RMweb Premium newbryford Posted April 28, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 28, 2015 (edited) A couple of weeks ago, "we" (Blackburn & East Lancs MRS) started work on a replacement for the now-departed "Blackmill" after many months of kicking around with scribblings on bits of paper. It's going to be a continuous run with a trackplan based primarily on a real-life freight only location, but moved about 60-70 miles further north into an area that allows us to run a few passenger trains for operational (and operator) interest. There is a clue in the name that may give away the new location. It will still be based upon present day operations and a reasonable proportion of the rolling stock will be from that seen on Blackmill, but as ever, the stock will be kept current as much as practically/financially possible. At present, we're building a prototype baseboard to test out a couple of ideas - nothing spectacular or visionary - just to confirm our initial design ideas and lessons learnt from building BM. RMweb Gold Trevellan Posted April 29, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 29, 2015 If Bankfield is half as good as Blackmill, you'll have a fantastic layout. I look forward to seeing progress.

RMweb Premium newbryford Posted May 5, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 5, 2015 Out with the jigsaw tonight - the first pairs of end boards have had the basic profile cut. They are matched pairs, already fitted with alignment dowels. Cheers, Mick
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted May 12, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 12, 2015 (edited) First board assembled. Using the ample workshop space of our Hon. Treasurer - many thanks to Mrs Hon Treas for the bacon butty and coffee - much appreciated. The clamps are only holding on the matching end board from the adjacent (as yet to be built) board. The left side is the back and will retain the full height board, the right side is the front and this will be cut down to a lower profile. The shape is dictated partly by our choice of prototype inspiration. They are sized to fit in the lift at the clubrooms. It's a shared space and has disabled access - handy for shifting boards up and down one floor. As it happens, they're also a nice fit in our treasurer's Landy! RMweb Premium newbryford Posted September 24, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 24, 2015 As with most club layouts, it's slow progress as generally work is only done on one night per week. It's taken awhile, but we've managed to assemble three baseboards. The front boards - on the left - will be cut down considerably to enable viewing. The trackplan has been laid on the boards and will be suitably adjusted so that pointwork doesn't cross joints or that point motors don't impinge upon the centre cross members (The paper plan has already mostly taken these into account anyway) Updates as and when. Cheers, Mick
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted October 4, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 4, 2015 (edited) As with most club layouts, it's slow progress as generally work is only done on one night per week. It's taken awhile, but we've managed to assemble three baseboards. And the front boards have now been profiled to shape. All of a sudden, it starts to look like a layout................ There will be another 4 boards to make up the full scenic section Cheers, Mick Edited October 4, 2015 by newbryford

RMweb Premium newbryford Posted November 25, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 25, 2015 (edited) Progressing slowly. All of the main front scenic boards are now built. Some profiling of the front edges to do and then we start filling in the basic scenery with foam insulation. All 28' of it (so far........) nathan9117
Looking really good I remember when I went to Warley for the first ever time and I saw Blackmill my jaw dropped I had never seen a layout like it ! if only I had space to create something similar. I have no doubts this layout will be just as good and better !
Guest Digital
Looking great so far. If Blackmill was anything to go by this will be a superb layout. RMweb Premium newbryford Posted January 19, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 19, 2016 (edited) Despite very little progress on Bankfield in the last few weeks (we've been checking out New Bryford for it's trip to Telford in February, much discussion has been going on in the background regarding scenic items. We are very fortunate to have Steve Hewitt amongst our club members as he is the builder of many fine semaphore signals, including those found on the club layout Oxenholme and John Holden's Liverpool Lime Street opus. A casual mention to Steve a couple of weeks ago to ask if he could build the semaphores for Bankfield and he requested a couple of photos of what we would like and a signalling diagram. We haven't yet got the diagram, but we do require three double ground shunt signals and he turned up at the club tonight with the first test build using some recently acquired etches. Servo operated, complete with fibre optic lighting. (Apologies for the dodgy phone pics) The signals are approximately 12mm high! RMweb Gold Steve Hewitt Posted January 20, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 20, 2016 Thanks Mick, The etch for the ground signal came from Palatine Models - part of the Manchester MRS who are involved with their P4 project "Slattocks Junction". see http://www.palatinemodels.co.uk/ Steve. RMweb Premium newbryford Posted March 22, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 22, 2016 (edited) Bankfield is gaining momentum. We've been busy making up or "flat pack" for the four corner baseboards. Hopefully, the next two weeks at the club will see them built and the full frontal section complete from a major woodworking point of view. The trackplan is being tweaked to suit the board joints and cross pieces, but there's no substitute for looking at it with a model or two to get a proper impression of what it will look like This is the first rake of wagons bought mainly for use on BF. Dapol HIA's - tested on the club's other roundy - they ran really well, with a couple of test propelling moves. (sorry, no pics) Arriving on the down main before setting back into the loading area And a view over the ladder from the down loops, exiting onto the up main.
