RMweb Premium Popular Post Jason T Posted September 6, 2014 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted September 6, 2014 As some of you will be aware, I'm a member of Shipley MRS. One Tuesday night a few weeks ago, Chris and I got chatting about the EM Gauge Society's forthcoming competition, namely to build a working layout in 60" by 18.2". One thing led to another and the following week, I took along some rough sketches, Chris seemed keen and we decided to give it a go. 5' x 18" is not much room when it needs to incorporate a fiddle yard. Sure, we could have plumped for the 8,527th TMD to be depicted in miniature but Chris's interests lie in pre-war LNER and I (quite obviously) lean towards early-mid period BR steam, with a leaning towards the L&Y. A traditional BLT would be far too cramped so we decided to go down the industrial route, which has a number of advantages: Cramped space with tight radii are not out of place Small industrial locos shuffling a couple of wagons around are believable I love building grotty mills If done carefully, the time period can be stretched from the 30's to the early 70's (with obvious changes of stock and locos) Both Chris and I have a yearning to build small industrial locos. Of course, just after we decided to do this, I went off to Spain for a week, followed by getting married and well, life's been a bit hectic ever since. This hasn't stopped Chris though, who's already progressed with the baseboards to the point where they only need a bit of tweaking and they're done. This morning, I had a go at improving the Templot plan by trying to draw the outside slip properly. Good grief; it's going to take a while longer and a LOT more swearing. However, below is the very rough (and doctored in Paint) Templot plan that is our starting point. Over the next few months, we'll be track building, knocking together the mill and shed, building locos and stock, wiring it all up and then detailing everything. As time is now precious, don't expect Bacup-style progress and updates but we'll get there (even if it just uses Chris's G5 on it's first outing). Over to Chris now for some progress shots.

Andrew P
Great Stuff my son, you and Chris have plenty to do and the thought of a grotty industrial Mill and old warehouses really appeals to me. I cant wait to see it up and running, what the timescale for the competition, and will there be signs of an old Canal somewhere? Bodge. RMweb Premium Jason T Posted September 6, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 6, 2014 The mill is to depict part of a larger structure as there is only so much you can cram into <5' As can be seen from the plan, the main building will be along the back of the layout and will have at least one lucam with (hopefully) a working crane/ winch). To the left will be the boiler house & engine room and to the right, a shed for loading finished products. Front left are the coal drops and there will be one short siding to chuck a couple of empties. Due to the restrictions in length, trains will consist of short wheelbase shunters and two or three wagons; opens, vans and coal hoppers; there's no need for brakevans. Andy, we're hoping to have it completed for next summer, in fact as we are already on a promise to exhibit at Goathland next July (and Paul will play hell if we don't ). No canal, there's no room for one.
RMweb Premium 2ManySpams Posted September 6, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 6, 2014 Great idea starting a thread... Looks very interesting, particularly given the small area you have to play with. Crack on and don't forget Mrs Sandside needs to help too - sharing a hobby would be a wonderful way to celebrate just being married ;-p
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 6, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2014 At the rate you throw together buildings and Chris builds stock it should be easily finished by July!

Chris-GNR
Morning After just a few chats at the club about the idea of doing somthing & Jason coming up with a great track plan idea that was enough in my mind to get the creative juices flowing. So once the templot diagram appeared we could visualise how to build it, at this point Jason was otherwise 'engaged',well up untill he got married that is so I thought I'd just make a bit of a start & go get some decent 9mm birch base ply & be ready to make a start when he got back. One idea leads to another & I've ended up with a nearly complete baseboard. The guys at the timber yard (Harrogate Timber) even cut most of it to size for me, good lads. Below is how it is at the moment.... Here is the uncut top withsome SMP flexi & a couple of PCB turnouts I have that are nearly right just to help mark out for the building & cutting the top to shape & just to try get a feel for what it's going look like. As Jason has said the plan is to have a Woking unloading crane/hoist ' I've made a start on the mech for this I'll try get a pic of this posted up later on. Cheers for now... georgeT
Hi Jason, Looks and sounds very interesting, do love small layouts.. George
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted September 7, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 7, 2014 The Mill sound and looks great, playing to both your strengths. Can't wait to see you get stuck into the building, you do northern industrial scenes so well.
thecheesemiester
Looks very interesting. I also like industrials so i look forward to seeing how this layout progresses. Will
Indomitable026
Nice job on the base board. Looking forward to this one...
RMweb Gold Donw Posted September 7, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 7, 2014 Looks good and that dropped section at the front could well be a canal if you wanted. Don
Indomitable026
Shouldn't it be 'T-t' Mill
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted September 7, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 7, 2014 Would be good if you could include a working wagon turntable in to the mill - you look to have enough depth between the mill line and the baseboard edge. Does the Mill make baseball caps by any chance ?
RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted September 7, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 7, 2014 What sort of couplings will you be using ? Reaching 3-links from over the backscene will be a stretch, and operating from the front will mean running round to the sector plate quite frequently. Indomitable026
A mill that size - well, there's going to be loads...
RMweb Premium Jason T Posted September 7, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 7, 2014 It'll be the dreaded AJ's. No wagon turntables as the interior of the mill will be used to store stock, coffee mugs and beer.
Indomitable026
you're not modelling the interior?
RMweb Premium Jason T Posted September 7, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 7, 2014 No mate. It will be quite low relief as it is and we need the storage space
Indomitable026
I've often wondered about mounting a beer pump on the back of a layout - something I was going to do on one of the BCB fiddles. I didn't in the end because the pumps were so expensive.!
RMweb Premium Jason T Posted September 7, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 7, 2014 Problem is, everyone would be wanting to operate that fiddle yard. Perhaps when it goes roundy roundy
