  1. I always assumed Kill in dutch meant creek or river
  2. Regarding weathering Kadee's, fine brush, Humbrol 62 and a paper towel. Remove most of the paint from the brush and just wipe over the various coupler faces and any exposed coupler shank. Another tip, don't bother with Kadee graphite just use a soft pencil drawn over the inside of the box or if already installed scrape a bit of lead into the box with a craftknife. I've done hundreds on my US stock, a little excess paint stiffening the knuckle hinge is usually eased by wiggling the thing a bit.
  3. I've been having a bit of a think about "the end of the line", view block buildings , road bridge etc. Then I spotted the picture below, taken from this site https://www.flickr.com/groups/1408456@N24/pool/page1 pretty clear where Mr Mindheim gets some of his ideas from. Perhaps simple real is best.
  4. The whole conversation so far goes a long way towards the reason why I model US HO, near correct scale to gauge, near scale prototype couplings(Kadee 58's for me) and the potential to go Proto 87 without ditching 60+plus locos and much stock. Perhaps we are looking at this from the wrong end, however I doubt there is any mainstream company who is going put their cash into P4 rtr. Crowd funding with a niche supplier may just get you somewhere, I beleive the Sutton class24 has a P4 option.
  5. Having spent time on the phone at Abellio HQ I have established that the letter is real but has been sent to the wrong person. Same intial and surname, the wheels are in motion to remove my sons name from their records. Thank fully it would appear to affect less than 10 people so is easy to track back, HR person knew as soon as I confirmed my sons christian name that they have a crossed wire.
  6. Firstly apologies if this is in the wrong forum , but it's not directly related to trains. My son has received a letter from Abellio regarding just over £2k in over payed wages for period in September of this year, oddly he has never worked for them and does not work for the current TOC either. He applied for a temp job(bus replacement, man in yellow vest on station approach) in the summer of 2016 but never took up the offer, so clearly there is a c*** *p. The letter has an incorrect email for the head of HR but other details, persons name, an address in London SE5 which tallies with the Abellio London bus headquarters are correct. It also states a TUPE date of the 11th Sept as the tranfer to Arriva. So any Northern empployees had similar letters.
  7. Bordeaux seem to operate a modern tram system through the historic city using a centre third rail. I'm not sure of the engineering but it is somehow only energised in tram length sections as the vehicles move along. Yes I know it's low speed low voltage but it would be interesting to know the maximum capabilty of such a system, particularly if it answers some of the saftey issues.
  8. Here is a link to my Mantle Lane photos you'll notice there is almost nothing lying about, the former station goods yard was partially relaid, just before I started work there in '78 just out of shot in the class 56 view is a small crinkley tin lamp hut. The cl56 hides the emptygoods shed, although the office at the far end just behind the distant cl20's was the general stores room. https://www.flickr.com/photos/28630680@N06/albums/72157614306282272. Another album containing shots of the interior of the open ended fuel point at Burton on Trent, just next to the fuel pump is a barrel and electric pump on a trolley. Class 56 locos needed antifreeze additive and this how it was dispensed. Also check the Leicester shots for more traditional depot. https://www.flickr.com/photos/28630680@N06/3306748141/in/album-72157614390281420/
  9. I seem to recall the detail kit was part of the Mainly Trains range along with a similar kit for the Hornby/Airfix 14xx. Buried amongst my book collection I've got a photo copy of a "how to" article for the 14xx, done by Ian Rice I think.
  10. Is this the detailing kit for the Hornby/Airfix auto coach http://www.dartcastings.co.uk/dart/DK1.php
  11. The max speed of an 08 depends on how close to opening or closing time it is.
  12. When ever my wife and I went to the Royal Exchange in Manchester to see a production, we would play the "who's appeared in The Bill" game. The programme notes always revealed at least one actor with an appearence in the show, Casualty being the other.
  13. From drivers perspective, I personally tended to drive by the tacho when the route was straigh forward. Basically the revs would peak at around 15mph, to get a smooth change the revs would then need to drop back to idle before moving the handle to 2nd but you now give just a slight increase in revs pause then open up and so through the gearboox. It's that pause as the revs drop then the 2 stage increase which dcc sound hasn't quite got yet. On a purely anecdotal note, I did my dmu training at Manchester Victoria in 1987, "these will be gone by the end of next year" said the instructor, I learn't a lot about roses that week and 10 years on finally saw the end of 101's.
  14. After years of US HO I've dabbled in a bit of British OO, I recently rejoined my local club so thats the excuse. A green Hornby 08 was a nice project, it carries different number either side. I found pictures of 065/066 showing both sides of both locos so liking the weathering of each I chose the best sides to represent, particularly as 066 had rements of a previous emblem on the battery box. Both were resdidents of Hull circa 1974 photo taken on Dewsbury Midland, Manchester Model Railway Society. Next is 25321 same layout
  15. Longsight have a Jocko with a similar drawbar, thats used in conjunction with some custom built steel brackets for moving Pendo bogies. I'm pretty sure I've seen the Soho engine doing similar moves with 323 bogies. LM 323's occasionally show up at Longsight now and again.
  16. Thats exactly the wording "tunnel motor type radiators", so sort of grown up GP15. Time for some photo shop by someone.
  17. Just a few lines in the "Locomotive" column of the current Trains mag about this very nearly loco for the Rio Grande, it was designed but never built.
  18. I've just Googled "rivet counter press" images, this was the result https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=rivet+counter+press&client=tablet-android-samsung&prmd=sivn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjf0PO5qa7WAhVoCMAKHQo7CSMQ_AUIEigC&biw=962&bih=601 I've got a loft full of this stuff!
  19. I've used the airline several times over the last few years for flights to France and never had an issue, I just couldn't understand why annual leave was causing an issue compared with previous years. I guess it's a case of fewer staff same timetable. Perhaps they could go for the Southern Trains option and introduce POO flights!
  20. Seems to me the airline have made a massive PR gaffe, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-41291483 They have a one make fleet, 189 seats, 42 days and lets assume 45 cancellations per day being the average. Thats 357,210 seats yet they send me a lovely email offering cheap deals on 50,000 seats. I was seriously thinking of a week in the south of France in a couple of weeks, now going by rail all the way. I wonder why this years annual leave for staff has been mismanaged, they quote rolling out a new computer system.
  21. Wigan Wallgate, simple island and a single track bay with platform face either side. Throw in bridges at both ends (West Coast mainline northend) even a small amount of freight. Dusty bin train to Arpley Bridge so scope for classes 45,47 and 60. A newsprint warehouse on the Kirby line opened during the EWS era but I never wittnessed any thing except 66's , stock was bogie Cargo vans. A loop existed on the Manchester bound side upto the late 90's resignalling.A 3rd carriage siding exists north of the WC over bridge with a 60's era signal box in the vee of the Kirby Southport junction. Even a Newspaper train during the night, in my time it was always one the ex BedPan Rolls Royce 2car conversions . Icing on the cake is the loco hauled club train morning and evening cl 31 with 6 mk1 of mixed origins blue/gray ex NSE and reggy rail in the end of conventional DMU era then eth 37's with between 4 and 6 mk2 reggy rail coaches.
  22. Cheers for the above link, it does help.
  23. Can anyone help with numbers for 2 car sets from the early 70's, I've individual vehicle numbers for the NH allocation but not coupled pairs.
  24. I like catalogues, so thats fine for me. I'll keep a watch on the small supplier forum.
  25. Yes, but in the Gents or Ladies?
