Beasts feeling blue

Some of these have appeared on previous incarnations of the forum, they are scans from my negatives, one day they will be rescanned at far better quality, but for now they are best shared I feel. The quality is somewhat dubious in a lot of cases, but they are better than nothing.

I will add photos of signals, wagons etc. into the other threads I've created.

Note the temporary platform surface, a derailment modified the structure !

Ellesmere Port No.2, an LNWR type 5 opened during early LMS days is visible behind, as is the West yard

That looks a bit light for iron ore, both in colour and in the way the wagons are heaped; could it have been limestone, I wonder? I know most ore for Summers was imported via Birkenhead, and coal came from North Staffs and elsewhere, but where did they get their limestone from?

I was thinking the same when I posted it, I guess I generically thought "Summers = Ore" when I wrote the caption all those years ago, probably limestone from Tunstead.

That's just for the blue period, there's another 50-75,000,000 or so until digital and then another 400,000+ ... I need to retire I think (wish)

Lovely signal Dave. Nice view of the contact boxes, a detail rarely modelled but very visible! Keep them coming :paint: .

Mornin'

Some great pics on here. The one of the 2 x 25 on ex ironstone hoppers full of sand will have been a diverted Oakamoor to St Helens British Industrial Sand working for Pilkington glass. A daily working at the time via Stoke and Crewe.

Regards

Wonderful pictures Dave; have you though of putting a book together?

Keep 'em coming on here anyway...

David

Hi David,

Yes but too much effort, I was working with Greg Fox on a Scenes from the Past - Birkehead, until his sad demise, and that was more than enough to convince me not to bother - nowadays I'm happy to supply them to the Internet and let others use the information, as long as the photos aren't published under someone else's name I'm no longer worried what happens to them - I can't take them with me to the other side.

I've found a few Holyhead ones which I'll post over the next few days, but not much of real interest I'm afraid.

Ok thanks for the info; look forward to more pics on here then!

Anything on Holyhead/N.Wales generally always welcome...

David

For me there's a lot going on in those photos.....The platform surface and edging colouring for instance, the grey ash cess.

I agree a lot of effort goes into producing books (for little financial return), but having said that I am glad I wrote them. Greg had a pair of North Wales steam era albums in preparation, as did Bill Rear. I wonder if anyone will pick up he mantle.
