  1. Ron, The equipment between the guides is actually pulleys and ropes which were attached to the lorry and used to move the tanker onto the wagon. The tankers had extra steel wheels inside the tyres to engage on the metal rails to relieve the pneumatic tyres during rail transit. One significant ommission) was 40122(D200) 0n the Penzance Fryer 9th November 1985 allegedly the first class 40 to Penzance (it definitely went through Devon) At Teignmouth (before the bi-directional gantry signals were installed.)   18. A trip on the C.M.E. 21st August 1980 produced 5690. Pics taken at Apppleby - no H&S in those days -just common sense. This was the day Leander left our train and went to rescue an ailing class 40 and then returned to our train.
  19. I think that trip was one of the regular 'Round Robin's' run from Manchester another one which we did in April 1981 was Manchester-Birmingham-Bristol-Paddington-(Euston) - Manchester (IIRC all for a £5)

All this talk of Plymouth and the Tamar Road bridge nudged my memory (it needs regularly nudging) The last couple of weeks I've been scanning 'family' negatives/slides which were put away safely many years ago. (We all know how hard 'safely' is to find don't we ? However this negative surfaced with an appropriate subject (the one on the left)
