  1. Fascinating stuff... Maybe this explains their telegraphic code of Special Parcels Van (i.e.: not for general use and to be returned empty to Aylesbury). Bill
  2. Every day, more gems for our viewing delight... J1404: unusual location for number and double-arrow symbol on a class 20? J1376: great shot of 1960s cars, buses and fashions... Not to mention the concrete signal post. Bill
  3. Hi all, I've posted this link before, but given this splendid news from Hornby, it seems appropriate to do so again... http://www.brdatabase.info/timelines.php?page=news (click on 1959 and read on...) Thanks, Bill
  4. J4007: superb study of a Deltic, if only photos had sound effects... J3138: that looks like very low grade iron ore... Was there any washing before it was transported to a steelworks? Bill
  5. Great shots, Dave, thanks for braving the rain ;-) How are the wagons unloaded so quickly? It looks like they have been renumbered from UIC (international) to UK series? Bill
  6. C405/C590/C591 show LT (Longsight?) set-numbers for the DMUs. Does anybody know any more about these? And yes, nice House Coal Concentration brandings. Thanks, Bill
  7. Dave -- congratulations on 500,000 views, is that an RMWeb record?? J0888: how are trains signaled from the down fast to the down slow? There doesn't seem to be a signal in sight. J1061: the open between the Flatrol and the brake van looks like one of the ex-SR 8-plank coal wagons a long way from home. Were they vacuum braked (as implied by bauxite livery)? Thanks, Bill
  8. Hi all, Here (if the link works) are what look to be Bird's Eye containers along with fish vans at King's Cross, presumably heading for the widened lines. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153510138327034&set=o.232434836847743&type=3&theater Bill
  9. C2293: had the locals in their "Sunday best" come to the station to see the Jolly Fisherman pass through or something else?? Bill
  10. C2546 with the Palvan is interesting. Is PLA Port of London Authority? Was the van built for PLA or retired from BR (and the vacuum brake removed...)? The photos of blue/grey 4-Ceps doing their everyday duties in Kent seem like yesterday, but are actually from 40 years' ago Thanks again Dave for all the work in scanning and posting these precious views, Bill
  11. C8482: is that a gas heater on a trap point? I love the glorious chaos of J4444. Bill
  12. So what happened to the stone in the wagons that were returned to Toton on the abortive 9 September delivery pictured above? Was it temporarily offloaded or delivered somewhere else? Thanks, Bill
  13. Thanks for posting this Mick. What is the significance of the "unworked points" just below Royal Oak North box on the diagram? It's interesting that there's no advanced starter beyond the junction in the Filey direction. I presume that (steam) locomotives turning would reverse out of the Holiday Camp station around the south curve to the up main and then run forward wrong road through catch point 5 and then reverse back to the Camp on the down north curve? Sorry, so many questions... Thanks again, Bill
  14. Great shots, Dave, thanks for posting. What does the stencil below the position light display for a train heading to Peterborough? Thanks, Bill
  15. Hi Dave, All your (and your dad's) photos are wonderful, but those taken in the late 1960s and featuring AC electrics are just beyond compare. J1818 (already commented upon above) includes a Fruit D a part of the partially fitted freight. Presumably with the rather dodgy riding quality of those sand hoppers, it was quite severely limited in speed? I reckon that J0832 (the AM4/AM10 combination) must be near unique. Thanks again, Bill
  16. J1217: the nearer Sturgeon has had its door bangers removed, which I've not seen before. Is the (small) crowd admiring the class 37 or something else?? Bill
  17. (Sorry, pressed post too soon...) How do the "or" levers (as in 8 or 13) work? Thanks again, Bill
  18. How does disc 61 relate to 55 and 54? Were there sidings (accessed from point 63) below the 'box? Many thanks, Bill
  19. C1039 is interesting wagon-wise as well, with a bunch of unbranded iron-ore tipplers looking remarkably rust-free. Bill
  20. Like leopard says... Also, EPBs were suburban units with no toilets and all second class. HAPs were nominal "main line" units with a toilet (not accessible from all carriages) and a first-class section. Very different beasts... Bill
  21. Every day, new delights... J474: nice example of an NE prefix to a DMU coach number (and yes, a 13-t hopper in the background). J648: lovely sight of a 40 hauling a Siphon G (if you saw it a model-railway exhibition, "experts" would say it was wrong...) Bill
  22. Nice shots, Russ, was there a good crowd? I wonder if we spotted 47813 in its former guise as D1720 at New Milton over 40 years ago Bill
  23. Is that anhydrite hopper at the front of the train and two of our favourite 13-ton hoppers at the rear in J633? What is the yellow thing to the left in C1382? Many thanks, Bill
  24. What are the two "things" in the four-foot parallel to the ends of the scrap rails beside the track? Many thanks, Bill
