Ally Pally is now just inside the London ULEZ so take care not to get caught out. The A405 North Circular is the boundary.

Here's a link to TFL's vehicle checker
https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle/

Definitely worth checking.

My two gas guzzlers, standard congestion charge.
My newer smaller more efficient diesel,  congestion charge+Ulez = more expensive.

just highlighting it’s worth checking, not making any politico/enviro point.

A405 to Ally Pally won't incur a congestion charge as the original Central London congestion charge zone remains unexpanded. If you're attempting a drive across London however...!

ULEZ charge is £12.50 for motorbikes, cars & light vans.

I put my small modern petrol car in the search and although I am coming from outside the North circular it still shows I have to pay £15 ?

The website only shows whether your vehicle is liable to pay the various zonal charges - you need to actually drive in the relevant zone to incur the fee.

Ally Pally is only in the ULEZ zone and so you only need to worry if your car comes up for the ULEZ charge and you drive to the exhibition.

Of course as Mark says, if you drive through other zones and your vehicle is liable for these then those charges will of course apply in addition.

I'm  being told that my Jazz doesn't qualify for the ULEZ charge but that Alexandra Palace is within the congestion zone.

Public transport is by far the best way to get Ally Pally but I'm boycotting trains and buses because of Covid-19.

Perhaps I'll give it a miss this year.

Ally Pally is NOT within the congestion charging zone unless, as said above, you drive through central London to get there.  Go to https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/congestion-charge/congestion-charge-zone and look at the map on that page which shows where it applies.

My 8 year old petrol Focus does not attract a ULEZ charge so I'm sure anything newer with a petrol engine would be OK too.

Sorry if I set some hares running on this.  It shows that the information can be a bit confused.

TFL can be expected to have the definitive info but even then I've found anomalies.

Petrol cars from quite a while back can be ULEZ compliant. My mum's '03 Micra is compliant

I have just checked to see if I have to pay, but I am now confused to hell with the messages that have show.

The first one is "

Congestion Charge

£15.00 to £17.50 a day

Where it operates:

Central London only - check a postcode or location

Charging times:

07:00-22:00, every day, except Christmas Day (25 December) and the period up to and including New Year’s Day Bank Holiday."

And the second one is,

"You do not need to pay for any other charging zones

If you do not see the Congestion Charge, Ultra Low Emission Zone charge or the Low Emission Zone charge displayed above, it means that your vehicle meets the emissions standard, or the charging zone does not apply to this type of vehicle."

Help!

Confused Terry.

Your car is ULEZ complient so you don't need to pay. If you drive to Ally Pally from the north you will be fine.

It's only if you drive into the very middle of London and into the Congestion Charge zone that you would need to pay something.

Ally Pally is outside the Congestion Charge zone but its within the Ultra Low Emission Zone.

What you are looking at there is the Congestion Charge zone. Not the ULEZ.

Thank you. I shall be coming in from the north, but I shall make decision near the time if to go pr not.

I  don't know about the current rules, but I understood the original scheme allowed you to drive across London provided you stuck to certain major through routes, like A1/ Tower Bridge / A2.  I think that was required under some EU directive aimed at allowing free travel across Europe (except obviously for ferry fares and bridge and bridge tolls).  The charge applied the moment you turned off into silly little side streets though, so quite what happened if there were a diversion because of roadworks, I don't know.

The Greater Manchester ULEZ will be up and running soon, implications on any vans for model railway exhibitions within the zone.

Signs all over the place in my little town alone saying I am leaving and entering the zone, unless the M60 is somehow exempt.

Edit: All the Motorways are exempt in Manchester, but Wigan is in the zone so implications if taking a van to the show there later this year.

Will be there as a visitor and surprised not to see trains4u and dckits/legomann biffo there

There will be quite a number of the regular Traders not attending, probably due for the need to maintain social distancing and other factors, as there were 104 Traders attending the last Ally Pally exhibition against 72 for this year’s show.

I know of one kit manufacturer who has decided to stop going to shows. The pandemic has shown him he can continue his business quite nicely with a small reorganisation of what he sells. Shows were beginning to be an issue especially as his wife is ill and he is well into retirement

Concentrating maintaining his business online, far less pressure and upheaval

However this in its self will give others opportunities to fill the void plus show organisers may have to think again how they run and finance shows

As for Alley Paly, its one of my favourite shows, especially the smaller room. Firstly I love the demonstrations, secondly the grouping of the specialist traders together.

Hello all,

Revolution Trains will be attending the Alexandra Palace show for the first time, and it'll be the first time we have attended an exhibition anywhere further south than Milton Keynes.

We will also be at Model Rail Scotland at the end of this month, and are really excited about getting back on the road and into busy and fun shows again!   With Warley cancelled last year, these are the first shows we have attended for several months, and we look forward to seeing and chatting to visitors.  If things go according to plan we should have at least one new project to offer too.

cheers

Ben A.

Anyone coming down the ECML there’s engineering works between York and Doncaster so it’s 2 3/4 to 3 hrs from York to London……looks like Doncaster for me……and York of course.

Ticket booked.  Looking forward to this, it has been too long.  Just hope RevolutioN have the 313 prototypes for me to mull/drool over!!

I used to be able to catch a 313 from here if I wanted to go to Ally Pally.

Long slow journey on one of those things running all stations, and they had uncomfortable seats.  Especially after late night travellers had chucked the seat cushions out of the windows.  -0

I always preferred to catch a 312 and change trains.
