  1. Indeed. A most unlikely pair of visitors to Aberdeen. They also worked local trip-freights (pipes and timber) to Elgin and Laurencekirk. Bill
  2. Great shots How do they do a crew change in the middle of nowhere (relatively speaking) when the train is hours late? Thanks, Bill
  3. In picture 3 of post 155 from Beast, what is the shunter handing to the driver (or vice versa)? Maybe I've missed reference to it, but is there a track-plan of the sidings available? Thanks, Bill
  4. J1414 and J1420: glorious 'train in the English countryside' photos... How common was it for a 47 to be paired with a brake tender? Bill
  5. Great photos. Did you have to book a seat in the RTO or RFO or was it first come first served? Did they check your ticket to make sure that you were in the correct class? Thanks, Bill
  6. C7917 are there two position lights one above the other (above the left hand grey relay cabinet) or is it an optical illusion? C7921 great view of Millerhill, was there any more inaccessible shed?? Thanks Bill
  7. How did a 42 and a 43 differ from a driver's perspective? Thanks, Bill
  8. J0978. Green Warship + green Bulleid stock = perfect match Is that a maroon Gresley coach farther back in the train??
  9. J4447: I wonder how many times each day the gates were closed (to the road) to allow shunting? The lack of gates in J4448 surely violates safety rules? Bill
  10. I went to a meeting at RTC in about 1985 (not really railway related but 'industrial powder diffraction') and lunch was served on LMS branded crockery with magnificent LMS sterling silver cutlery. I wonder what happened to it?? Bill
  11. J7060: the barrier looks like it was home-made with bits from B&Q?? Bill
  12. Brockenhurst (SR) yard had similar hybrid concrete/steel tie-bar sleepers, presumably installed in WWII. Bill
  13. What type of vans were used (and what barriers?) and what did an explosives label look like? Thanks, Bill
  14. Sorry, just catching up with this excellent thread: in picture 3 of post 3, it seems very late to see a GW (verandah) style brake van? And what sort of comments would you get at a show if you had a Shark ballast brake coupled to a Cargowagon ;-) Bill
  15. Did I read somewhere that the original colour of these vans was passenger crimson (rather than brown/bauxite)? Did they have a steam pipe? One survived at Eastleigh as an internal user for many years. Bill
  16. For the record, this van was built at Wolverton in 1957 under Lot 2841. How common were screw couplings on vans? Bill
  17. In the third link, B748809 was built at Swindon in 1951, presumably for Guinness traffic. What are the 'extra' end shackles each side of the screw coupling for? Thanks, Bill
  18. Fascinating. Are there any pictures of this working out there? Bill
  19. Brockenhurst to Stirling used rail-blue Carflats and featured, I think, the only regular appearance of sleeping cars on the Southern Region. Bill
  20. Nice pictures, although I would not call 68s handsome... Do they have a nickname? In hawkingetippyd's post of 68012 at Mountsorrel, what is that thing that looks like a milk float in the background? Thanks, Bill
  21. More daily treats, more questions from me... Post 5549, photo C 654: why does the near platform have a fixed distant under the starter, whereas the adjacent platform has a working distant (obviously 'off')? The first vehicle looks like a rare Mk1 corridor brake first. Bill
  22. Thanks Dave. Interesting to see the point rodding coming out of the back of the 'box rather than the front. Where was the down platform located? Bill
  23. Post 5416: C1205; lovely view. Was Dent 'box switched out as its signals always seem to be 'off' in photos? C747: looks like a ventilated meat van after the Boplate. Bill
  24. Post 5367, photo J5340. You can see the parched grass and almost feel the heat of that unforgettable summer. The children pictured may well be grandparents by now... Same post, J6539. Why has the destinations of the "Trains to..." beside the footbridge been blanked out? Bill
