  1. The Emergency screw coupling would be a special short screw coupling, as it needed to go hook to hook, rather than shank to hook like the semi permanently fitted version on screw coupled stock.
  2. And this pain in my diodes on my left hand side...
  3. Did it not used to be the case that if a route had a C1 loading gauge, and a train was built to C1 loading gauge, then it could use that route even if the type had not used the route before without all this clearance malarkey? Surely if a train is built to C1/C3 it can go anywhere cleared for C1/C3? (or L1 etc for locos, W1 etc for wagons)
  4. It might not be as dire as that, with all the technical advances in cheap programable computers like raspberry pi etc (other cheap options available no doubt). it should be possible to build an emulator that in conjunction with other suitable off the shelf components. is perfectly capable of replicating whatever the original electronics did.
  5. Yes, although most of the difficulty was due to EE uncharacteristically completely cocking up the rest of the loco rather than the engine itself - cooling system failures leading to engine seizures for example. It was particularly impressive how they managed to produce an overweight loco when the power unit weighed about as much as an empty crisp packet. When they were refurbished they were much better, but even so they were still a loco that combined all the disadvantages of a medium speed diesel engine, with all the disadvantages of a high speed diesel engine and the advantages of neither.
  6. Well at the current rate of attrition, the DPS must have enough engine spares to last about 100 years.
  7. Not only that, but the estimates of ETH loads seem to have gone up dramatically. When Deltics were converted to ETH, it was reckoned that ETH would take up to 300bhp max for an 11 coach mk2d train, and yet now apparently it takes a minimum of over 400bhp for a class 31 to heat 8...
  8. People seem to forget that class 31s are type 2s and don't judge accordingly. Next time you feel the need to moan about their performance why not why not reflect on how many type 2s have more power than a class 31?
  9. You thought at the time that what you did not specify only covered one class - the 91's - which you later revealed to be the case in your later post. If you specify a group that has only one member, then it is still specific even if you don't specify the actual class. Even if you try to argue the group has more than one, it is still almost the opposite of " the most broad-brush, un-specific, simple comment imaginable" Perhaps it is time to stop repeatedly demonstrating how confused and forgetful you are? Or do you feel compelled to demonstrate again?
  10. It is not an apology, just a blanket cut and paste statement that does not even acknowledge they have actually behaved badly, the use of the word "any" instead of "the" shows that they are not even admitting that they have for sure done something that justifies an apology, as "nothing" is still covered by "any" They know exactly what they have done and for the so called apology to be so non specific means that they are not apologising for what they have done at all, but would like you to think they are.
  11. Wonder how many freights were booked to have an ETH loco? I am fairly sure that in the Early 70's there were freightliners booked for Class 50 haulage on the WCML, as the idea was that they could be used singly on overnight freights, and double headed on passenger during the day.
  12. If you are that easily confused perhaps you should avoid commenting on subjects on which you have such little knowledge,
  13. Well even class 55 and class 50 have the same gear ratios as class 37 despite being permitted to run at 100mph, so strictly speaking not specifically passenger geared locos either - even Deltics have a "Goods" setting on the brake changeover switch. So your flood of examples is basically all ETH fitted locos bar class 91's, so perhaps you should have made that your main point rather than just implying it?
  14. It should really not be depressing. He was a remarkable man that achieved so much in his life and brought much joy and happiness. Everyone has to go sometime, and we should rejoice in the fact that he had such a long life on which we can look back on with fondness. I may shed a tear, but it is still with a smile on my face from all the good memories.
  15. Almost all diesels with ETH were not geared specifically for passenger use, the only exceptions really being class 55 and class 50. All others were geared for mixed traffic use, which encompasses the vast majority of ETH fitted locos. As the minimum number of locos were converted to ETH to save money, there would not usually be any spare to work freight, normally it would be a mixed traffic geared no heat loco that would be used on passenger to make up the shortfall.
  16. The only issue I have had is that on my Wrenn 08 the magnet is so strong that it attracts and lifts the tension lock coupling hook at the cab end! Having said that the extra low down torque has improved the slow speed running no end - just what you need for a shunter.
  17. And the definition of a Scottish Gentleman is a man that knows how to play the bagpipes, but doesn't.
  18. Well... The DPS some time ago purchased a pair of complete series one Deltics, of the exact type that were used in the prototype - Class 55 used series 2. If the phasing gearcases of the prototype are not missing anything, then all the parts exist to get the power units into running condition. Still won't be all that cheap or easy since I would expect the generators at least would require refurbishment after all this time.
  19. Indeed. If enough people hold and act, or fail to act based on the wrong opinion then it is a disaster for the whole planet. Ergo, if too many people agree to disagree it is also a disaster for the whole planet.
  20. I can confirm that it is not just apparent but very real, particularly in the sector I work in. It is difficult to resource the projects we have, we have been on a strong recruitment drive for over 6 months which has not yielded much, and I am also frequently contacted by desperate recruitment agencies. One nice side effect is I recently got an unexpected pay rise and I can't help thinking that it is due to retention reasons. I am quite happy with my current position/renumeration so it is not as if I had even subconsciously hinted that I might go elsewhere, but nonetheless...
  21. I think that was the year me and my friends built an igloo that was tall enough for us to stand up in. I will believe global warming is not a thing when the coldest record is broken as frequently as the hottest.
  22. It's pretty much the same story. It was around the turn of the millennium that it was starting to become apparent that the temperature ranges to which they were being designed were no longer adequate. Nowadays we don't design for as cold a temperature as we used to - how long is it since we broke the record for the coldest temperature in the UK? This means that Mk1 and Mk3 OLE can suffer, but OLE using newer design from the "Master Series" should be much better. Hopefully we won't then get issues with tensioning weights falling so far they are resting on the ground, and maintenance crews going around with shovels to dig holes underneath them to restore tension!
  23. Indeed it is. And it can store cold as well as hot. If instead of waiting for the house to heat up over the previous week you had kept it cool, it would have instead taken a long time to heat up instead of a long time to cool down. Yes, if you let it get too hot before you start, then unless you get a good cool night with a light breeze you are pretty much trying to fight the heat with one hand tied behind your back.
  24. LBSC did produce drawings for "Lion" in 5 inch gauge at about the time Titfield Thunderbolt was filmed.
