  1. There are quite a lot of parts of varying degrees of accuracy from the model engineering trade. For traction motors it is more than possible for you to have six powerful axle hung motors in the bogies just like the real thing, so no need to worry about them crashing into anything!
  2. He was awarded the Sub Standard driving achievement.
  3. What I find fascinating is that in theory it is possible to have proper air conditioning powered by steam. An absorption fridge, like those commonly fitted to caravans just needs a heat source to heat the refrigerant to somewhere between 80-90 degrees centigrade. Whilst this is normally achieved in a caravan by a small gas flame or either a 12V or 240V heating element, I see no reason why this could not be achieved using steam. Upscale it, and have fans powered by coach batteries/dynamo and you could have proper air conditioned coaches powered by the steam heating pipes! I wonder if any railway, anywhere in the world, ever did this?
  4. Place I worked at a few years ago had a really strong filter on the internet, to the point it would block sites that were legitimately work related. When the dreaded screen notification came up a colleague if he noticed would joke "you trying to view bigwobblyboobs, com again?" It turned out that much to my surprise that domain name had not been registered. So I registered it, and made up a webpage for it with his work photo plastered all over it. On his leaving do some time later I joked with him and said you should look it up, I dare you, and he did (on his mobile) and there was his face staring back at him. I put a good luck with your new job message on it too! He thought it was hilarious! I have subsequently let the registration lapse, so have no idea if it is in use now...
  5. You can write Chicken Shit if you know how...
  6. A hedge fund delegation?
  7. Is it shaped like a thingy?
  8. What is more thought provoking is that apparently that is a thing that made you :), unless you posted in the wrong thread?
  9. I have also been wondering about that, having a Mainline version in B/G. Normally it would be for stock expected to be used on express passenger, was there a shortage of Mk1 BGs for this purpose? Did any get used with the Blue/Grey Porthole stock?
  10. They did change the gearing on them by adding an extra gear reduction stage on the later ones. this made them a bit slower with slightly better slow speed performance, but also even noisier...
  11. I can see why it is pointless changing the speed limit in this case. the corner is sufficiently sharp that 20mph could be too fast to negotiate it without losing control, so reducing the limit from 60mph to 50 mph won't make a tremendous amount of difference. In fact a tractor would most likely lose control if it did not slow down enough, which is what I suspect happened here - they are not exactly known for their sports car handling!
  12. It is an electrification requirement. Where there is a standing surface within a certain distance of live OLE (I can't remember it off the top of my head) It must be separated with a mesh with holes not exceeding 50mm x 50mm. Many signals in electrified areas are fitted with this mesh to enable signaling engineers to work on them whilst the OLE is live.
  13. The last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October.
  14. Every year there are two days that not 24 hours without being even remotely pedantic, they being 23 and 25 hours respectively. On each occasion I like to post "It's a short/long* day today" and see if anyone bites with the "its 24 hours like every other" response... *delete as applicable
  15. Whilst that is true for the wire, not so much for the copper clad cantilevers and registration tubes.
  16. Looks like we are going to have to look further after all...
  17. You could well be right, no doubt they would have been stored some time prior to installation, and quite possibly outside.
  18. No buffers = fixed, Buffers = Drop head. Visually difficult to tell from a modeling distance as the business end is the same.
  19. So now, in order to avoid offence, if we are to mention a perfectly possible and not unusual situation, that does not in any way exclude others - it explicitly says "may" - we have to explicitly mention all other possible sexual permutations and combinations of beauty in order to not offend someone?
  20. Interesting that the coach on the left retains all of its footsteps. Also I think that the gangways on EMU's were a bit different, so I would not be sure that the colour of their gangway doors would necessarily be a good guide for hauled stock.
  21. Mk1 cantilevers and registrations were copper clad steel to resist corrosion instead of galvanised. Must have looked very shiny when first installed!
  22. Not being consciously aware is exactly how it should be. The more that you can do without having to think about it, means that there is more brain power available for anticipating others manouevers, reacting sooner and avoiding accidents. Autos can be quite good, but one thing they can't do, is anticipate when you are just about to overtake and be in the right gear before you need it. You can of course manually intervene, but that takes away some of the point of it being automatic in the first place. Modern Autos are even worse in this respect, as with fly by wire if you floor it it is merely a request to the computer, which will carefully modulate the throttle and time the gear change to what it thinks is appropriate for various reasons (smooth gear change, emissions etc) that you don't care too much about when you just want to go, and inevitably introduces delay between you requesting full throttle and actually getting it. At least in the pre-electronic age you knew if you put your foot down you were getting full throttle right away as the pedal was directly connected to the throttle butterfly, and the gearbox kickdown cable attached to the throttle ensured that the gearbox changed down as fast as it could.
