moulding is probably about as good as the tolerance of the process can take, which means it is slightly too thick to be prototypically spot on. A good picture of the rubber surrounds can be seen here:

http://www.martinbra...erth-050584.jpg

and then compare to this which is roughly the size of the loco to normal viewing (dependant on your monitor settings):

post-3594-0-27597000-1316114170.jpg

So you have the option of either painting the moulding black or leaving yellow.... or you could get rid of them entirely which would not be easy as well as leaving you with no surrounds. In all these aspects you have to remember that this is a 2mm model and at normal viewing you probably would not ever notice. On the flip side of this Dapol should be given credit for getting the handrails the correct thickness as well as the bag of bits which are incredibly fine and prototypically correct.

Like with any model, in any scale, if you look long and hard enough you will find faults but this is a great little loco that I would heartily recommend and both examples I have run superbly.

Looks great and i was just going to order one until i realised that this model represents a modified 26 with its front end having 2 of its marker lights removed.I take that there will be further versions in BR Blue with the 4 positioned indicator discs and lights?.This is the variant that i liked best.Suppose i will have to wait!

A few of the Class 26s do seem to have received Class 27 rubber beaded style windscreens in later years, but the majority kept their plainer style windows to the end. The typical Cl.26 front end windscreens looked like this The chances are that some were only partially converted, perhaps one end only after accident damage, so yet another minefield to walk through!

26015 as modelled by Dapol is in it's mid to late 80's early 90's guise (although it received it's tapered bogie steps quite late on):

If you want to do a renumber from the model then you are on tricky ground. As Bernard says it is a 'minefield' and just a variety of the things you have to watch out for are bogies/bogie steps/rubber surrounds/headcode box/position of cables/buffers etc etc. Two relatively easy renumbers are 011 and 001 but again only from around 1986-89ish

A good site for class 26 info can be found here:

Hi 26Power - seems like you missed the obvious on the pic shown on the Rails site... a small boiler control access hatch (or that's what I have been told it is!). It was removed when the 26's were first painted blue - sorry Dapol. Despite that tiny niggle I still think the class 26 is a fantastic model, thank you for investing the time and effort :clapping_mini:

If you look closely at this pic of 26015 (Carlisle 1983) perhaps you can just make out the detail around the cant rail grills that Dapol are perhaps trying to portray:

I can vouch for Mr Mercigs comments, at normal viewing the loco window surrounds don't look anything like panda eyes :good:(No pandas on my layout)

Think i would rather wait as surely a 4 disc version would have 4 working white lights rather than the two apparent on this version????

Fingers crossed for the 27 though!!!

Great days for n gauge!!!(just a retooled Class 40, 55 and domino headcode 47 left on my wish list if the 27 appears!!)

...provided that spare parts, like boiler water tanks, are made available.

cue Dapol Dave :declare:

If only I'd read the thread from the start again..... sorry Dave

Also we are doing 2 types of bogie(inc leaf spring), and 2 types of bogie steps, plus snowploughs in the pack with the loco, along with customer added roof radio pods (where necessary) etched disc headcodes (where applicable), 2 types of underframe and with / withough door window, plated front door, welded front door or hinged front door, plus round / oval buffers and different roof shoulder grilles.

It sounds like you want the moon on a stick! :pleasantry: I think you may be waiting a long time... don't you think Dapol have done enough for us 'N Gaugers' recently???

No way am i complaining. In fact im celebrating the progress n gauge has made in recent years with the wonderful diesels that both Farish & Dapol have produced.Im more than willing to wait for my variations. I was just commenting on what would complete my ideal loco pool after the magnificent recent locos that have been released (HST,26,67,37/0,66,101,47/4,DP1 etc)Great progress and indeed great days for N-gauge

Okay...by way of tempering this thread, my blue 26 turned up today in Spain, pre-ordered from Hattons a long time ago

First impressions are a very nice model. I haven't decided what to renumber my one yet...if I do but I thought I would include a few pics and also a few in context 'plonked' out of the box on my scottish boxfile layout, as it seems better context than my cornish ones...

post-3290-0-42664800-1316692134.jpg

Nicely presented in Dapol's flash new packaging...we like!

Plan shot...some nice crisp detailing here...

Close up...sorry its a bit OOF...

Arriving at Kyle...I know...I need to finish the station building...

Posing with Farish Mk I's...

Preparing to leave Kyle...

I have not had a chance to run it yet but on first impressions, it does certainly look to be another tasty model from Dapol, and really looks the part after Ian of Mercig has weathered and detailed his as seen above.

I do need to redo some parts and finish this layout off and I think this 26 is just the spark needed to start that...first I have to finish my 2011 diorama... :O

Millerhillboy;

The numbers as depicted on the Dapol Blue 26 are indeed reminiscent of the larger St Rollox output in BR Blue Days. They are not 'quite' right bing a little narrow and hence, the spacing looks a little off....but are probably close enough not to worry many people.

Numbering seems one area where Dapol do sometimes struggle, I feel....certainly the numbering on the Railfreight Coal 26 to come seems a little large and some of the 156s (notably with white printed numbers) also seem overscale. Perhaps, it is a limitation of the inking process.

Overall, the 26 looks like a very well produced model and....if the typeset of the numbers is the only niggle, well then ...that's fine too!!!

I have to say that I haven't obtained one of these yet.....but I do have a RF Red Stripe version already in the cabinet from elsewhere!!!

One thing those numerals do look 'quite' big, is that supposed to be a 'Glasgow' works numbering job. Maybe they don't look so big in the flesh.

I think so, they look quite big on the prototype too.

Hard to compare without shots at the same angle etc but the Dapol one looks about on the money to this sassenach.

I do believe depending on where the particular loco was overhauled then the numbers could be bigger, however from personal memory I don't remember them being as chunky as all that. I used to see blue 26s at Millerhill as a matter of course. 26001-26006 in particular with the slow speed control for Cockenzie but it will have been 20 years perhaps since I saw one in the flesh!

As Stu says, if that's the only problem then we can easily live with or amend ourselves to suit.

Rather than posting a photo of a Class 27 [sorry Mr Karhedron :-)] here's a photo of 26015 in person, so to say, .

Seems as though the numbers on the real loco are smaller, I'm comparing with the lines of British Rail double arrow and referencing also Hatton's photo

http://www.flickr.co...tos/5457083680/

but the blue between the two grills seems to be missing or not sharply enough defined, or is that just my eyesight?
